From Russia with Love [#30]: If There Are Test Skate Videos, It Must Be Fall 2018

Eteri's face moves just fine, when she wants to..... She is into constant improvement of herself, and some years ago took Public Speaking classes, where they teach you to keep your upper facial muscles still and calm, and only to use the muscles around the mouth, it supposed to look classier and more professional.

And I just thought that was botox....

It's not really her youthful appearance but the fact that her forehead doesn't move at all. It looks like she had some injections for her smile lines as well.

True.

Honestly, if I paid that kind of money and faced the needle, I'd want a better result than what she got.

:D that's ok... i'll forgive her "still forehead".... Everything else in her internal and external world moves and creates and progresses.. she, her assistant coaches, and the girls... they move so well, and higher and higher on the podium....

It is not only the forehead but also the side of her eyes, it doesn’t crease at all when she smiles. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few injections went there to prevent crows feet wrinkles.

Evgenia just did her SP at the Autumn Classic in Canada. It wasn't perfect, but the program itself has improved even since test skates. I didn't love her dress, but it was a different style compared to what we've seen from her the last few years, which is nice.
Looking happy in the K&C with Brian and Tracy. Not her highest score by a long shot (about 70 points), but she was pleased.

Clear she's still working out a lot of kinks, and still has a ways to go, but things are looking good, and she looks happy.

I'm not feeling this program or the performance....

When Eteri said that 4 out of the 9 ladies at senior test skates were her students, which ones is she training? I didn't think she had that many senior ladies anymore?

She definitely doesn’t have 4 Russian senior ladies. From senior ladies she only has Alina and Turnsynbaeva who doesn’t skate for Russia and haven’t been at the test skates. But she might have counted Tsurskaya and Panenkova and Medvedeva, because they left her only this off season so she could argue that she made them into who they are now. She would have more influence on their development than their current coaches.

She said that up to the test skate time these 4 ladies, Zag, Med, Tzur, Panen were all trained by her, which is true. 3 switched only in May.

Med was already a Senior lady for the last 3 seasons, of which she won 2 years in a row Gold WC, EC, GPF and past season 2 Olympic Silvers, and several GP golds.

Tsurskaya was also a Senior for the last 2 years, and with Eteri, and also won some medals.
Zagitova is Senior all last season and she also has GP, GPF, EC, Nat., Olympic Golds..

So it is incorrect when people say that Eteri never had any "successful Senior ladies".
She had them, for the last 3 seasons and with all Gold medals.. :D And that is what she is trying to say.

Medvedeva has been dumped by the judges in PCS marks! Wow they have seriously plummeted since leaving Eteri. She used to get mid 9's. Now only mid 8's. Guess that's what happens when you don't have RUS fed backing you. The PCS marks are shockingly low.

People don’t say that she never had any successful senior ladies. Of course she had, because both Lipnitskaya and Medvedeva were seniors when they got lots of medals. But people say that Eteri does not know what to do with senior ladies long-term because senior ladies always feel they have to move on. Senior ladies are replaceable in Tutberidze’s group after a few seasons. Well, not even just ladies, the same happened with Voronov and Pitkeev. Eteri’s training methods are not suitable for senior skaters because their bodies can’t keep up with the youngsters, they overtrain, get injured and then Tutberidze is not the most patient person and does not deal when skater does not deliver, even if it is because of injury. That’s what people say.

It's particularly egregious since her PCS are one of the marked post-move improvements so far.
Then again the scoring was tough for everyone, this is a smaller competition, and she looked shaky/nervous, so I'll only be exceptionally mad if the PCS scoring continues.

Post Olympic score deflation - watch them build back over the next four years and by 2022 there'll be no room at the top - everyone will get 10's.

Actually last 2-3 months there has been a lot of "special interests" inspired commentary (in Russian circles/press) with blanket statements "Eteri is only great with juniors" (I won't go into who, when, why said it).

So in the last 3 video interviews by NTV a lot of Eteri's replies were not always direct answers to the specific questions, but rather summaries of all issues raised against her and accusations. Her last few interviews are "continuations of on going stories", but if one does not read russian sports publications, then it is hard to catch what she is talking about.

Eteri has never had (yet) successful fully grown adult skaters.

A term "fully grown adult" is extremely subjective, and not part of Figure Skating classifications. In figure skating there are two top level classifications: "Juniors" and "Seniors". For the last 5+ years Eteri is successful in both.

She looks fabulous. Jealousy is a disease.

Maybe an "Eteri ... love her or hate her" thread could be started in the Trash Can?

LET’S DO IT!!!

When I saw the 70 I was very surprised. IMO it’s the best SP she’s had. I don’t mind Alina but I do prefer Evgenia, so I hope Evgenia’s scores go back up. There are still some things she can work on but I like the program so far and it can only grow from here.

She has worked hard the last few years to make her skating close to her marks and she was getting marks for being perfect. She did not train for 4 months and then only trained for 2 months, got her choreo. and so mostly worked on basic technique and muscle strength so she would not hurt herself again....They are working now on diff. technique so she can up her difficulty. She is in the middle of a long process but already there are improvements. They are not looking at score boards but what is happening on the ice and they are pleased. Her injuries were from overuse. Procedures are decided on to 1) keep her happy and healthy and not in pain. 2)be the GOAT

Maybe because the skate was tentative and not that great.

I was surprised how many Russian hardcore Zhennya's fans, on various russian skating chats, were shocked (but not unhappy) to see Med ahead of Bradie... many thought that Bradie would be ahead. Med does not do the judging, i hope it is not held against her, it was explained later that Bradie had UR..

Elena Vaichekhovskaya, who is in Canada covering the event for r-sport publication, just posted an article covering the 1st day of competition. In the text about Medvedeva, she thinks that "it's not a bad start for now" but the surprising comment was (summary):

"it is now time for Evgenia to learn to lose (that it is possible to lose), and to learn to accept it without making it a tragedy (end of life), there are many factors to handle now".

(the article works fairly well in google.translate since the language used in proper, not slang).

We have prebubescent skaters winning the Olympics, but that still doesn’t make them adult by any mean. That doesn’t take anything from her accomplishments. It is just a fact.
