Say, LOL, I know it's 2 years away. But I just thought I'd bring this up. To all our Figure Skating Fans out there, I sure hope that they can come up with a vaccine for this virus going around before the Winter Olympics of 2022. So that all the skaters that qualify can compete safely. What do you all think?

I remain hopeful that they will proceed as planned. The BB won't last forever, and many countries are well past their peak, with others to follow (though I can't predict how long the horror show that is the US will go on).

We'll have a better idea come the (welcome) end of 2020.

They are past the first peak...
Without. vaccine, this BB is not going anywhere until it runs itself out.
Current infection rate is about 3%, you need 60-70% to for that to happen.

Yeah. Right now it's about surviving and helping our researchers and scientists find a cure. Everything else is just fluff. May God help us.

Don't be too sad, be hopeful.

Ha, Ha, I didn't think how that looked, I meant that I had deleted my post not the Olympics...
I decided what I had to say was too negative at this time, so deleted it

Let's remember that the majority of people who become infected and then also have symptoms, recover.

And this is good, but a significant number are asymptomatic carriers that needlessly infect highly vulnerable persons with pre-existing conditions often times leading to unnecessary and untimely death. Are we saying these persons are just collateral damage? Would waiting a year would be unusual cruelty? Just checking.....

Not at all. Every death due to this virus is a tragedy. We all must be careful and I understand exactly what you are saying. And one truth of the statistics is that the majority of people do recover. I have no idea what that means for the future.
(Edit: I am in the over age 65 group so am taking this seriously but trying to keep some positive thoughts in the midst of this).

I really don't see how that changes things like whether or not large sporting events can occur.
True, but I am just trying to hang onto something positive in this horrible situation. I am over age 65 so in that "risk" group just by age, so I stay informed by the science and what I need to do or refrain from to not contract or transmit the *******.

Maybe so! I refuse to be confined by fear. Although I do wear a mask when I have been in public, wash my hands, etc. etc.
Good for you, @DreamSkates - you are very perceptive by protecting yourself (being in a high-risk group) yet resisting the urge to lump everyone together. You have chosen to be a common sense voice in a sea of naysayers envisioning a totalitarian state aka Big Brother. A world that is secretly admired and romanticized because of the power grabbing potential associated with it. Millions are rejecting the 24/7 fearmongering of those genuinely misguided, shite driven model-mongers and politicians who accuse people of precisely the kind of despicable behavior they are engaging in.

Communist, Socialist sympathizers can go pound sand if they think freedom-loving people will bow down to their sick, tyrannical, oppressive ways. Also, exposing bad actors for blatant corruption and criminality (past and present) is not racism; a tag recklessly used to label people who do not share their mindset.

People must speak out against the constant daily drone of calculated, agenda-driven, politically charged, bullsh!t science used to deceive a gullible public with an on-going, aggressive, misinformation, disinformation, propaganda campaign. These are brazen, cowardly attempts to indoctrinate, brainwash, stifle freedom of speech, and confuse the issues to enforce submissive behavior and acceptance, intended to strip away (from the people), fundamental freedoms, and rights. To control and intimidate the masses into dependency. Good luck with that.

There are millions of people who have had enough! People are sick and tired of narrow-minded, self-serving, self-projecting, agenda-driven clowns who cower in their homes (or labs) arrogantly dictating how we are going to pursue our lives. Sorry, not today, not ever.
  • I am very hopeful there will be a vaccine without delay, but in the meantime, life must forge ahead – it always does.
As to how this commentary pertains to the thread topic, it depends on who will be counseling and advising the ISU/IOC.

Correct, but this one truth, statistical fact is purposely buried — not part of the overall discussion because it doesn’t fit the narrative. If people are not paying attention, that’s even better for those who want to keep them ignorant. For those who are paying attention, it’s called drinking the Kool-Aid.

And your medical science degree is from where?

Why don't they postpone the skating and hold it in a location and date where COVID-19 is less likely to occur. My solution is to have Olympic skating in July 2022 in Dubai, Phoenix, Reno or Las Vegas. They have enough venues and hotels. It will be very hot, so the virus couldn't survive in the 90+ degree dry heat.

I wonder if this means the new normal is not to throw anything on the ice, more social distancing in audience (every second row, etc), and spacing competitiors out. It will never be the same again

There is a reason why there are not many skating rinks in Africa, Caribbean and other hot countries. And there is also a reason why many European countries have skating in the autumn, winter and early spring and then they let the ice melt and there is no skating the whole summer. Keeping ice in the hot weather is very expensive, and if there is several thousand people sitting in the arena, it will be even warmer there. So they would need an arena with air conditioning otherwise the ice will melt.

I was also thinking about that. The US is in big trouble, I can't forsee events returning there for a long time. I can however, see events returning to certain countries that's flattened the curve. Canada would probably host a few (like in BC).

With the cancellation of the Grand Prix Final, which was to be the Olympic test event in figure skating, it's not too early to start thinking about this subject again.

It's comparatively easy to reschedule test events that are to be held in indoor arenas. It is more difficult to reschedule the outdoor events, which are to be staged in a semiarid environment.

Does anyone know if other test events have been cancelled, and, if so, which ones?

May I ask why the bleeping out of the name ("**********") of this "disease that shall not be named" (DTSNBN)? I have not visited all that much since March.

I believe a postponement is likely unless people can travel safely again, then it may go as scheduled.
