2018-2019 Canadian Ladies News and Updates!

Daleman, Austman, Chartrand, Pineault and presumably Mallet (she currently is training off the ice) all have byes to Canadians. Austman and Pineault have chosen to compete at Challenge so that should mean the top 15 finishers at Challenge will qualify, with #16 on standby in case Daleman does not use her bye.

ETA:
Well. Alison aced the long. Only a slight UR on the 2A - 3T combo but +GOE everywhere else.
Schumacher's jumps as listed in the live FS scoring protocol:
3Lz
3S+2T
2A+3T< (her only jump with - GOE, just -0.2)
3Lo+2T
3F
3S
2A

All level 4s and 60.85 TES in her 112.37 FS to Madame Butterfly - impressive performance today, maybe the best I've ever seen her skate.

Well, based on today it looks like Alison is making me eat my words. Great jumping. Still, the overall skating quality, stretch, and performance is really lacking in her FS. I hope someone can help her with this, IMO it is really holding her back from making more of an impact. As it is, she could already make top 5 at Nationals. Cotop and Long had really lovely skating but the jumping was not quite as strong. A lot of the other skaters seem to need help with stamina. If Alison repeats today's FS with a better SP, she should probably go to Jr Worlds, but I am curious to see how the top juniors do at Nationals also.

Alison is a strong jumper, but you're right about the rest. She doesn't seem to know what to do with her arms, so she waves them about intermittently without reference to the music or even to her body position. And she isn't expressive, despite skating to the very emotional Madama Butterfly. It's as if she is skating with the music as background while she concentrates almost exclusively on her jumps.

Junior Worlds is probably a better choice for her. In the JGP this year, she did finish top 10 at one of her events. However, at the JGP in Canada, she finished behind Hannah Dawson, who just won the Junior Challenge.

To me her arms are a problem. I saw improvement in them when she was skating pairs with Zack Daleman but overrall presentation is lacking in the upper body. (I was hoping Lubov would help her as her arms were so beautiful) I am wondering how much better her jumps would be if her arms were used properly. I would definitely reccomend ballet classes for her.

I am going to predict the podiums at Canadians..... 1. Alison Schumacher 2. Alaine Chartrand 3. Larkyn Austman (that is assuming that Daleman and Mallet are not competing).

Since none of the Canadian ladies are models of consistency, anything can happen at nationals. A clean Schumacher could definitely medal. I hope that if anyone medals who does not have the worlds TES minimums that Skate Canada will give them a chance to get them. I mean Pineault is one of only four skaters who has it currently and her best finish at nationals was 7th and she was only 8th last year. If Daleman and/or Mallet aren't at nationals and Pineault finishes 8th again should she get to go worlds by default?

I can't wait to see how this plays out.

But I think it would be a wasted opportunity not to send one of the younger ones to worlds as the third member this year, should one of the younger ones skate well enough at nationals to earn it.

I just hope that the judges are not as crazy at Nationals as they were at Challenge. The score given, and I do mean given, to Aurora Cotop was out of this world crazy. Austman was overscored, but it was required because they had to put her above Cotop. Unfortunately that made her lead after the short too big when compared to Alison, Sarah, Olivia, and a bunch of others. Now, in the end it didn’t matter because although Alison had a fab long Austman still, IMO, deserved the win. At Nationals, they need to be a little less exuberant with the sal and toe skaters and remember that this is senior and give credit to those landing flips and lutzes and triple triples in the short. No amount of presence should win over a solid skate with a clean 3/3. They key for Canadian Ladies is to qualify for the free at worlds, a 3/3 or at a minimum a flip and lutz or loop and a lutz is required.

But judges aren't reaching into a bag and pulling out a 59. Let's compare Cotop to Tamura since I know that's what you mean...

Combo
Cotop 3t-2t with +2s = 6.17
Tamura 3z-3t with 0 and 1s = 10.34

Solo jump
Cotop 3s with +3s = 5.5
Tamura 3loop with 0 and 1s = 5.0

2ax
Cotop +2s = 4.22
Tamura +3s= 4.55

Steps
Cotop level 4 with +3 = 4.99
Tamura level 3 with -1 to +3= 3.83

Layback
Cotop level 3 with +2 and +3 = 2.98
Tamura level 3 with -1 to +4 = 2.83

Flysing spin
Cotop level 4 with +1 to +4 = 3.9
Tamura level 3 with -2 to +2 = 2.81

Combo spin
Cotop level 4 with +3s = 4.55
Tamura level 3 with 0 to +4 = 3.42

Overall TES
Cotop 32.31, Tamura 32.78

Overall PCS
Cotop 26.80 (mostly 6s to 7s)
Tamura 23.52 (mostly 5s and 6s)

So Cotop was down 4 points based on her weak combo and then pulled back to even with the spins and steps. PCS to me seems about right with the performances given. So where is the overscore in your opinion?

And IMO, since almost everyone kinda tanked the FS, only the podium finishers looked remotely competitive at a Worlds level. But the SP placements to me looked fine. If you want to see a 70, take Tamura's jump content and slap it on a better skater like Austman or Cotop...

So maybe not the place to post this but just saw Kaetlyn Osmond's appearance on tonight's broadcast of Canada's Smartest Person Jr. on CBC.

She was in a segment where she told 3 stories while attached to a lie detector. (Pretty gimmicky) The Juniors had to decide for each story if her story was true or false, then after the revealed their guesses, the guy operating the detector would indicate thumbs up for a true story or thumbs down for a false one. She looked really great in a red sleeveless dress. her stories were:

1) While with Scott Moir and Patrick Chan during the Olympics she received a gift from a fan which she later realized was actually meant for Tessa. She wrapped it back up and gave it to Tessa for her birthday.

2) She once got a call from the police to come down to the jail where they were holding her dogs (not the pound, the jail). Someone had left her gate open and the dogs got loose.

3) After having won the World Championship and tripping on the carpet during the victory lap, she was at another competition where she tripped on a camera cable and caused the 20,000 Euro equipment to fall and break.

Only one of the contestants got all 3 correct, one got all 3 wrong, one got one right, and the rest got 2 out of 3.

I don’t think I’m going out on much of a limb here by saying I think Kaetlyn is done with competitive skating. I will miss her, but her career has very few holes left to fill. 3 national titles, 3 Olympic medals, world champion. That’s nothing to sneeze at and I hope she finds her spot in pro skating. She’s a very special skater who could have a great pro career if she plays her cards right.

Ps @Skate Talker which of her stories were true? :p

If Kaetlyn is done, I’m glad that she got to have such success and that she is happy with her accomplishments and career. If she’s not, I’ll be just as glad to see her!

So which were true? I suppose 3 was false because she hasn't done a competition since Worlds, but what about the others?

Firstly just wanted to say if anyone has access to CBC on demand or CBC tv app it was Season 1 Episode 5 - the redemption show.

Ha ha, wondered if anyone was interested enough to ask. I agree #3 was a dead giveaway as soon as she said the competition was after the Olympics and I haven't reviewed it but I think she even said it was the European Championships, which of course have not taken place since the Olympics and for which she has never been eligible. I might have believed #1 if she stopped with a claim that she was given something meant for Tessa by mistake, but never would believe she would then keep it to re-wrap & give to Tessa for a birthday present. Sooo as it turns out #2 was true and she said she hoped the dogs learned their lesson.

Just a bit of clarification on story #2 - I believe she said that her father had taken the dog(s) to the off-leash dog park which was fenced in but the fence was on the other side of some trees. When the dog(s) went into the trees her father didn't worry but he didn't know that someone had left the gate open. She got a call from the police to come and get her dog(s).

Does anyone know if Daleman is training?????
I was at the CC for one day in late Nov. and she was not there. I would assume that taking care of her health means being completely away from the rink. I could be wrong. I do hope she finds her way back. I miss her.

My sources at CC tell me she's back on the ice but not skating all that much.

In my sources words, "She's often there. She's sometimes on the ice but usually when I see her she's just sort of sitting there. If she has plans to go to Nationals, she must be training at irregular hours"

My takeaways is that yeah in some way or shape she's back to training but maybe not pushing it. I have to think if she monitors well she can skip Nationals and do 4CC/World's if she's up to it. I'm sure SC giving her all the leeway they can.
