So.....I take it that the USA played well today? ;)

Well except apparently they shouldn’t have celebrated so much 🤔
I am waiting for the new rules from the US Olympic committee or some such organization about how America athletes are no longer supposed to try to win everything and instead just be polite and gracious 😛

Canada beat New Zealand today, 2-0. Canada will advance to the round of 16.

NJL (..along with France, Germany, Italy, England, and the Netherlands. More to follow tomorrow..)

Running up the score on a clearly weaker opponent is generally considered poor form in sports. Even in a sport in which goal differential can count, celebrating like you just won the World Cup when it becomes a blowout is ridiculous. I suspect that despite the public comments I have seen, the US women know this.

What happened in that game mostly shows that there are huge disparities in women's soccer, and that not everyone who gets to the World Cup really belongs there. But maybe Thailand will go on to a Chinese pair like ascent in the future and become a powerhouse...

I think it was less the scoreline and more like the massive celebration and the bragging about the scoreline. Yes, yes, well done, you put a big score on Thailand. Come back to us with the celebration when you beat someone on your level by that many.

It sort of reminds me of the big kid beating up the tiny kid in the playground and then going "YEAH, LOOK AT ME, I'M THE BEST BECAUSE OF THIS!"

Plus, if the US women now lose to anybody else, this is gonna blow back in their faces in a big way.

I gave up watching the match at 8-0 - it was clear the US were going to get more and to be honest their celebrations seemed to get more raucous with each goal - I think that is what has made some people feel a bit uncomfortable. It was clear they were leagues ahead of Thailand and seemed to be focused on getting the record score line.

Sweden beat Thailand 5-1 - they seemed to be less inclined to score a huge amount - and to see the Thai ladies celebrations when they scored - that was nice to see!!

USA and Sweden both win and advance to the round of 16. Plus their winning has Japan advancing to the round of 16, too.

The Round of 16 is set:

June 22
Germany v Nigeria
Norway v Australia

June 23
England v Cameroon
France v Brazil

June 24
Spain v USA
Sweden v Canada

June 25
Italy v China
Netherlands v Japan

Quarter Finals start on June 27
Norway/Australia v England/Cameroon

June 28
FRANCE/Brazil v USA/Spain

June 29
Italy/China v Netherlands/Japan
Germany/Nigeria v Sweden/Canada

Will post more as the games progress...:)

NJL (..FYI - the USA has the most difficult path to the final. They will have Spain, then (probably) France and England to get there. Both France and England have beaten the USA in the past year or so. If they survive that gauntlet they will probably meet Germany - though I think another USA v Japan final would be noteworthy. We'll see how this works out...;)…)

Would love to see Canada in the final. But my faith in the team has been shaken a bit but hopefully they will still make it.

I think we got the easier Round of 16 match by losing that game - Japan is a team I would think most would like to avoid in the knock-out phase - so I'm okay with the result. They will need to be sharper to advance beyond Sweden though.

Sweden may be too difficult for them, but seems possible. Next would be Germany. Good luck with that. Considering the opposition in that side of the bracket I see Germany in the final.

NJL (..Japan has a young team that seems to be good to go in 2023. We'll se how all this ends soon enough..:).. )

Quartefinals are set:

June 27
Norway v ENGLAND

June 28
FRANCE v usa

June 29
ITALY V Netherlands
GERMANY v Sweden

Capitalized teams are my picks to move on to Semi-Finals.

NJL (...FYI - I see France and Germany in the Final with France as the 2019 Champion. Since France's Men won the 2018 Men's World Cup I fear that France could become the world's most obnoxious fans..;)…)

VAR has had too much influence in these championships to be honest. Though why it takes some of the refs over 5 minutes to make a decision when looking back at an incident is just silly.

However the change to the hand ball in the box rule is one that needs to be changed back as attackers are starting to realise that smashing a ball at point blank range at the arm of defender standing right in front of you when the defender is defending and has no chance of moving their arm guarantees you a penalty and the unfortunate defender a booking. That's how the Netherlands managed to beat Japan yesterday who didn't deserve to lose to a penalty gained in that fashion.

France left Rapinoe completely unguarded. Nobody even near her. That’s just totally sloppy.
Go USA - these women are formidable.
