2018-19 Programs and Choreographers

I would imagine that skaters still have to pay choreographers for their time, even if they later scrap programs.

Payment for choreography is usually made immediately upon completion of the choreography. It is possible some choreographers ask for a deposit up front, but I have not encountered that. Generally there is a flat rate for a program which varies depending on whether it is a long or a short, and then expenses and ice time are added to that.

I'd think choreographers would be hesitant to work with someone who bails on programs as soon as they are presented with something they like better.

I don’t know for sure having never been in the position of dd changing choreography mid season, but I suspect in Karen’s case, the number of choreographers who are willing to work with her is shrinking.

James/Cipres
FS choreographed by Charlie White (speculation is that the music is something from Lemonade by Beyoncé)

The speculation about Beyonce's Lemonade album is obviously because of Vanessa referencing Charlie helping them make lemonade out of lemons... :D

I suppose skaters prefer to keep new programs as close to the vest as possible in most cases, although it's difficult to keep information from leaking unless rinks are on lockdown during program training and choreographing. Even then, I suppose the music can be heard and thus there are unwritten rules about being discreet on behalf of your fellow training mates.

I added Angela Wang's choreographers to the spreadsheet 2 weeks ago but forgot to post her IG source link in this thread: https://www.instagram.com/p/BjLrGQTFDj3/?taken-by=angelawangster
Never imagined I would be lucky enough to work with such remarkable people. Stoked to have had @tanith_white choreograph another LP for me and @karenwkwan and @michellewkwan a SP. It’s going to be an exciting year!

^^ That's nice for Angela. I'm glad to hear she's happy with her new programs. And what great skating legends she's working with too!

Rohene Ward ... posted on his IG that he had choreographed a SP for Karen Chen ... Karen never mentioned it herself. I think it's a good thing that she's working with different choreographers and seeing what fits (or not) during the off season.

Sure, whatever works best for Karen. She's paying the choreographers she works with. So I suppose if she decides to scrap a program, she's the one spending the money and is apparently able to afford exploring options during the off-season. Since Karen posted on her IG about the Massimo Scali sp, then maybe she's inspired enough to stick with this one.

I just added Katia Alexandrovskaya/Harley Windsor's choreographers to the spreadsheet based on the BIG NEWS posted by @misskarne in the Pairs Discussion thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...wo-skating-as-one.101317/page-23#post-5372511

ETA that a separate news thread has now been started in GSD - here's the relevant excerpt:
Our short program choreography starts next week with Julie Marcotte in Montreal and the following week with Massimo Scali in Detroit for our free program.

I don't know if I'd say it's the best; but it's probably the least often used. So that alone makes it a preferable choice. :D

I very much doubt it is the least often used, though I do think it has decreased in popularity since Sasha's R&J in 2006. Prokofiev was one of the top four pieces of any choice of skating music over a decade ago (right behind Tchaikovsky's R&J). The Prokofiev seems less prevalent right now than the Nino Rota and Luhrman versions. But that's a relatively recent phenomenon.

Though, I realize Prokofiev seems more overdone to me than it currently is because I rewatched the 98 Olympic FD five million times, which included Anissina & Peizerat's R&J.

When James/Cipres asked for program music suggestions on twitter a few months I ago. I eagerly gave them a few suggestion. Beyonce was not one of them. I suggested Twenty one pilots - "Heathens" and some song from The Weekend w/Kendrick Lamar - "Pray for Me" or "All The Stars" and something else.

Aliona Kostornaia
SP: portraying an Angel (Max Richter’s Departures (lullaby) from the Leftovers; November)
I like these pieces very much, and Aliona can move very well to such music....... but Aliona an "angel"? i doubt that the "angel" is the image she is after ....

... and "Juliette" for LP?..... i think someone should gift Aliona a copy of "Moll Flanders"..

Liza Tuktamysheva
LP “You Don’t Love Me” by Caro Emerald and “Petite Fleur” by The Hot Sardines
Love these 2 pieces, love it!

Um ... that's what I meant. In recent years, Prokofiev is arguably the least used. Both the Rota and Luhrman versions have been heard more often, and the newer Abel Korzeniowski version has also been very common. The last skaters who made an impression on me by skating to the Prokofiev version were Maria Sotskova and Ashley Wagner, a couple years back. Although there may have been others too.

Denis skated to it in 2016-17. Bobrova & Soloviev used it in 2015-16, the year we had the twenty-odd R&J's. They weren't the only ones. No, the Prokofiev R&J's I've seen recently didn't leave an impression for me.

The last skaters that made a major impression on me skating to Romeo & Juliet of any kind were Sasha, Anissina & Peizerat, Fusar-Poli & Margaglio, & Marin Honda. (In F-P&M's case, this was partly due to the wings & bell bottoms). I think we all have our iconic R&J's, and once you have them, it's hard for anything that is used multiple times a season to leave an impression.

:cheer2: good choice for Satoko.....not sure if its Tom Dickson or Lori Nichol for FS?

Satoko said Daisuke used this music!! which was Invierno Porteno & Primavera Porteña by Tango Siempre - so not sure if this will be used??

I believe she said she's going to Canada to get the SP choreographed. And I remember seeing somewhere earlier that it was going to be Lori for the SP and Tom for the FS.
