Evgenia Medvedeva Cheer thread

Good hopefully that means she will get better programs

But yeah this is very popcorn worthy news...wonder why the split

I am VERY excited. She will have to do the skills classes with Tracy. I recall Tracy saying that in the beginning Javi was not fond of these and it actually took some time to convince him it was necessary. Haha.

Just think how different Evgenia could look with David Wilson, Jeff Buttle, Shae-Lyn choreo and the skills classes. Love her to begin with, but I honestly think she has nothing to lose and everything to gain here.

When you look at the big picture :

She's one the oldest (or the oldest) of Eteri's group. We don't know how well Eteri can coach her at 18+.
years old.
Some of her teamates are throwing 4Lz next to her. And they are 13 or 14.
You need extremely strong basics to keep up when you get older, because your jumps might start declining.
If anything, Brian Orser taught harder jumps to Javi and Yuzu at +20 years old (Javi even more).
Evgenia needs to be in an "adult" surrounding, I know that if it were me, I would want that. Professionals, realistic coaches, and more importantly, international training center. Yes, they work.
We are still to see if this is confirmed. But truthfully, she doesn't have a choice if she wants to fight for that OGM. I like that she's taking the chance, plusRusFed needs someone to asses if it's worth training abroad (and open funding possibilities for the future). If she fails, she would have tried anyway. I don't know, but you can't realistically fight with 15 year-old landing Quads all over the place, unless you decide to make a change.
And last point... artistically, it is needed ! :scream:

Zhenya is a very smart young lady. She made a very shrewd decision to leave Eteri's group. She has widened her options and given herself the opportunity to skate for many years. Whether she wins the OGM or not, this is going to set her up for a happy life and not just short term excitement.

I disagree with those who criticize her artistry. She has already proven herself to be a very good artist, with her Ana Karenina LP and particularly with her Kukushka exhibition. Of course she can progress, but to say she has no artistry is plain wrong.

I don't believe anyone has said she has no artistry. When she won her first worlds she definitely lacked artistry, body lines extensions and yet she rec'd PCS very high. She has worked on all these things whether she was directed to do so or not in the last 2 years but there is still quite a bit she can improve and she appears to really want that. Good on her...she has the goods to become a legend..not just a flash in the pan and she has the personality and work ethic to achieve this. She needs a team behind her who wish her to succeed in every way and give her the opportunity to do so. Which shows is she performing in in the near future?

^I remember when Med first came into the public's awareness, after Russian Nationals 2015, many people were in hysterics over her artistry; one poster declared her as the "most artistically mature 16 year old skater ever". Its similar to the Kostornaia effect you see happening now.

I think Med is very artistic, but her artistry has not been a focus area of development in the last quad, and so people have forgotten that she was first known for her artistry, not for her tano backloading ability.

I've never posted in this thread before, but I felt that I really, really, needed to point out how much guts it takes from Medvedeva to do this coaching change, and the best place to do without being judged is here.
I frankly never liked her skating style, and although she always seems adorable, I couldn't feel much love for her, but this... Damn, it's hard not to root for her. I'm truly seeing her with different eyes now, and I wish her nothing but the best with Brian. I'm sorry it took me so long to see her character, but I'll be glad to see where she goes from here. If there's someone who can beat Eteri's girls, it's certainly her. Hurray for her, and here's to more years of success :cheer2::cheer2:

“I want a long career for myself and that’s why these changes are happening in my life - Evgenia said - you can not even imagine how I’ m feeling right now, I’m more motivated than I have ever been before. I‘m not afraid of moving to Canada or of the language barrier or that I’ll feel myself uncomfortable there. I hope my English is good enough and I’ll be able to communicate with people”

Google translation of the quote before the one translated above:
"Yes, now I will live and train in North America," said the sportswoman, "As for the [rumored] change of sports citizenship, it's absolute nonsense. All the normal and sane people understand this perfectly well that it does not concern me. I will live in Canada, I just have to change my place of residence for an indefinite period."

ETA: Love her "normal and sane people" comment!

Phil Hersh spoke to Brian Orser -- article was just published: http://www.icenetwork.com/news/2018/05/07/275657578
Excerpts:
But he never expected the April 2 text message from 2018 Olympic silver medalist and two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia.
"I was totally stunned," Orser said. <snip>
Orser met with Medvedeva, 18, and her mother, Zhanna Devyatova, on Sunday, April 22, at the Mayfield Hotel in Seoul. When the meeting ended, Orser realized what at first seemed unbelievable would soon become reality.
"She told me, 'I want to make a change,''' Orser said. "She didn't really give me any reasons why.
"I really had a lot of respect for her instantly because she told me, 'I don't want to say anything bad about my current coaching situation.'''
"The main thing is she needs to have a voice in her own skating," Orser said. "We have been discussing music, what direction we want to go -- she has never had that luxury before. She told me it was, 'This is what you're skating to. This is the order of your spins, these are your spin positions.'''
Medvedeva impressed upon Orser that she remains passionate about skating. She told him her goal is to win the Olympics.
"I said, 'Let's keep that in mind, but it doesn't mean you have to win every world championship on the way.' I think it is an important message for everyone to know that is what her goal is, and that is what we are going to aim for."
Orser said Medvedeva would work with him, Wilson and choreographer David Wilson, who has done Olympic gold-medal programs for Kim and Hanyu and world title-winning programs for Fernández.
"She is going to reinvent herself," Orser said of Medvedeva. "Even though she has some amazing titles, I feel they are the tip of the iceberg, that there is so much more she can do."
Will one of them be fixing the "flutz" -- the wrong edge takeoff on Medvedeva's triple lutz -- that has been a subject of controversy, since judges rarely call her on it?
"I'm going to do my best," Orser said, with a laugh. "I have been looking at it already. I'm not going try to disguise it or put it in a corner.
"That's not going to be an easy one, but I think she's open to this. She's open to the change."

I hope the coaching changes works out for her. I am not her biggest fan but my heart did break for her seeing her in tears in kiss and cry, skating her best, being overscored, and still losing to an underscored and virtually underaged Zagitova who is just the much better skater. Hopefully with the move to Orser she can improve her jumps and artistry to be able to compete with the likes of Zagitova and an improving Osmond.

Zag gambled on performing all her jumps in the 2nd half of the program if you're talking about the Olympics (DUH)! I always thought there was more of a chance of Med winning because there's no margin for error with that tactic! We saw what happened at Worlds a few weeks later; error made By Zag and there was nowhere for her to go and make it up! I hope coaches convince all the skaters; maybe get the judges to mandate having a more balanced program to eliminate that kind of nonsense! :drama: :kickass: :irina1: :sarah1: :shizuka1:

It was a big gamble but it payed off. Medvedeva should have upped her technical content, learning a triple lutz-triple loop combo, and putting more jumps in the 2nd half in the long. Even doing a triple lutz-triple toe and triple flip as her solo jump instead of a triple flip-triple toe and triple loop probably would have made up the point she lost by and given her the win. She thought playing it safe would get the job done, even knowing Alina was doing harder jumps, and lost. She basically repeated Michelle Kwan's mistake from 98 but atleast Kwan had a severe toe injury as an excuse as she would have atleast done the triple toe-triple toe otherwise, while Evgenia fully healthy did not up the ante and it cost her.

Who was healthy? Did you forget her foot injury!? She was not healthy leading up the Olympics. Who knows what technical content she would have presented had she not had that injury!

Russian article about her John Wilson Blades' video interview (linked in post #316): https://rsport.ria.ru/figure_skating/20180712/1139256085.html

Google translated excerpt:

"The training here is shorter in time, but the number of training sessions is longer." In Russia, I had two trainings a day and a half a day, now they are shorter in time, but there are more of them. And this is even more complicated than I thought. he always tries to make me calm," said Medvedeva in an interview published on the channel John Wilson Blades on YouTube.

Also, Medvedeva noted that the most surprising thing in Canada for her was that people in this country almost always smile.

"First of all, it's unusual for me that all people here almost always smile. When you meet someone, they will ask you:" How are you? How was your day? "At first I did not understand:" Why do you ask me this? "It's very unusual, but I think it's even better for morale, for training, it's much calmer here." That's good," said figure skater.

I really love her. Glad she seems to be enjoying Canada thus far.....Jason Brown posted this pic on Twitter today and it makes me happy to see her there amongst all of these strong skaters :)

I hate her new SP. It is not her at all. She is on the wrong path, it seems. It is disgraceful for her to lose to a second rate skater like Tennell. The RSF will make a note of that. It is going to get worse. May be Orser was not such a good choice after all.

If Medev is upset or unhappy she doesnt show it. I love how she went right to Bradie to congratulate her!!!

Medvedeva, who held a slim lead after the short program, also had a solid outing, landing six triple jumps in her free to a tango medley. But she fell on a triple loop and fumbled one of her three spins.

If she was disappointed, she certainly did not show it, running up to embrace and congratulate Tennell before warmly greeting reporters in the mixed zone.

“To be honest, I feel just amazing,” Medvedeva said. “This competition was really an incredible experience. First competition with my new team, new coaches, new everything.”

I just finished off a family bag of mini Snickers bars, myself.

Seriously? Please get a grip. And stop with the clueless dissing. Quite clearly Orser and Wilson are working with Janny Med on improving her jump technique and flow out, as well as her speed. I respect Janny's passion and competitive determination, as well as her courage in moving to Orser. While the judges have generally ignored Med's weaknesses and over-rewarded her strengths, that's the way it often goes in figure skating re rep and politics. At least these new programs aren't OTT WTF kitschy and lugubriously overdramatic as some of the programs Eteri & Co had Med skating to in the past.

I'll bet anything that Janny Med is going to continue to improve her already prodigious talents. She's got some weaknesses that she's obviously planning to shore up, or she wouldn't have left Eteri's camp. She's honest, forthright and she shows gracious sportsmanship. As Janny Med said, she's going back to the Cricket Club to continue working hard. These programs are a good, new start for Med, not overdone and well within her power to steadily improve. The judges obviously respect and favor Med. Orser and Wilson are no slouches when it comes to figure skating knowledge and coaching. And Janny Med herself has a backbone made of steel. Borrowing from Omarosa's recently apt comeback to Trevor Noah: Heck, "if you see Janny Med in a fight with a bear, pray for the bear." Cool that the same quip most definitely applies to stellarly improved and improving Bradie 'Tenacious' Tennell. The sport needs rivalries and exciting competitions, not same-old, same-old status quo pecking order judging.

If you like Janny Med, please relax and don't go on a blithering blinder. Stop panicking and contemplating jumping a freefall out the nearest window. Good grief! Figure skating is a competition, and it's great to see competitive grit and fortitude coming from a variety of quarters. Enjoy the journey and the process, cause nothing is actually written in stone. Nor should it be. That's why we watch.

Tee hee. I love Snickers, but I've had to swear off the chocolate candy. Darn it!

Also, btw, peanuts have lectins and ain't good for us generally. The best and healthiest nuts are: walnuts, macadamia (happily crazy-sounding) nuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans. But caution, definitely stay away from those fattening and non-healthy cashews! I used to love cashews, but sound dietary knowledge is a good and life-enhancing thing. :D
