Glee actor Marc Salling has died

Wow. That's very sad, but considering his legal troubles maybe isn't surprising.

Isn't a prison term for child pornography essentially a death sentence?

He was a sick pervert! But I have to say he was great on glee! He was really my favorite. So sick pervert R.I.P.

Such criminals (at least child molesters) are called in some prison circles "Short Eyes" - the name of a play written years ago about such a criminal. I have no reason to believe that child pornography criminals would be treated any differently from those.

Do you mean time that he would need to serve? Or that he would be targeted in prison, so his life would be at stake? I've seen on TV shows that those who are imprisoned for sexual abuse crimes are targeted by other prisoners. I would think that those had committed crimes against children would be worse...but Salling didn't do that, right? He was in possession of child pornography, but did not assault anyone?

Just...ugh. :slinkaway

The later. I think his plea actually meant his time was fairly low.

He was in possession of child pornography, apparently much of which showed children being sexually abused. So he didn't actually DO that, but uh... It's a fine line, and I'd say I cannot think of many crimes worse.

By purchasing or trading in images, he contributed to the abuse of children. He apparently had 50,000 of them - that's FIFTY THOUSAND - of not just underage, but prepubescent children. Little kids.

No fine line as far as I'm concerned.

Apparently some kids as young as three. It's horrifying. I mean, it is sad the guy took his life, but that he got a plea that was going to limit his jail time to maybe 5 years- that's just ridiculous and had to have been because he was famous. (Because yeah, he was a good actor in glee, and seemed quite talent. But it doesn't mean he wasn't a horrible person.)

And I'd be willing to take back the fine line between abuse and contributing to abuse. It's about the tiniest line I can think of- either way it is horrific.

If anyone was thinking I was saying he was a good guy because he only had child pornography but never assaulted anybody...umm, I wasn't.

I wonder if any of his former Glee castmates will say anything about his death. I personally hope they avoid saying anything.

When it first was revealed that the police found thousands of images of child porn on Mark's computer a few years ago, a part of me did hope that he would somehow prove that he was innocent in some way. But I also hoped that if he actually was guilty, he would get punished to the fullest extent of the law. So when he did plead guilty a while back, I too was disappointed that he received a very lenient plea deal. And now he's managed to escape even that.

An unnatural death at a comparatively young age is worse than a prison sentence.

On the other hand, it appears that his victims may lose their right to restitution unless they sue his estate.

I think that's debatable but i can see where you're coming from. I honestly think that he should've gone to prison and then live with the shame of being a sex offender.

Either way, I agree that it's a shame what will happen to his victims in terms of their right to restitution. Sigh.

Crimes against children are regarded as the lowest of the low in prison. The population doesn't get into splitting hairs.

I think that's accurate. Since he died before sentencing, the conviction will be vacated. With the conviction vacated, the plea agreement has no meaning. Without the plea agreement...I think they have to sue his estate.

Anyway, not sure that he has much money left. Lawyers are very expensive, and he'd been finished with Glee for a while. That house in Sunland/Tujunga didn't look too wonderful, but maybe he didn't owe anything on it.

I do wish there seemed to be more effective rehab for those men (almost always men) who view child pornography. It is sick.

I don't blame any of his Glee castmates for expressing sorrow at his death. They knew him for the good parts in his life. What he did with child pornography was terrible, but you can still feel sad for him and, especially, for his family.
