I did a vegetarian potluck one year in college. We had pumpkin soup, carrot casserole, pumpkin bread and a lot of other stuff. It was pretty good, IIRC.

@PRlady you need to do a potluck. Everyone needs to bring one dish they know they can eat, then the rest is gravy, so to speak.

Normally my mom and I go to the Beau Rivage for casino turkey and all you can drink mimosas. But this year I’m working at Starbucks and my brother will be home for the first time in six years so we’ll be doing a late lunch/early dinner Tday. Which will be nice for the photos but I hate turkey. That’s what was so nice about the casino—I stuffed myself on gyoza, crab legs, and mini creme brulees. And mimosas. Twas magical.

But our menu shall be:
Roasted turkey brined in a sugar/salt/orange solution
Sausage and green apple dressing
Parker rolls
Gravy
Mashed potatoes
Green beans (cooked all day in BACON FAT, no weird soup thing)
Peanut butter pie

I am going to devour the dressing and pie. Possibly the green beans.

I’m making this Mac and Cheese and bringing it over to my in-laws:

Hope it brings some flavor to the table. My MIL is absolutely lovely but her cooking is like a white people food joke a lot of the time. I can’t really handle turkey this year, so I’m all about the sides. :)
The recipe looks wonderful!

If someone has a good sweet potato casserole recipe that is both good and traditional and won't upset my non-American husband like the maple-syrup-and-butter version did, I'd be ever so grateful. :D
I bake yams in the oven like potatoes and then peel and slice them and cook them on the stove in butter and brown sugar with pineapple (and I occasionally add pineapple juice to thin the brown sugar/butter mix so it doesn't burn). You cook them for a long time on low heat until the yams are "candied", turning them over several times. I don't think they're terribly gooey, but they are delicious (and the pineapple soaked with brown sugar are really good)! I don't know if that would upset your husband or not...

Our Thanksgiving meal with a few other empty nester neighbors will be a prime rib roast, choice of garlic mashed potatoes and/or baked sweet potatoes, salad and hot veggie side, plus dessert and anything else that our friends bring. Simple, less mess & cleanup than a turkey, with great leftovers that will actually fit in the fridge.

I would share my Mother's candied sweet potato recipe, but I don't think y'all would make it. Sweet potatoes, butter (lots) and sugar (really a lot), no wonder I'm fat :)

I'd never had stuffing with sausage in it. Our stuffings are always meat free. The first time I had stuffing with sausage, I didn't even know that was a thing. With no warning, this delicious stuffing I normally adore suddenly had sausages in it. It was quite the shock! And it was okay, but I still prefer the stuffing without meat in it.

What is a Parker roll?

I used to make those when my kids were little. Because I actually did things like that then.

I've always made sausage stuffing (and I am making it right now). I hate cornbread stuffing (awaits the wrathful arrival of @rfisher.

Stuffing is like meatloaf--there are so many variations and everyone is rather fiercely partial to just one.

What is a Parker roll?

Parker House rolls, a staple of my childhood.

That's what comes from being a Yankee. I'm not cooking and if I want dressing (the proper term) I'll be forced to eat the disgusting local fare, or just go for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

That sounds just like my grandmother’s and it was always delicious! I haven’t had sweet potatoes like hers since she passed five years ago. They definitely weren’t healthy lol but some things are too good to care!

:drama: It's my Southern exposure that makes me dislike cornbread dressing, as in my mind, cornbread should be coarse and salty with crunchy edges, not that mushy ground-up dressing crap.

Now that I have cooked and/or prepared most of it for cooking, it looks like we will be having:

Appetizers: Bacon-wrapped shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, assorted panino

Dinner:
Turkey that I've dry-brined for days
Sweet potato casserole
Death by mashed potatoes
Sausage stuffing (not a speck of cornbread)
Roasted fall vegetables
Brussels sprouts with balsamic
Rolls
Gravy

Dessert: Cherry, pumpkin, coconut cream, and chocolate mousse pies and cheesecake with whatever fruit topping my SIL brings

I can eat maybe three things on this list :drama:

I can't wait to make this...maybe Saturday or Sunday, as I saw it to late to get supplies for tomorrow. Always happy to see a new cooking blog that isn't just meh.

I'm supposed to make a pie tonight. I am lethargic about said pie. No one is expecting a pie, so I get a pass if I don't make it...except I bought a ton of pie apples this weekend that need to get et.

Also...I miss the GF for the holidays, but I do NOT miss her family tradition sweet potato casserole. I love that she loves it, but I find it utterly inedible and there is always a ton leftover :scream: :shuffle: :saint:

It’s so good!
My husband’s family likes their food bland (🙄) so I used half the seasoning and it it still had good flavor even just half. Her blog is very interesting and she’s a good Twitter follow.

My BIL came back from Thanksgiving in the US all excited about a great recipe for yams that he had at a cousin's. That next Christmas he was diagnosed with AIDs and he died exactly 30 years ago in September. We make this recipe "Uncle Bruce's apples and yams" every year for Christmas. It is sweet but oh so good.

Apples and Yams
4 - 5 yams -peeled, boiled until soft and then sliced
5-6 apples - peeled and sliced

Sauce:
1 cup white sugar
2 cups water
3 tbsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. butter

Cook until you have a nice thick transparent sauce. Place sliced apples and yams in a 9X13 pan or large casserole dish. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes - until apples are soft.

My sister has to work so we are going "simple". Dumplings with gravy & chicken, salad & chocolate cake for desert.

We are in Mexico with family so will be having dinner at one of the restaurants at the resort. We’re going to the one that has a US Thanksgiving option because my nephew wants tradition. He’s 12. The rest of us will probably have seafood of some sort.

I was wondering about that! My lovely niece and husband are making stuffing from GF cornbread so I can eat it. I like sausage stuffing myself but half my relatives don’t eat pork.

I also get a GF pie courtesy of PRkid’s farmer’s market. So basically I can’t eat the rolls. Which I love.

ETA: @oleada I’m sure your DH is a great guy but Askenazi Jewish cooking is bland and boring. Neither my own family nor DH’s kids will eat spicy food. :(

I have not seen a thread wishing; I did see the various recipes for TG dinner. Sorry if someone has already started a thread for this.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the USA! I have so much to be grateful for- family, friends, home, and fsu.

I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

I hope all others outside the US are having a good day too.

Who else is watching the National Dog Show right now on NBC? :D

So far, my favorite is the Pharaoh Hound (Hound Group winner).
