Papadakis/Cizeron #10 - Waacking All The Way To Beijing

Finally had the chance to watch the final group (I'll catch up with the rest tonight) - wow, they were all so good but Gabriella and Guillaume were beyond everything. And it was wonderful to see the crowd so there for them.

I have to admit I did not expect the opera singer they brought in to do the national anthem though! She has a lovely voice and hearing the whole crowd sing along was pretty special. 😍

That might be the funniest one yet. They are really funny but clearly they look liberated. Very happy for them, I want them as commentators.

For those who would like to see the french Team tour exhibition, il will be shown on the https://www.telegrenoble.net/direct.html tonight at 8 PM french time (it is 11 am juste now). or on tv (depend on your tv access : freebox = 903, bbox = 316, sfr = 477, orange = 348, tnt 38 numericable = 477)

Some statistical analysis over the last 17 years about ice dance

You can notice it to my avatar, I am a big fan of PC. But here, I'm not going to drown you under dithyrambic tirades to the glory of my favorites (The words still seem reductive compared to my feelings, and the quality of my English is only improving very slowly with the Google friend). I'm just going to present some quantitative elements more objective than subjective (certainly perfectible, everything can not be compared to everything), which illuminate even more the star PC.

This post is an update of a post made three or four years ago... on another forum.

Competitions
Who won the most ISU competitions, which has the highest victory rate compared to the number of participation?
My postulates:
  • I went back to 1995, date of introduction of the GP ISU
  • I only considered the following Senior competitions: GP, GPF, 4CC, Euro, World, OG

Here are the 28 couples who won at least one competition, ranked by decreasing victory rate.
PC have the highest number of wins (23, since yhis year), and the highest rate.

Highest score ? World record ? Welcome % of the perfect score !

The ISU publishes, in the statitistics section, the Progression of Highest Score. The total score potentially being able to evolve from one season to the next, it is a question of Highest score and not of World Record.

Here are the theoretical maximum scores since the 2010-2011 season:
  • 2010-2011 : SD 81.00 + FD 118.00 = Total 199.00
  • 2011-2012 : SD 81.00 + FD 118.00 = Total 199.00
  • 2012-2013 : SD 81.00 + FD 119.50 = Total 200.50
  • 2013-2014 : SD 81.00 + FD 119.50 = Total 200.50
  • 2014-2015 : SD 82.20 + FD 120.90 = Total 203.10
  • 2015-2016 : SD 80.20 + FD 120.90 = Total 201.10
  • 2016-2017 : SD 85.30 + FD 124.10 = Total 209.40
  • 2017-2018 : SD 85.30 + FD 124.70 = Total 210.00
  • 2018-2019 : RD 91.52 + FD 137.84 = Total 229.36
  • 2019-2020 : RD 96.02 + FD 141.58 = Total 237.60
  • 2020-2021 : RD 96.02 + FD 141.58 = Total 237.60
  • 2021-2022 : RD 96.14 + FD 141.58 = Total 237.72
Translating, year after year, the score obtained in "% of the perfect theoretical score" makes it possible to erase the changes of notation of each season, and to attempt comparisons and evolutions over several years.

Thus, a couple who skate 90% of perfection will have scored 179.10 in 2011/2012 ... and 213.95 this season.

Since the 2010/2011 season, 11 couples share 83 performances with a score of more than 90% of the perfect score :
  • PC 24
  • VM 18
  • DW 10
  • SS 7
  • HD & SK 6
  • WP & CB 4
  • CL 2
  • SB & GP 1
3 couples share 18 performances with a score of more than 95% of the perfect score:
  • PC 12
  • VM 4
  • DW 2
PC have achieved 8 of the top 10 scores.
The best score 2021/2022 (PC World) is in 8th position; So there has not been a "World Record" this season.

There are numbers and statistics on one side, and there is magic, art and emotions on the other.. But what this combo is beautiful !
And finally, an injunction? a prayer ? for Gabriella and Guillaume: the show must go on !

There are numbers and statistics on one side, and there is magic, art and emotions on the other.. But what this combo is beautiful !
And finally, an injunction? a prayer ? for Gabriella and Guillaume: the show must go on !
One correction: Virtue and Moir’s first senior season was 2006-2007 (same as Charlie and Meryl). You have them starting at 2005

You put me in doubt about my research; this is normal, manual counting can be a source of error.
After verification, and according to Wikipedia:
  • VM started their senior career in the 2005/2006 season at 4CC (third place), 41 competitions in total.
  • DW started their senior career well in the 2006/2007 season, 37 competitions in total.

I don't understand some of your dates. Why have Cappellini/Lanotte as starting in 2006 but D/W starting in 2007 (same as Bobrova/Solv who actually started in 2007)?

Or your logic for putting V/M at 2005 but W/P at 2007?

I see. You used the year they first competed in a senior competition as opposed to their first full senior season?

Like the other posted, I think the years just threw me. DW and VM both competed in their first senior competitions in 2006. VM at 4CC in Feb of 2006 and DW at Skate America in 2006.

Anyway, we’ll done on the research! Inspires me to rewatch all of PC’s programs :)

Hosting a dinner party today where we'll see P/C's performances on a projection screen. In preparation I went back to Roger Angel's short comment in The New Yorker on their 2018 FD. Still remember the validation I felt when I first read it. (Angel is one of my favorites from that golden era of the magazine and I trust his aesthetic judement as much as anyone else's, even though he is not a dance specialist.)

The French pair Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, who won a silver in ice dancing: a silver in spite of a sustained long-performance turn that was simultaneously restrained and athletic, sensual and balletic, open and deeply private, and most moving of all, it seemed, to the two dancers themselves. Papadakis has a sad and striking face, with a rugged nose and a long, beautifully proportioned body incapable of anything hurried or out of touch with her partner or the music. This writer was a regular attendee at City Ballet over a couple of decades, and this dance interlude felt as moving and memorable as any Balanchine-produced moments seen in that long, sweet time.

As we know, the French pair were making up for a loss of points suffered during some momentary awkwardness in the short program, when Papadakis tore a strap on her costume; the pair could not quite catch up in the finale. The Canadian twosome who won the gold were brilliant and flawless, but not on the same continent with these French artists.
