As @clairecloutier pointed out in another thread, they need to change the rules so he doesn't take a hit on such an amazing combo. It is so Yuzu-like to do it anyway just because it's a mountain to conquer.

He has stated that he would want to do 4A, 4Lz, and 4F. When a reporter asked him if he would do 4A he said he would definitely do the 4A while the reporter is still alive. The 4A is technically his only reason to continue competing.

If anyone is capable of doing the 4A, it is Yuzuru. This is the Ice Scope tracker implemented by Fuji TV to measure the 3A by the men and Yuzuru's 3A has 70 cm in height, 3.62 m in length and you could see the list included other skaters: https://twitter.com/BaseValue1/status/1108704788135317505

A: Honestly, to speak frankly, after PyeongChang, I was really unsteady. Before the season began it was the same. There was the feeling that perhaps it was because I had not firmly set my purpose. But I skated while thinking that “I must do it, I have to do something”. Right now, in the way I said earlier, through this season, finally I could see my origins. After all, sports are enjoyable. I want to further experience that feeling which is like a thrill that wells up when I see a strong opponent, and on top of that to be able to think that I want to win. It feels that the 4A is also here now for that purpose.

Just watched this. Wow! He was amazing. He looked reasonably healthy to me. I loved the black & gold costume, very reminiscent of Plushenko. If only he had skated a clean SP, they might have marked him even higher for this. There is beauty and power and completeness to his skating. We are very lucky to watch Yuzuru skate. I have seen him skate live just once, at the 2016 worlds.

I hope we get to see a 100 percent healthy Yuzuru next season. I have missed him so much, it feels like years since he competed in the first two GPS this season.

I watched his exhibition too. It was lovely. Was it Japanese music?

BTW had Yuzuru landed the 4S in the SP and had he landed the 4S better in the LP, he could have won. It's pure math.
The margin of 22.45 points between Nathan and Yuzu sounds awful on paper, but it could be accounted for in a fairly straightforward manner using the 2 jumping mistakes that Yuzu had: the popped 4S in the SP and the UR 4S in the LP. If Yuzu had landed those 2 Salchows properly, all else being equal, he could have won. That’s not my crazy Hanyu fan persona talking, it’s math.

His (relatively) clean Otonal SP was awarded 110.53 at Rostelecom Cup so that mistake in the SP in Saitama cost him upward of 15 points - 14 of which was because of the missing element itself, and the rest because of the reduction in PCS it induced (and I’d be the first to admit that it should’ve cost him even more had the judges strictly followed the ISU recommendation on PCS for programs containing a serious error).

His clean 4S in the LP at GP Helsinki was awarded 13.44 points, so the UR in Saitama cost him about 7.5 points.

(at least) 15.00 + 7.5 = 22.5, which is enough to cover the margin and allow Yuzu to win, and that’s before we account for the fact that a cleaner LP would’ve easily netted him more than 95.84 in PCS.

I’m not throwing these numbers out here to kick off a game of what-ifs. I’m doing this only to show you that the hot take of “Yuzu couldn’t have won even if he had skated cleanly” is bullshit. You don’t have to swallow it from anyone, not even Yuzu himself.

Now proper advice should be that Yuzuru should rest well and find a way to heal his ankle properly. And it seems to me Yuzuru does know he needs to rest as he has come back to Canada right away this morning.

He also said in an interview that competing against Nathan is giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Excerpt: "I'm happy that there is someone now that I'd like to compete against and win and become a better skater. Because I hit my objectives of winning two Olympics. My motivation to skate was unstable. What I like to do is to go up against a really strong rival (...)"

He said even surgery could not help so... he has been injured in that part too many times. I honestly could just say I am half-half that he still wants to stay in the competition after so many pains.
A huge part of me will be sad if he retires but another part will be glad to see him gets no more pain from the competition. Yet he still wants to get that 4A so... I can only wish.
I never know how long he will stay so I can only treasure the time he still wants to compete.
