ISU Grand Prix Assignments 2018/19 season

I think it's a matter of optics: where there was only the 7-/14-day rules and all withdrawals before then were "required" to be filled, then there was incentives for the Feds and the hosts to be sure official notification was made based on which side of the line the withdrawal should be recorded. Now, they don't have to fill those spots unless they lose three at the same time before the 14-day-mark. Even though there haven't been notably more last-minute withdrawals over the last few seasons, there may be a perception that there have been this season, to account for lack of replacements.

However, I don't think it's at all practical or should be expected to replace skaters the week of the event, especially since that's half a week, with the Leaders Meeting happening during official practices, unless it's a host spot in a discipline where there are a lot of options and/or a high-volume training area like Moscow, Detroit, or Montreal. There's a lot of organizing happening besides making last minute visa and travel arrangements, and the more the rush, the greater chance for error. If there are subs in those cases, that's gravy.

I think the way the replacements are selected, though, leaves much to be desired.

I wonder how athletes were chosen to compete at Skate Canada, Skate America, Trophee Lalique, the NHK Trophy, and Moscow News back then?

And Nation's Cup.

I don't know. It wasn't centralized with a Grand Prix commission before the Champions Series/Grand Prix started. I don't know whether the host federations invited other federations to send X number of entries or whether they invited specific skaters personally.

I did a bit of a check and the choreographer to the stars, David Wilson, competed when it was called the Fujifilm Trophy back in 1986.

If/When Gracie Gold withdraws, is Russia allowed to have only 10 ladies? It'd be such a shame that CoR will have 2 unfilled ladies spots.

The competition is going to go on regardless of last-minute withdrawals. There was a Cup of Russia one year where three ice dance teams withdrew between the short dance and the free dance, and I think there were only 8 teams to start the competition.

Especially with the rise of Senior B's for top skaters, I think they should consider saying that you must withdraw from both GPs if you plan to withdraw before your first event.
Now, it may not be fair to skaters who are day-to-day recovering from injury, but it's also dangerous for them to come back too fast from an injury. It's also unfair to the skaters who could've otherwise have been invited only to have someone withdraw too late to call up the alternate.

TBH I don't think Gracie with withdraw. She's a fighter.

I think it's a bit shitty that audiences go to the expense of often buying tickets, hotel accommodation, and airfares, only to be handed this lack of consideration. Not to mention the skaters who are potentially losing out when athletes withdraw.

It's like attending a broadway play with actors absent. It makes me wonder if these organisations wonder where some of their finance is coming from!

I think it's time for the ISU to implement a stand-by policy where reserves are nominated in case skaters drop out.

I can be very hard to travel on such short notice for competitors - not just travel arrangements, readiness, but potential visas for skaters and coaches and possibly federation officials.

I think the 14 days make sense.

You would be amazed at how quickly Russia organised and approved visas for everyone (athletes, coaches, media) when the World Championships were transferred to Moscow in 2011.

Is Rostelecom Cup used as Gracie Gold's bye through to Nationals?

Does Gracie have to compete through both phases of Rostelecom to get her Nationals bye? If she just shows up in Moscow and, for whatever reason, pulls out before the SP (heaven forbid), does she still get the Nationals bye?
