Canadian Pairs 2017/2018 Season News and Updates

Good job and fight shown by Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro today in the FS (133.84 is a new ISU personal best for them!) to get Canada 2 pairs spots for next year's Worlds! And they will place in the top 6 overall, wow. :)

S/B are a good team that is lacking that something extra to make them great, IMO. I find many of S/B’s elements and skating to be small, in comparison to the top teams, and I think they lack a wow factor. Everything is good and competent, but not great. Their throws don’t seem to get a lot of distance. The twist, while competent, isn’t at Knierims, S/M or T/M level where it’s a highlight. Skating skills are good but not amazing. Everything is fine but nothing stands out. This is fine if you’re a junior team but you need something extra to make it to the top on seniors. They showed a lot of personality earlier in their careers but the programs this year are a miss, IMO. The salchow has always been somewhat inconsistent for them, and unfortunately, the pairs field is really deep right now and you can’t afford mistakes.

She does look to have gained weight (which is not to say she’s fat) and her face seems puffy in a way that seems to indicate some sort of steroid. I hope she’s okay. I’m not a big fan (yet) but they are both very talented.

I actually think S/Bs LP this year is pretty good. It's the SP that was a mistake. It's even worse with many mistakes. Too heavy. I also think Sequin needs more free leg/free foot stretch and I also wish she could hold her hands/fingers better. She has a tendency to stick her thumb out/upwards.

You don't even need me to start on I&M. But which team got to Worlds even without competing at Nationals? BOW based on a GP victory and a GPF qualification. Okay, better than Chartrand, at least. But if you are going to request a bye to Worlds and then not place well at Worlds, I won't have that much sympathy when posters use that very same injury as an excuse.
They didn't place badly at last year's Worlds, which is the one they got BOW'd to. They were 11th overall and in the top 10 in the LP, and if one wants to argue, I thought they were undermarked in the LP as well, since they were one of the only teams that had anything close to a clean skate. KMT & MM's ISU best total at that point was less than what S/B scored at 2017 Worlds, even if they were coming off a serious injury. SB's ISU best at that point was about ten points higher than MT/M's. Between all of that and the fact that they had made the GPF, won a GP event that season, and been very solidly Canada #2 at the previous year's Canadians, it was pretty much a no-brainer to send them to Worlds, IMO.

Heh... remember who placed 6th in pairs at Worlds last year?

Not saying it's not an awesome finish for them, and kudos for stepping in and saving our two spots, but... just saying. ;)

It seems like some people are writing off S/B because of one disastrous outing. It's not like it's indicative of their team. Fans are way too fickle sometimes.
They are an extremely talented team BUT inconsistency really plagues them. I wonder if it has anything to do with them being a couple on and off the ice. Maybe they need to stick to a business relationship only.

They aren’t an off ice couple.

Hopefully after today's result, the naysayers of the KMT/M pairing will give Marinaro a break. He would absolutely deserve it, in my very humble opinion.
Agreed. Let's hope that they work on some quad throws for next season.

I respect so many aspects of Meagan Duhamel's approach to pairs skating and what I know of her attitudes to life in general. Based on what I recall, Meagan was supportive of KMT after the break with Dylan and also she would appear to have supported their move to Richard and Bruno and I assume she would have to have been on board with it or it couldn't have happened. Pairs is a tough discipline and I think a good pairs community is beneficial to all. This Worlds KMT/MM pulled it off for the team. Another time - somebody else. I think it would be so much easier to have a tough skate if it all didn't rest on you.

Can you or someone, who is willing to talk about it, explain why the negativity (which i noticed for sometime) towards KMT/M? is it because KMT dropped Moskovitz?
They had some problems with lifts early on in their partnership, he was the weaker of the two skaters when it comes to side-by-side jumps, and he did not have a lot of success with his previous partner.

KMT is one of the best female pairs skaters in the world - jumps, spins, artistry.... She was also a decent singles skater....

Thank you! for some odd reason i thought i heard people unhappy about her break up with previous partner, or maybe it was Marinaro who left his partner. Glad to hear it is bout technical/skating issues.

No, people are mad about her breakup with Dylan. She left him because she wanted to complete until 2022 and possibly 2026 and he was much older than her. Before this season, people gloated that I/M were doing better than Kirsten was. Now she made the Olympics a cycle earlier than she predicted, and she was low-key right. Dylan's jumps went by the wayside even before that door fell on him.

Got it. i remember the gloating, except i picked up the part where some Canadians were happy to "get a Russian" who liked Canada better than Russia.... That did not work out too well.

It might have worked out better if a huge glass door had not fallen on Dylan while he was training a few weeks before Nationals in January. Among other things his hand was injured and needed several stitches, and I think he also got a concussion and other injuries. Had he been healthy I/M would have had as good a shot at being on the Oly team as S/B and KMT/M. People mostly seemed to think it would be KMT/M who would be left at home.

I've personally always preferred MT/M and I/M over S/B. I never really saw what everyone else sees in them.

Of the three teams, Kirsten is the best jumper by far. I've seen videos of her doing pretty much every triple jump, landed beautifully, and I usually find her and Michael to be overall more consistent than the others. I prefer the styling of I/M over MT/M, but as technical skaters, IMO, MT/M have them both beat.

KMT is pretty great. She’s always been really consistent and had cat like reflexes. I think she had gotten even better in the last year or so. I don’t think Marinaro is at her level, despite improving a lot, but he’s gotten a lot more consistent too. She’s definitely a great competitor and that goes a long way. 4th in the LP in this field is :kickass:
