Chantastic....the return of Patrick

I think most people know when someone isn't being positive. There is a diff between hoping someone bounces back and saying someone is weak esp in a cheer thread

Patrick has indicated that he doesn't care about medals, and he is at a long shot for the 2018 Olympic podium due to the lack of quads. At present it looks Chen, Hanyu, Fernadez, and Uno are the primary podium contenders.

Patrick doesn't have a "lack of quads," and he really doesn't need to look any farther than Javi to see that you don't need a quad lutz/loop/flip to win. Javi doesn't have any more quads than Patrick and has already defeated Hanyu at Autumn Classic and Shoma and Nathan at Japan Open this season.

There's so much inherent risk to doing a 4, 5, 6-quad program and you never know what could happen at the Olympics or any other competition.

I agree, but the difference is Javi lands the quads he does know. Patrick doesn't.

Yes, I think Patrick only managed to get one clean 4S last season. That he managed to do that was wonderful and it is such a crying shame that instead of an attempt to maintain that, he has decided to scale back. It seemed a decent strategy at first. Clearly, the strategy did not work at Skate Canada but I am going to reserve full opinion until NHK.

He landed 4 of 7 attempts on the 4S last season, and the successful ones all came later in the season with the exception of 4CC. He fell at his first two outings on the GP, landed it at GPF and Nationals, fell at 4CC, and landed at Worlds and WTT.

This site shows the ISU competitions starting from last season and broken down by element. This doesn't include Nationals or WTT, where he cleanly landed it in the FS at both competitions.

I don't remember if he did any local competitions last season, but he did one in Michigan about a month or two ago and did a 4S (albeit slightly over-rotated/didn't check the landing) plus 4T-3T in the short there.

That's 5 of 8, which is more successful attempts than not.

Since this is Patrick's cheer thread, here is a social media post by Han Yan about Patrick after Skate Canada, translated by the Twitter user: https://twitter.com/wereoldmen/status/925198311040065537

"Figure skating is different from other sports, some athletes will think figure skating is purely athletic and that there will always be someone better. But some skaters will be remembered in people's hearts, skating with their entire soul, making other skaters think that they could never be like them. I believe that this is what makes a successful figure skater. No matter what "Old Chan" does or places, in my heart he will forever be the best figure skater and my goal."

Btw, using "old" in this case doesn't literally mean old. It's very common to call someone old with their last name in Chinese, sometimes to differentiate between people with the same last name and can be seen as a sign of respect.

Lol, goodness what a POOR memory I have! Thanks so much for the correction and further details.

What a Beautiful post by Han Yan. I totally agree.
At SK what disappointed me is that he didnt skate with his whole soul. But, when he does ....the jumps are irrelevant...his skating is pure music ...enchanting, exquisite...takes me to another realm.

I'm disappointed that he withdrew. Unless he is hiding some kind of physical illness or injury, I think the best thing psychologically for him would've been to get back on competition ice ASAP, regardless of the outcome. With Canadians as now his only competition before the Olympics, he won't really get to compete under pressure - he has absolutely no competition nationally and Skate Canada would send him to Olys even if he fell on every jump he tried at Canadians and placed fifth (heaven forbid).

I find the news of his withdrawal from NHK concerning. I agree that it's going to be tough to compete under pressure without another international competition. However there's nothing I can do but hope that the Skate Canada spin is true and he is going to come back ready to compete at Nationals and Olympics.

Patrick has always said he does not like competing in Asia and does not do well with jet lag so giving up NHK is not a big deal. I know the Olympics are in Asia, but there is more time to get used to the time difference. I think this is what he needs and I'm sure he will show up later in the season with a different mind set. Competing in the team competition takes some of the pressure off him as he will be with friends :) He will be fine as the Olympics are a much more important goal than individual competitions :)

Maybe you are right, missing this trip to Japan could be good for him. One less trip to Asia this year, more time to concentrate on training. My fingers are crossed.

Skipping the GP a good idea so he can focus and fix his mistakes for the nationals and Olys. Suggest he pick his 2 favorite SP and Lp of all time and do them

I would love him to pick Tango de Exilados. The blade work is wonderful.

Not sure about which long I would like. Maybe Aranjuez as it never reached its full potential.

Looking at Pat's ISU statistics page, it is clear he has the goods to be competitive with the best skaters in the world, and potentially make the Olympic podium when everything slots into place.

The Olympic podium may very well come down to who gives the cleanest pair of skates in both parts of the event.
