I realized the other day that I never posted after I watched La La Land. Wouldn't have been a biggie if I had kept forgetting! I thought it started out strong, but as soon as the romance started to fall apart, so did the movie. They more Ryan and Emma lost interest in one another, the more I lost interest in the movie. Unfortunately that meant that two thirds of the movie was a downer. Plus I thought the conclusion of the movie was put together in a strange way and that really lost me. Why would someone make a movie with such two great actors in a romance and have them be unhappy for the majority of the movie? Weird choice to cast two such charismatic people into this type of story. Plus I thought there would be more music, or at least more varied musical choices. they seemed to use variations on three songs that repeated over and over. Then John Legend comes on the screen breathing life into the movie and Stone's character mocks his joyful song. So that sucked too. I think I'd like to see the studio's cut of this movie after they wrestled it away from the director and re-cut it into something enjoyable.

Then John Legend comes on the screen breathing life into the movie and Stone's character mocks his joyful song.

How exactly does she mock his "joyful" (not the adjective I'd have chosen, but okay) song? When she sees that Seb isn't enjoying playing it, she looks sad and leaves. But the only thing she ever says about the music itself, as I recall, is that she doesn't mind it but she knows it's not what he wants to play.

From what I remember, she said she liked Legend's music, but she knows it's not the music Ryan Gosling wants to do and he was sort of showing it in his performances that she attended.

I was the opposite and I liked La La Land after their first date (still love the Planetarium scene though the idea of it is so twee) as it stopped being cute/clever tried to delve into some real human emotion.

I mostly hate the movie for the reasons stated in the article yet I still can't help watching it whenever it's on TV. I think if the entire movie consisted of the Bill Nighy subplot, the John and Judy (porn standins) subplot, throw in a bit of Hugh Grant dancing and then him and his chauffeur singing and an emotional scene from Emma Thompson and it would be a good movie. Oh and maybe a tiny part of the scene where the American girls like Colin's accent (the part where they repeat bottle, then realize table is the same is cute...the part where they are inviting him over and saying they all sleep naked in the same bed is stupid). So basically I think there is a decent 20 minutes in there.

I loved Bill Nighy in 'Love Actually' - especially the scene when he comes home from Elton John's Christmas party to spend time with his "fat manager" (his words).
I also though Hugh Grant was hilarious, and a liked a lot of the other characters and romances/subplots. The porn stand-ins were particularly cute.

But I agree with you about the scene with the American girls, didn't care for it. And then was also a scene where the woman with a crush on Alan Rickman's character mopes around sadly in her lingerie. It went on far too long and could have been cut entirely, it served no purpose.

The Color of Freedom (also known as Goodbye Bafana) is a movie about James Gregory (played by Joseph Fiennes) who was a South African prison guard assigned to be Nelson Mandela's main guard. The movie begins when Gregory is assigned this position and ends about twenty years later when Mandela is freed from prison. Dennis Haysbert plays Mandela and he and Fiennes are great on screen together. Diane Kruger plays James Gregory's wife and although her role is small, she excels just as strongly as the two male leads. I thought the movie was well written, it has a 7.1 rating at imdb.com, which is good if a movie makes it into the 7's (out of 10) for a rating. No major award recognition for this though. Which is unfortunate because I'd say at least one of the three performances should have received some kind of acknowledgement.

From what I remember of that scene, is that this kickass song fills up the screen and the band is going crazy and the audience is ecstatic. Then we see Stone's mopey face in this major buzzkill moment. What makes it even worse is that Gosling's character is doing all this to please her. It's like he can't catch a break. She pressured him into this (or at the very least, implied this is the direction he should go) and then when he has done what she wanted...she's still not happy. The movie just became even more of a downer after that. :(

No, she never implied that was the direction he should go. He did it on his own because he was worried about being in a relationship when his finances were in such a dire state. But she always wanted him to pursue his own goal. That's one of the things I liked about the movie :) -- for all the fantasy sequences and magic moments, there was still a good bit of realism and complexity to the characters' dilemmas.

But you can see it all on his face too. That sort of wry, resigned look he throws her when he moves from the piano and fires up that electronic contraption -- he knows and she knows and we know that this moment is anything but kickass or ecstatic for him, and that's what she reflects back to him. The movie never comes out and says that this music is wrong or bad, just that it's not where his heart and soul are, so he's selling out when he participates.

I felt the same way about it and I could relate to some of the issues around two people each pursuing their own career sometimes means it's hard for them to be together.

I found it amusing that the second time I watched was with my significant other and
he was disappointed that Stone and Gosling's characters didn't end up together. I found it a bit interesting that he felt that way, because in the story of my life, I've been in that situation and had the relationship end, which means he's the other guy who Stone ends up with at the end (making me Emma Stone of course )

Are y'all interested in dramas about dance as well as documentaries about dance? I do have to note that this drama's trailer didn't really include any dancing of note. I'm assuming the movie itself has some dancing in it, but I'm unsure whether they even have any full routines in it or not.

I've seen Lady Bird twice so far & it's high on my list this year so I'm glad to see it getting so many awards. I really liked Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project, but the movie is a lot different than I expected. Overall it is extremely dark with a few seconds of brightness here & there. I thought it would be the reverse - something more uplifting like the movie In America. Dafoe's role as the motel manager who wants to help the young girl but can't quite ever get it right is the character I liked best in the film.

This Beautiful Fantastic with Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil from Downton Abbey) & Tom Wilkinson is beautifully filmed with some quirky but interesting characters. An introverted young librarian has to tend to her overgrown garden if she doesn't want to be evicted by the landlord. The elderly curmudgeon next door who cultivates perfect plants begrudgingly offers assistance, resulting in a whimsical & often witty tale about friendship.

@PeterG, I watch both dance documentaries & dramas. The same for films about art. I like the movies like Mao's Last Dancer & Renoir the best, but also see the ones like Center Stage & Art School Confidential. Thanks for keeping us up to date with the listings of the new movies so we can find them all.

An article about how CGI is used in films these days (don't let the creepy article title skare you off)
https://www.theguardian.com/film/20...mmers-crotch-is-movie-cgi-getting-out-of-hand

This part I found interesting to hear about:

“Simple but high quality digital visual effects are now at price point where low budget movies can afford them. We change the time, on clocks, on wristwatches. We grade day for night. We fix cloud continuity in the sky. We make summer shoots look autumnal and we add snow and rain when called for,” says Ben Robards, a creative partner at Absolute Post. “If your 80s movie isn’t convincingly period, we can liberally sprinkle Rubik’s Cubes and Walkmans around; if your Jane Austen adaptation has electricity pylons and hybrid cars in shot, we can remove them.”

Unsure why the article needed to focus on genitalia more than once... :shuffle:

I'm wondering how Wonder Wheel will do. Just from the buzz I'm hearing, it seems a lot of people aren't in the mood for Woody Allen these days.

I wondered about this too. Thought maybe they should postpone it...at the very lest until the spring when hopefully we're not having daily updates about harassment in the world of entertainment (and beyond). I'm also wondering if people will shy away from making films with people like Woody Allen or others who have had rumours about their behaviour - that's yet to be uncovered.

Tonight I watched the documentary Magician: The Astonshing Life and Work of Orson Welles. I wouldn't say I'm a Welles fan, but I saw the trailer for this and it looked so good that I had to find a copy to watch. It was as good as I had hoped it would be. Very well made documentary, which (thankfully) focusses on his career in all it's stages. I saw thankfully because I don't really enjoy when they go too much into someone's private life at the expense of covering important parts of the person's career. This documentary does touch a bit of his personal life, which was equally interesting. But the vast majority of it is on his work, both in theatre, film and radio, separated into various stages of his career. Two of the things that I found most interesting about this movie was the amount of unfinished movies Welles never completed. I believe about six different films are mentioned, with short clips from each shown. I checked Wikipedia and it highlights three unfinished movies (one which Netflix has purchased and is working on right now to complete). Wikipedia also lists about 24 other projects which are either unfinished movies or unfinished screenplays. The second really interesting thing covered here is connected to what I've just mentioned in that Welles seems to have started on a passion project, jumping into it without budgeting the movie, or at least not ensuring there was enough of a budget to finish the movie. So he would work on a movie and then production was stalled when he had no more money. Then he'd have to search out acting gigs to make money and then start up the production again. I wonder if he loved the initial passion of a project and then as his perfectionist streak started to hit, it caused him to lose interest, maybe thinking he couldn't make things as great as his imagination had created. Very fascinating man and movie about the man. Totally recommended, even if you're not really a Welles fan like me, but simply a lover of movies and the whole process of creating art.

Saw Lady Bird today. Liked, but didn't love it. Saoirse Ronan is very good of course, and other characters did a good job of supporting her. As a movie it felt flat to me. Problems of growing up, teenagers, high school kids, is nothing new. It is described as a comedy, so it will get the Golden Globes in that category. Oscar loves these types of movies, so a best picture and best director nominations will be there, come Oscar time. Ronan is a certain best lead actress nom, and Laurie Metcalf in the supporting actress role is a near certainty. To me the whole mother daughter drama seemed contrived.

To me it was just 7/10. Imdb is showing 8.5, which surprised me.

The theatre was nearly empty, with just two other persons in it. I am sure on weekend it will be full because of all the attention it is getting.

If you want to see an AMAZING movie, then check out The Girl With All The Gifts. It is phenomenal. It was released in a lot of countries in 2016, but not until February of this year in North America. So it could be considered for this year's awards, but I've seen no mention of it. Which is a shame because both the story and the direction are brilliant. And the cast is so good! It's tough to choose one performance as the best, but Sennia Nanua as "the girl" (Melanie) has to carry the movie, so she deserves the first mention. But Glenn Close as the scientist who is responsible for finding a cure for the virus that is turning humans into feral beings is good (as expected) and Gemma Arterton as Melanie's main teacher is very strong as well. The story has a haunting quality to it as a military compound and laboratory are over-run by infected humans and a small group of those able to escape then try to find their way to another base where they will be safe. What's haunting about the movie is something I can't specifically mention as it would give away an important part of the story, but I struggled with the ending for a bit, not liking it. But with time I've settled into what happens. And it's a brilliant ending probably, whereas lots of movies I find have endings which are somewhat weak in comparison to the rest of that movie. So my final thought on this movie is: Oscar-worthy.

I saw ‘Three Billboards outside Ebbing, MO’
I enjoyed it, some moments that just made me laugh out loud. Great performances, Frances McDormand is always amazing, Sam Rockwell was hysterical, almost but notover the top. Lucas Hedges is a good young actor. Woody Harrelson was great in a subtle performance. He is good good in so many types of roles. TThe story line was interesting, i like the way things unfolded, peeling layers away as you learn more and more about several characters. I ciukd seenit being nominated in acting categories.

Imo, Gemma Jones and Ian Hart are the backbone of God's Own Country and give the film the local context it needed to be effective. Great casting of the supporting roles (and should be recoginzed).

What's interesting about the film's timing of when it was produced vs. when it was released is that the director/writer could have provided even more of a "Brexit" dimension to the story if they wanted.

I found "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" to be the type of kids movie that works well for all ages. Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell play the parents of Alexander, who has had such a bad day that his birthday wish is for everyone else in his family to have as bad a day as he has just had. But soon after the next day begins, he wishes he had chosen a different birthday wish. Things go from bad to worse, but the tone of the movie is kept light, so things don't become bogged down regardless of what is about to happen to the family next. I recommend this one for everybody who wants some light and fun entertainment. Dylan Minnette from 13 Reasons Why plays Alexander's older brother.

Saw Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri today. Had mixed feelings about it. It kept me glued to the seat, anxious to see what happens next. I waited to get an answer but didn't really get one. I hate movies that don't really end. We do see a change in character. I don't know if that was the purpose of the movie.

On the plus side, the acting was great by Frances McDormand and her supporting cast. Definitely a SAG award nominee, and a best lead actress Oscar nomination for Frances. Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Lucas Hedges were all very good. John Hawke had just a small role.

Some things really bothered me. Someone beats up another person, or commits a crime, like arson, but there are no charges filed or a punishment. Sometimes no investigation (that fits what the main character is angry about). The main character tries to control a big fire with a regular fire extinguisher and escapes with only a few minor burns. Attacks her dentist but no charges are filed. The list goes on and on.

This movie is getting rave reviews as a dark comedy. I agree with the description and I admit that it was entertaining and well acted. The violence was a bit too much for me, but. I would have forgiven it had the other things not been so bothersome.

Would I recommend this to others? May be, because I know some people really thought it was a great movie. I was a little disappointed but wouldn't say it is a bad movie. From the trailer I had expected a better one though.
