Hurricane Irma

I have friends with a small vacation bungalow on Sanibel Island. It is a concrete block construction home with tile floors, and that is about all I expect will be left after the surge hits. Fortunately, they live in Ohio and are not in harm's way.

The reporters have all said that they go outside so that the "curious average person" will be less tempted/likely to do so.
Many arrests have been made for curfew violations.

Also because officials don't want people who evacuated to return early. I think the media deserve some credit for doing their best to inform the public. Unfortunately people are stubborn - it seems they don't believe it unless they see it.

In Hollywood, FL, the city allowed residents to park/store their cars in the big city garages for free so that they are not sitting outside during Irma. An unidentified car dealership took advantage of the offer and stored their (stickered, with no license plates) cars for sale, using up a number of the designated parking spots. Imagine the frustration of residents who could not find a parking space.

I thought that they are reporting that the roads in and out are closed to keep people off of them.

I heard one of the media say this yesterday when they were still worried about folks returning but I'm sure you are right it would make sense that they've closed the roads now.

Miami's looked horrible as is - I couldn't fathom a direct cat 5 hit. :scream: But Fort Myers, Naples etc. still have the worse to come. :(

This hurricane has been a crash course on Florida geography for me. :slinkaway

I mentioned in one of my first posts in the thread that we had a small storm in Miami about theee weeks ago and EVERYTHING was flooded. Streets were not accessible, my lobby of my high rise was flooded, the elevators were out, the gym was closed for a few days, the people who had cars in the parking garage had them stuck there because it was getting flooded and they had to put up a gate, etc. And the storm wasn't huge by any means. Miami Beach would have been completely destroyed if Irma hit anywhere near where they originally planned.

Yeah the flooding in Miami is surprising considering they are 90 miles from the eye but it is getting the eastern side feeder bands and surge, which tend to be stronger.

Feel for the people who decided to ride it out in the Naples area. At least Irma is coming ashore in daylight.

Our friends stuck in St Thomas are now in trouble, as he is out of his heart medicine. :(

Thanks for the link. I see he's originally from Canada (a fellow Albertan) who likely has dual citizenship. Has anyone tried contacting the Canadian Govt to see if they can help? He's also a former NHL Player - played for the Calgary Flames. Maybe contact the Flames and the NHL Players Assn - see if they can help put some pressure on the Govt.

It's amazing to see these areas where the ocean has been sucked away from the shore. I don't remember this being an issue before. Is this common? This storm really is amazing and fascinating and scary...all at the same time.

Same guy is on CNN too. I was just thinking the same thing.
At least the Canadian channel I was watching seemed to be getting feeds from CNN reporters, instead of sending additional people out in harm's way. I've been watching the coverage off and on all day, and thinking how crazy that they still have reporters out in some of the conditions they are showing.

I'm streaming TWC and agree the guy in Naples is  I can't believe the trees are still mostly standing!

They just said on CNN that the most damage occurs after the eye has passed because the wind is suddenly blowing from the other direction and trees get bent the other way.

Some people are awful.

Other people are just awfully stupid and probably believe that the dog will be there waiting for them once Irma passes. Never underestimate human stupidity.

If there is any justice they won't be reunited with them, even if they are chipped and the info is UTD. That is just so irresponsible.

There's been a guy on the Weather Channel standing on the street for a good 10 minutes and he's right in the middle of the eye in Naples. Ridiculous.

On MSNBC, they are alternating between crazy guys in various Naples locations. They say that they have chosen safer specific locations. But one guy did get hit in the head with something and took a couple of minutes off. And at least they've been telling the producers to take cover. But I can't imagine that this is actually safe for the reporters. They just lost communication with one of the guys. That's the wind, but there also are water issues. Water levels rose three feet in 18 minutes in Naples.

Conditions are rather "dicey" at my home right now; although power is still on!
I'm glad I left.

Tammy and family are with her mother; not far from where I live.

CNN downgraded storm to category 2 but still emphasizes it is a dangerous storm.
