The Dance Hall 6: We're All Off Our Rockers 2018-2019

I'm in the minority where I didn't like G/P's FD. Two of my favorite programs from them have been the Beatles program and the Hitchcock program. Maybe it is because I don't really care for the music as much.:slinkaway They have some nice transitions and lifts etc. but the program as a whole doesn't do much for me at this time. I'm hoping it will get better as the season progresses.[/QUOT

I don't dislike it but their FD doesn't captivate me like their Tango (FD) did two seasons ago. I really truly thought it a masterpiece!

I didn't dislike G&P's RD, but I find today that it didn't stick with me. (Except for the squatting twizzles, which look to me nowhere near as difficult as Stepanova & Bukin's, yet tentative, unattractive, and as though they were about to topple over). We are getting a lot of twizzles variations in the wake of the new rules, and I like most of them. But not these.

This is interesting, G/P's twizzles struck me as more difficult than S/B's, since Piper and Paul have to move up and down in synchronicity, instead of holding the low position for longer (which I could see as potentially being more tiring for those muscles). I've also never thought S/B's low twizzles are attractive anyway, so for me at least G/P's are more interesting. I will give you that they seemed tentative here so I'm looking forward to seeing if they gain confidence in them over time.

Thanks for the explanation. I actually don't prefer the song (and didn't know it) and the reaction to the FD has surprised me. Giving it some context (i.e. the last song Tupac listened to) helps me understand there's an emotional connection to the music for many people. There are some parts of the FD I like but I am not as sold on it or as excited by it as so many.

FWIW I was familiar with the song and didn't know its connection to Tupac, but was fond of it anyway because I think it's beautiful and I enjoy the story. I loved this FD (and think it has a ton of room for improvement at this point).

I don't know who Robert Christgaus is either, but those that don't like Gilles/Poirier free dance are going to be in for a very disappointing season. :shuffle:

"Vincent" is one of the most beautiful pop/folk songs ever written and if you think it's boring then there is something wrong with you. :P

Robert Christgau was a rock critic for the Village Voice who headed their yearly Pazz and Jop best of the year list. He was known for his strong opinions that some times were contrary to a lot of popular ones. He didn't like progressive rock, art rock, etc. or what he perceived as pretentiousness in serious music. He was known for his short, some times weirdly worded, but concise and economic paragraphs that he'd call album reviews. There was sort of an art to them. One of my favorite lines was when he said of Paula Cole (of "Where Have all the Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want to Wait" fame), "Where Kate Bush overwhelms petty biases as inexorably as Led Zep, Cole is just a romantic egotist who can't resist turning ordinary human problems into three-act dramas. Kate Bush fans will love her." Sonic Youth and Lou Reed were notable non-fans of Christgau's.

I mentioned him in this thread because in his review of McLean's album American Pie, he told readers to just buy the "American Pie" single "unless you're in the market for a song about how nobody understood Van Gogh", then to go ahead and buy the whole album.

You tell them like it is.

I've reviewed all the RDs and FDs so far and I must say my favourite RDs are:

1. H/D - maturity, complexity and intensity
2. W/P - sophistication and velvety smoothness
3. G/P - very noirish in feeling, oozing sophistication and attack
4. S/D - choreography so fresh and hip. Adria Diaz, nuff said.
5. S/K - amazing energy and attack

However, I only have two picks for FD:

1. G/P - made me cry, pulled me in. Poirier reminded me of Moir at times
2. H/D - fresh, crisp, unexpectedly delightful, voice overs and all.

Looking forward to seeing the others.

I agree. That FD is really really well put together, and it resonates with them.
I am not that enthusiastic about their tango at the moment.

Who knew we had a bunch of Robert Christgaus up in here?
I'm no Xgau but I had the pleasure of being edited by him back in my freelancer days.

And I think G/P's free is lovely. Wasn't sure if the cover would hold up based on what I've heard by the artist covering it, but I like it a lot.

G&P have great programs this year, there is still a few technical issues they need to work out in their fd, but overall the fd is a masterpiece Poirier has really improved a lot, they are looking good for an upset victory at skate Canada.

I'll settle for close second, though I suppose if they're ever going to pull out a win like that, the conditions right now are about as good as they're likely to get (being the top Canadian team in the Grand Prix, so bonus fed points; H/D doing back-to-back events with this being the second one; having two programs that people seem to really like).

its probably gonna be close h&d might have a small lead after the SD , but the FD could tell the story hubbel and Donahue are in trouble with that fd, that Said gilles and Poirier will need to hit their levels and be better technically than at neblehorn.

Dunno if it will be close between H&D and G&P at SC. Think S&K could factor as well. And considering who we are talking about here, it is totally possible one or two or three of those teams could royally muck up.

Probably all three will not do it in the same competition:slinkaway.

I despise the RD and already the music makes me long for hip hop. If I watch the RD at all this year it will be with the sound off.
This is funny because just about everyone thought hip hop was going to be awful and then just about everyone loved it.

The most painful to watch SD season was Paso Doble for me. Hip Hop ended up being entertaining. We get Musical, Operetta and Broadway next year.:shuffle:

I LOVED the Paso Doble SDs... it was varied and fun.
Unfortunately I am not at all into Musical and Broadway ... so, not looking forward to that one:scream:

I love Broadway.
I love the tango.
I love paso doble.
I love quickstep.
I love blues.
I love almost anything upbeat: folk dances, jive/swing, Charleston, cha cha, mambo, samba, even enjoy a once-upon-a-decade polka.

I do not love waltzes, the rhumba, or the foxtrot.

I'm really looking forward to the musical RDs. I'm hoping one of my favourite teams builds theirs around "Helpless" from Hamilton.

I expect at least half a dozen My Fair Ladies, someone will branch out into a Camelot or a Carousel and think they're being very daring and original, The Sound of Music will make at least one appearance but not by a European team, someone will confuse everyone by remembering that The Merry Widow is an operetta, and nobody will actually think to go for the greatest cliche of all: a Gilbert and Sullivan overture*. And maybe, just maybe, an Australian team will have the bright idea of skating to The Boy From Oz...including Tenterfield Saddler? I can hope?

*Somebody should totally use the overture to The Gondoliers, as it's gorgeous.

Isn't there that musical version of War and Peace (Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812)? Is that a musical or just a play (I haven't seen it obviously). ok I could google it. ok I did. It IS a musical. Now the next question: is it any good?
