A week after declaring that Russian teams cannot play international soccer for an indefinite period because of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, soccer’s governing body announced on Monday that foreign players and coaches contracted by Russian teams can suspend their contracts and move elsewhere — at least temporarily.

The decision will affect about 100 top players currently signed to Russian clubs, who will be able to set aside their contracts starting Thursday and sign with new teams through the end of the European season. On June 30, however, their original contracts would come back into force, and those with years left would have to return to their Russian teams or negotiate their departures.

Lausanne, 8 March 2022 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) registered earlier today the appeals filed by the Football Union of Russia (FUR) against the decisions taken on 28 February 2022 by the Bureau of the FIFA Council (the FIFA appeal) and the UEFA Executive Committee (the UEFA appeal) (collectively, the Challenged Decisions) to suspend all Russian teams and clubs from participation in their respective competitions until further notice.

The FIFA appeal has been filed against Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the Polish Football Association, the Swedish Football Association, the Czech Football Association, the Football Association of Montenegro and the Malta Football Association.

The UEFA appeal has been filed against UEFA, the Hellenic Football Federation, the Belarus Football Federation, the Danish Football Association, the Luxembourgish Football Association, the Austrian Football Association, the Malta Football Association, the Portuguese Football Federation, the English Football Association, the Spanish Football Association, the Irish Football Association and the French Football Association.

In its appeals, the FUR requests CAS to set aside the Challenged Decisions and to reinstate all Russian teams and clubs for participation in FIFA and UEFA competitions. Together with each statement of appeal, the FUR has also filed a request to stay the execution of each challenged decision.

The CAS Court Office has initiated two separate arbitration procedures and, in accordance with the Code of Sports-related Arbitration (the arbitration rules governing CAS procedures), will seek the position of the respondent parties with respect to the FUR’s requests to stay the execution of the Challenged Decisions and as to the organization and planning of each arbitration procedure.

The CAS anticipates being able to share further information on the proceedings through a media release in a few days’ time, once a decision has been issued with respect to the requests for a stay.

I’m wondering how long it will take for Russia to start using its famous athletes as propaganda tools for the war. Thinking of Medvedev and Rublev in tennis, for example. Or if they’ll let them continue to compete as if nothing is happening to co-opt their successes and take a portion of their earnings.

If this war continues for more months, conscription might be needed and what that will mean for public opinion.

Medvedev’s family moved to France when he was young and he claims Monte Carlo as a residence, so they have less hold on him than say Ovechkin, who still has immediate family in Russia. Rublev still claims Moscow residence but he could buy property somewhere and not go back, which is what Lendl did in the 1980s

the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) against the decision taken on 2 March 2022 by the Executive
Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) not to allow Russian and Belarus athletes and
officials to participate in the 2022 Winter European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) to be held in
Vuokatti, Finland, on 20-25 March 2022 (the Challenged Decision).

The ROC requests CAS to set aside the Challenged Decision and order that athletes and officials affiliated
to the ROC be entitled to take part in all competitions organised by the EOC, including the 2022 Winter
European Youth Olympic Festival and the 2022 Summer European Youth Olympic Festival, under the
same conditions as athletes and officials affiliated to other national olympic committees.

The CAS Court Office has initiated an arbitration procedure. The parties are currently exchanging written
submissions and the panel of arbitrators is being constituted. A request for provisional measures has not
been filed. A procedural calendar will be established within the next days. Further information, once
available, will be provided through another media release.

A meeting of FISU’s Steering Committee today condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine – as facilitated by Belarus – and its impact on the Ukrainian people, including the Ukrainian university sports community.

The FISU Steering Committee deplored the continued suffering in Ukraine, especially among civilians, and added its voice to the international calls for an end to hostilities.

The FISU Steering Committee confirmed that Russian and Belarusian athletes, together with national university sports federation officials, will not participate in FISU competitions and activities until at least the end of 2022.

Two FISU University World Cups in Russia and a FISU World University Championships in Belarus, scheduled for 2022, had previously been cancelled.

The FISU Steering Committee further confirmed that the FISU University World Cup Combat Sports and associated meetings, also scheduled for 2022, will no longer be held in Russia. Any alternative arrangements will be communicated in due course.

While committing to continuing FISU’s constant review of the situation in Ukraine, the FISU Steering Community also established a significant and dedicated fund to provide financial support to the Ukrainian university sports community.

In the first instance, the fund will be used for humanitarian support and to assist Ukrainian participation in this year’s FISU competitions and activities where possible.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has denied an appeal from Russia to temporarily lift a suspension against their national teams and clubs from UEFA competitions.

The Football Union of Russia had hoped to lift the suspension to allow their teams to compete, prior to a final decision by CAS against UEFA and FIFA’s ban.

Had CAS allowed the request, Russian sides would have reinstated.

This would have allowed Russia's men’s national side to participate in a qualification playoff for the World Cup later this year.

Russian teams have been banned in response to the country's invasion of Ukraine.

"The Challenged Decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in UEFA competitions," a CAS statement read.

"The CAS arbitration proceedings continue.

"The parties did not agree to an expedited procedure and a hearing has not yet been fixed."

Lachlan Morton from EF Cycling is riding from Munich to the Ukraine border in an attempt to raise money for Global Givings Ukraine Relief Fund.

Lachlan Morton was in Spain, racing the Gran Camiño, when he heard the news that Russia had invaded Ukraine. He was sitting with his teammate Mark Padun at the breakfast table. Mark is from Ukraine. His friends and family were now living in a war zone.

“That made it hit closer to home, having a teammate who is directly impacted by it,” Lachlan says. “I found it hard to focus on trying to get ready for a race when something so significant was happening in the world. I’m a pretty optimistic person generally, but in the past couple of weeks, I’ve just felt that there has been very little to be excited about.

“I kept thinking, wow, I could actually do that in one ride,” he says. “So that was my idea. I’m not an overly political person. I’m not an expert in any of this. I’m just trying to do the one thing I know how to do and engage the bike-riding community to help. My idea is to highlight the fact that war is not a far-off problem. Conflicts are a bike ride away, all over the world. That’s the intention behind it, and to try and raise as much money as we can to help out people who have been displaced.”

They haven't selected a relief organization yet and said it may be multiple organizations.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced that France and Austria will replace Russia and Belarus at the men's ice hockey world championship in May.

Earlier, during an extraordinary meeting on February 28, the IIHF took the decision to suspended Russian and Belarusian teams in response to the invasion of Ukraine and now after a council meeting on Friday, the two new teams have been announced. Ice hockey is one of the sports Russian tops in, and including victories as the Soviet Union, Russia is currently tied with Canada for most world titles on 27.

The Ice Hockey World Cup is scheduled to take place in Finland from May 15-29. France will join group A in Helsinki and face defending champions Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, Kazakhstan and Italy while Austria will replace Belarus in group B in Tampere and will play Olympic champions Finland, the United States, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Latvia, Norway and Great Britain.

With IIHF's decision, there is a suspension of all Russian and Belarusian National Teams and Clubs from participation in every age category and in all IIHF competitions or events until further notice, it also announced the withdrawal of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship hosting rights from Russia. The 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship was scheduled to take place from 26 December 2022 to 5 January 2023 and the organisers have now initiated discussions to find a new host for the event.
