That would be because it is mandatory for everyone to compete at Challenge to earn a place at nationals this year. No byes, no exceptions.
That is not what Carol Lane told PJ Kwong in their "Zamboni break" chat this morning with Piper and Paul - she said Junior and Senior medalists from last year had byes but that most, if not all, of them were choosing to compete because they want the feedback/experience.

From Skate Canada. All Events at 2021 Skate Canada Challenge are compulsory and only athletes with written permission of Skate Canada shall be permitted entry to 2021 Canadian Figure Skating Championships without having competed at the 2021 Skate Canada Challenge.

so I assume if one of last year‘s medalists was injured or ill ( or some in an event that doesn’t have the maximum entries) they could have applied for a bye.

Medalists were automatically given byes if they wanted them.

Various Challenge-related news:

- Piper & Paul (and presumably the other Ontario dancers) did their RD today.

- An article en francais about Marjorie & Zach, who are confirmed to be competing at Challenger (and didn't do Sectionals).

- Nikolaj posted a Story about competing their RD today.

I see they finally got Shane out of the jacket and into something a little more Tom Jones-like. :D

Here is an article in French on Lajoie and Lagha, mostly discussing the challenges (no pun intended) of competing by video at Skate Canada Challenge. They seem to maintain a positive attitude about it, saying that have too many other things to focus on in their skate to worry about the lack of audience. The article also confirms that they have a bye to Canadians as last year’s silver medallists, which I believe was discussed in one of the Canadian threads.

The last bit of the article goes into the experiences the coaches at IAM have had with coaching many of their international teams virtually.

PJ Kwong and Carol Lane's group are co-hosting a virtual holiday party at 4 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 13 to raise money for food banks. More info here.
Re-posting what @Wyliefan shared today in the TV Alerts thread to this one:
PJ Kwong has now uploaded the Ice Dance Elite Holiday Party link to YouTube. It starts with snippets of the teams in practice, so you can get just a glimpse of how training is going!

While the COVID-19 pandemic has made this skating season much more complicated, Team IDC wanted to continue its tradition of highlighting new teams. Jamie Fournier and Anthony Haddad are a new team that will represent Canada.
Tell us about how your partnership started (tryout, etc.)?
JF: My head coach found out about Anthony and set up the tryout in Montreal. It was a two-day tryout, but it clicked right away.
AH: Our tryout was March 12/13. There was an immediate connection as everything went seamlessly, so we contacted each other on March 14 to officially start our partnership. Then, as we all know, the whole world shut down.

Who are your coaches? Tell us about your training location.
Our Head Coach is Julien Lalonde, our Choreographer is Mylène Girard and rounding out our coaching team is Dominic Barthe. We train in the afternoon at Isatis Sport Chambly in Quebec.
Anthony Haddad placed 7th in Novice at 2019 U.S. Nationals with Kelsey Schaub and they were among the 15 invited Novice teams that competed at the North American Cup in Lake Placid in late July/early August of 2019, placing 11th.

Found this French article about Fournier/Haddad that was published back in June 2020:
Translated excerpt:
The uncertainty of the coming season allows the duo to develop their partnership.
“I'm not really thinking about the standings at the moment. It takes a lot of pressure off us, ”he says.
The skaters coach, Julien Lalonde, agrees.
“They will have time to prepare. There will be no competitions this summer. We want them to be able to take part in the first qualifying competition for the provincials scheduled for November, ”he said.
Only 2 teams competed virtually in the Junior Dance event at Championnats A de la Section Québec. If Fournier/Haddad entered Challenge, the start orders are supposed be posted by Skate Canada the week of January 4, 2021. The Junior/Senior Dance events are scheduled to be streamed on January 16-17, 2021.

Does Team IDC have any info on new junior team Marine Poulior and Cameron Colucci ? They seem to have gone quiet.
