Watched the season finale of Perry Mason on HBO Max last night and really liked it. This is another show I hope gets a second season.

Perry Mason’s stint as a limited series was short-lived: HBO is bringing back the Matthew Rhys-led reboot for a second season.

I don't think that's going to happen. A German cinema owner from the town nearby stated that the movie companies are postponing all the blockbusters (or alternatively sell or market new movies directly to streaming instead) because they won't make enough money with the cinema airings as long as the audience capacities are limited. He exlicitly used "Mulan" as an example, because they were supposed to get that in the cinemas now...

The cinemas here are very disappoined about that lack of support in times of a crisis.

Tenet and New Mutants are supposed to be released in late August. We will see if that happens.

Umbrella Academy Season 2 on Netflix released today.

I just watched both seasons - I had started S1 a few month back and couldn't get into it. Such a stylish and interesting show, but S1 had terrible pacing. Every episode felt 2 hours long! S2 stared really strong, but one particular character shift mid-season bugged. I liked the ending and am ready for S3!

Klaus is my favorite. Five is kind of an asshole (and the actor is great at it) but I guess that happens when you spend decades alone in the post apocalypse world.

We finished Dark on Netflix.

Overall, I think I’d give this show a B-. The time travel concept was interesting, and the plot was quite compelling at some points. The characters were a mixed bag. There were a lot of them, almost too many to keep track of, and many of them were quite interesting (if not often likable). But others were just enigmatic or hard to get a handle on.

The pacing of the show I found to be inconsistent. Season 1 was quite slow at times, and I was almost falling asleep during a few episodes. Season 2 was much better paced and compulsively interesting. Season 3 reminded me of the last few seasons of Lost. It felt like the writers were losing control of the story arc, as they kept putting in more and more twists and turns. As with Lost, the more complex the whole construct became, the less I found myself caring. The whole thing started to feel too contrived and repetitive.

The good parts were really good, and probably made the whole series worth watching. But it sort of limped to an end IMO. My husband pretty much felt the same way. (Overall, I liked the series probably better than he did.) I've seen some comments from other people, though, that they really loved the ending.

I have been watching a Korean drama called 'Crash Landing on You'.

It's about a wealthy South Korean heiress who goes paragliding and gets caught up in sudden winds and then swept in North Korea. She is then found and hidden by an impossibly dashing and morally upstanding North Korean army officer.

It's fantastic. Plot twists at whiplash frequency, the Mr Darcy of North Korea, fascinating portrayal of daily life in North Korea and really funny too. Anyone who loves a good fluffy rom-com will enjoy this immensely.

I've just finished watching this, at your suggestion.

Fun, though often oddly paced* and frequent shifts between comedy, action, sentimental romance, etc.

Episodes are an hour and a half, give or take, so I usually watched one per night, two when I had time.

The episode structure seemed to be
Scene (which often repeated last scene of the previous episode, often from another perspective or continuing on from where it had left off)
Credits sequence
Scene
Title card
An hour+ of scenes, moving between different groups of characters and usually including scenes in both North and South Korea, and sometimes elsewhere -- sometimes brief flashbacks/memories or montages, often using footage from previous (or in some cases future) episodes
A scene that ends with a freeze frame on a cliffhanger/hook
Followed by an epilogue that is usually a flashback of some kind -- either showing events from years earlier that have bearing on the current situation, or a look at what had been happening offscreen during the leadup to the final scene, to explain how characters got in position to show up unexpectedly, etc.

This took some getting used to. The lesson I learned was not to turn off the TV after the freeze frame, because there would be another scene afterward that contained important information.

Also that opening scenes that appear to be something I'd already watched were not just "previouslies" but were going to show a different perspective on what had already been shown.


And the denouement in the last episode took a long time to get from the point where all seemed resolved in a bittersweet way until a more satisfying resolution to the main plot thread.

I love Dark but those criticisms are pretty fair. I think the first season is the best and as it goes on it gets a bit convoluted. I still really enjoyed it though, I think one thing I've decided is that those kind of issues are just inherent to that kind of show most of the time so I will just sort of roll with what it is able to do. The ending I did find a bit disappointing, but it's sort of the same thing - it's rare that kind of show pulls off a perfect ending so so long as it isn't Lost level bad I'm willing to accept it. I like Gleikh's choreography a lot, but I actually think that's an interesting comparison - in the same way Eteri's team packs tons of stuff into the programs to get the points, it feels like in the internet/social media era, any kind of tv show like Dark sort of has to pack the twists and turns in to hold people's attention and give them things to pick apart and analyze online.

We just got done watching Howard, the documentary about Howard Ashman on Disney+. It was really well done. I didn't realize he'd one stuff besides the Disney things he's known for. I think I might have taken him more seriously if I'd known that he wrote a musical of a Kurt Vonnegut book!

My favorite part is when he explains that films of musicals are dumb.

The newest season of Lucifer (the first eight eps of S5) dropped today on Netflix and I am LOVING it so far! I'm only on episode four in my binge watch but it's been a really enjoyable and entertaining binge for me. Tom Ellis is freaking BRILLIANT. The creativity in the storylines that they've been able to tell now that they're on a streaming service instead of broadcast TV is really awesome. So excited to finish watching these eps and hopefully we don't have to wait another year for the rest of S5!

BTW-I'm up to S9 in my NCIS:LA binge watch and I freaking adore Densi more and more every single episode. The show itself is SO good and I love all the characters and how well they work together. I admit that part of me is bummed that I didn't discover this show sooner but I probably would have thrown something through my TV for every single two parter or for all the insane season finales if I was watching in real time, so it's definitely better that I'm binging and don't have to wait a week between these episodes, LMAO

Thanks to HBO Max, I watched the entire season of Awkwafina is Nora from Queens yesterday, and I love that show. I've been wanting a successor to Broad City and I'm glad to have found it. Love all the actors in it, and love the cousin relationship beween Awkwafina and SNL's Bowen Yang.
