Mirai Nagasu Cheer thread: Return to Olympus

Nothing is set in stone yet (eta: I assume the skaters competing in SD/SP already know). The team event deadlines are:

10 am Saturday Korea time - confirmation is due for the ladies & ice dance short program entries.
1:15 pm Sunday Korea time - confirmation for the pairs free skate.
3:30 pm Sunday Korea time - confirmation for the men's, ladies, and ice dance free skates.

NBC Olympics streamed the U.S. Ladies practice in the practice rink earlier today and Mirai two-footed her 3A and landed 3F+3T & 3Lo in her SP run through. Here's a clip of Mirai's best 3A attempt of the practice (that was shown), posted by @LKR in the Kiss & Cry section (thanks!):

Darn! I missed it! I should've checked NBC's Olympic site!

USA Today article focusing on Mirai and her dad -- and hinting that her competitive career ends with the Olympics (boo):

NBC Los Angeles picks Mirai as one of nine Team USA athletes to watch in Pyeongchang (but a Toyota ad covers part of their paragraph on her :( :

Whee! She's getting so much attention! Finally!

Sounds like just the writers opinion that it is the end of the road. I think Mirai will at least do one more season based on her own comments after the Japan Open.

I think Mirai might want to end her career at the 2020 worlds. I think a lot of skaters, especialy NA skaters, might make that a target to try/hope to end their career. I don't see her going for 2022, although crazier things have happened.

Here's a new Christine Brennan article on Mirai. It's interesting to me that Tom and her talked about learning the triple axel at her very first lesson with him. It's too bad that she hasn't really been hitting it in the practices (except that one), I wonder if the early morning schedule of the practices has something to do with it. But it sounds like the other jumps have been good, and I'm glad that she didn't let it affect her other jumps in her sp runthrough. The most important thing for Mirai is to stay healthy and not get too distracted by the triple axel, and she'll be fine. I think that she also answered "yes" in her Reddit Ask me Anything when someone asked if she plans to compete next season.

If Mirai hits 7 rotated triples plus 1 UR 3A in the LP, then I'm more than good.

Mirai is at the Olympics, so she should try to be Olympic. No use leaving something like that on the shelf.

I will be happy for her no matter what. Just thinking about her making it to Pyeongchang makes me smile. But I really want her to land a beauty of a 3A when it counts. I so hope she will get to do the team event both for the medal chance and for the warmup aspect. I think it would help her nerves --the only thing that's in her way. Go Mirai!!!

I think Mirai will get PCs boost in the individual event if she skated well in the team event.

@Spun Silver, you're jinxing or what? ;) We've been on a roller coaster for years. It'll hurt your health if you get very excited even before she skates!
I do not have your equable temperament, @rosewood dear. I have been excited since Christmas! But I plan to read a quiet book tonight and forget all about skating... at least as soon as I finish catching up on what I missed this afternoon.

I hope they decide soon. I wish the countries were forced to submit all their entries sooner, it would make things more interesting and also easier on the athletes rather than everyone hedging their bets to the last moment.

Was it different in Sochi? It seemed like we knew at the start of the team competition who would skate and who would not. Also all the top skaters participated in 2014. This time they are waiting till the last minute to announce their skaters.
