Q & A WITH PATRICK CHAN
4:43 | October 26, 2017
Patrick Chan will attempt to win his 10th Canadian titlein October at Skate Canada[at the 2018 Canadian Championships in Vancouver]. Earlier this year, Sportsnet’s Donnovan Bennett joined him for a Q&A prior to throwing out the first pitch at a Toronto Blue Jays game.
Patrick has indicated that he doesn't care about medals, and he is at a long shot for the 2018 Olympic podium due to the lack of quads. At present it looks Chen, Hanyu, Fernadez, and Uno are the primary podium contenders.
Patrick doesn't have a "lack of quads," and he really doesn't need to look any farther than Javi to see that you don't need a quad lutz/loop/flip to win. Javi doesn't have any more quads than Patrick and has already defeated Hanyu at Autumn Classic and Shoma and Nathan at Japan Open this season.
There's so much inherent risk to doing a 4, 5, 6-quad program and you never know what could happen at the Olympics or any other competition.
Yes, I think Patrick only managed to get one clean 4S last season. That he managed to do that was wonderful and it is such a crying shame that instead of an attempt to maintain that, he has decided to scale back. It seemed a decent strategy at first. Clearly, the strategy did not work at Skate Canada but I am going to reserve full opinion until NHK.I agree, but the difference is Javi lands the quads he does know. Patrick doesn't.
Lol, goodness what a POOR memory I have! Thanks so much for the correction and further details. He landed 4 of 7 attempts on the 4S last season, and the successful ones all came later in the season with the exception of 4CC. He fell at his first two outings on the GP, landed it at GPF and Nationals, fell at 4CC, and landed at Worlds and WTT.
This site shows the ISU competitions starting from last season and broken down by element. This doesn't include Nationals or WTT, where he cleanly landed it in the FS at both competitions.

I don't remember if he did any local competitions last season, but he did one in Michigan about a month or two ago and did a 4S (albeit slightly over-rotated/didn't check the landing) plus 4T-3T in the short there.
That's 5 of 8, which is more successful attempts than not.
Thank you for sharing this. <3Since this is Patrick's cheer thread, here is a social media post by Han Yan about Patrick after Skate Canada, translated by the Twitter user: https://twitter.com/wereoldmen/status/925198311040065537
"Figure skating is different from other sports, some athletes will think figure skating is purely athletic and that there will always be someone better. But some skaters will be remembered in people's hearts, skating with their entire soul, making other skaters think that they could never be like them. I believe that this is what makes a successful figure skater. No matter what "Old Chan" does or places, in my heart he will forever be the best figure skater and my goal."
Btw, using "old" in this case doesn't literally mean old. It's very common to call someone old with their last name in Chinese, sometimes to differentiate between people with the same last name and can be seen as a sign of respect.
What a Beautiful post by Han Yan. I totally agree.Since this is Patrick's cheer thread, here is a social media post by Han Yan about Patrick after Skate Canada, translated by the Twitter user: https://twitter.com/wereoldmen/status/925198311040065537
