Tarasova/Morozov Cheer Thread

They skate so well and have beautiful programmes but something is missing in the expression department. I can't quite put my finger on it but it looks a bit too "mechanical".

I know this is gonna sound negative: But "the two best programs they've had in four years" is a pretty low bar. . . (panty drop? 80s aerobic routine to "music is my life"?) :) Glad to hear the material is improving, because they really have some high-quality basics and elements!
 
Watching their FD, I couldn't help thinking what a shame it was that they didn't skate this one for the Olympics instead of that atrocious Candy Man FD. I'm glad they've finally gotten a program that's worthy of their talents.

TarMor just did a very long (40 min) fan Q&A. I think you need a VK login to view it, and unfortunately I haven't seen it turn up on YouTube yet. I don't understand much Russian, but I don't think any of them said anything earth shattering. Evgenia is freaking adorable, and you can really tell how different their personalities are. Vladimir is just soooo reserved, how did this guy end up in a performance sport?? (that's not a serious question btw, I know his story, he even goes over it here) I had an especially difficult time understanding him because he's kind of a mumbly speaker, so I think I got more of what Evgenia said.


- They didn't want to do WTT because they were just in Japan and just got back to Russia, so they don't want to travel all the way to back Japan again. Since it's a commercial kind of competition with no world standing points, they decided not to risk skating under those conditions.

- Vladimir likes R&B and hip hop (please do NOT skate to any of that!!!)

- They would like to continue working with Maxim, but that's up to him.

- Vladimir doesn't remember any first impressions of Evgenia, but she remembered him because he was the only ginger at Mozer's rink.

- They were asked about their bad fall on a lift at the 2014 Russian Nationals. She said it was the first time she fell on a lift and it was definitely scary, but the most scared she's been was when she cut her leg before the 2017 Worlds SP.

- They still get asked if they are related to the other famous skating Morozovs or Tatiana Tarasova (they aren't, but Evgenia's mother is actually named Tatiana Tarasova lol). They don't mind it because it's flattering and people will congratulate them about their "relatives'" success. Evgenia mentions that her first coach in Kazan was even another Tarasov, so it's happened her whole life.

- She's from Tatarstan (though she's not Tatar) and learned a little bit of the Tatar language in school. She only remembers a few words, Vladimir tries to prod Evgenia into speaking Tatar but only says the word for "welcome".
 
I was wondering what could be suitable music for them for the next season and two pieces appeared on my CD while I was driving.

Sviridov’s ‘Snow storm’ could be really good for their LP. I remember the 2006 T&M’s SP to that music. Also Bechke & Petrov’s Skate in a pro competition was very good. T&M have the qualities to express this music.

The other is Shostakovich’s Romance from the Gadfly for SP, but the negative is that it makes both programs similar. So may be leave it for the Olympic season.

They could use one of the Strauss waltzes for SP. So it will not be slow (boring) music. They could use Meadowland for their SP (B&S’s SP in 2001).

I am not being very creative.

Maybe not very creative as you put it but very suitable music for pairs skating. Snow storm is beautiful and your other suggestions would all be good for them with their classic Russian skating style.
 
I would suggest two contrasting programs, one more modern or contemporary (at least the last 100 years :) ) and one a 19th C Russian piece from their wheelhouse.

For example: Scheherazade and Joni Mitchell's A Case of You. But maybe she refuses to let people skate to her songs - I don't think I've ever seen even a Canadian skater use her music. A pity as it's so emotional and beautiful.

I was thinking of Debussy too--if Rachael Flatt could skate to La Mer (1903, a bit old but still modernish) so could T/M, or there's Afternoon of a Faun. Claire de Lune is overused and too simple for them IMO.

I really like that new gala program that Lambiel did for them. I think something bluesy like that might work for a short. I don’t think they’re confined to classical—Glam, the program that really more or less let them make their breakthrough in 16-17, was not classical. I just think it takes a very careful choice when it comes to them. Their skating has this innate elegance to it, so you have to have music that utilizes that instead of clashing with it.

For a long program, I’ve been stuck on two pieces for about the last two months. I can’t remember where, but someone made an observation that T/M are air, not fire. Then, not long after that, I rewatched V/M’s 2010 Olympic FD and started thinking it’s a piece of music that could work for T/M too.

I also heard Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini somewhere and got obsessed with the idea of T/M using it. It’s another Rachmaninov, but whatever.;)

ETA: I’m also getting really tired about all the handwringing over their season and of the predictions of doom for their future. I don’t think anyone realizes they were the only Russian skaters to return from last year’s Olympic and world teams and the only skaters on this year’s world team to medal in all of their events this season. Everyone else, all other medalists included, managed to muck up at least one competition (if not more than one) bad enough to miss the podium all together—sometimes by quiet a few places. Maybe they didn’t win Euros or Worlds, but they deserve credit for being the only ones returning from last year’s major events/members of this year’s world’s team to not miss a podium.

I think some of G&G's music could suit them- Vocalise in particular .
I think Die Fledermaus is rather overused and will not suit their elegant style.

About Snowstorm, I was thinking that they could make it more interesting by skating to 'Spring and autumn' by Sviridov for the first minute, which is powerful (for the twist and jumps), and then switch to Snowstorm for the remainder.

Agreed. They did win both of their GPs. They really struggled at the GPF but they were OK at the Euros. They managed to skate two clean programs at worlds. They deserve credit for what they did right. They have so much natural talent that when they turned senior, everyone had high expectations of them, but without good programs they could not develop. After watching their 2019 LP, I feel that they may have found their niche. I hope Trankov can find suitable music for them; may be even get Lambiel involved. He did a good job on their exhibition.

I think last year they could have used Candyman for their exhibition instead of their LP, but it is water under the bridge.

I love Mahler's 5th symphony (used by Gordeeva and V&M). It could work for them, as you suggested.
 
Any mention of Candyman gives me a headache. I honestly can't believe they were settled with the awful program in the Olympic season. Totally killed their momentum and confidence.

Mahler would be marvelous. I love Chopin and would like to see them skate to one of his pieces.

Their 2016 worlds LP was skated to Chopin and it was criticized. I am not sure why. They skated it absolutely clean. At one point Zhenya landed a big throw right in front of me. I remember that ‘Wow!’ Moment.

I think ‘Troika’ could be a good SP music for them. It is powerful and it can showcase their strengths.

I linked it above. It wasn't perfectly clean. He has a hand down in the first SBS jump and she struggles to grab her blade in one of the lifts. But close. The program was nice and she looked happy. Compared to their recent stuff it's a masterpiece. But I think Mahler would be a step forward for them. We have to find a way to get the idea to them!

Are they on Facebook? That may be a good place to post ideas. I do t have faith in their coach. Tamara used to accept music ideas from fans of B&S. I had sent her a few but she already knew the music.
