Just saw Dunkirk in IMAX. Very impressive. It's a 10! Very intense. Amazing cinematography and great music. Mark Rylance is one of my favorite character actors. He got plenty of screen time in this. This should get many Oscar nominations. I think the big screen made it even more 'real'- for lack of a better word. I don't think IMAX is the right format for every movie, but it was perfect for this.

They showed some trailers. 'Starwars' was a pleasant surprise but too short. I want to see more. Can't wait to see the movie.

I like Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford but from the trailer that movie Blade runner seems really awful, or not my type.

I had seen the trailer of Kingsman during another movie and that's not my type either. I do want to see Murder on the Orient Exp. I assume it's a remake. I never saw the old one.

I didn't comment on the Quentin Tarantino discussion because I needed time to look over his resume at imdb.com. My favourites of his would be Resevoir Dogs, then the two Kill Bill movies. I'm sure Jackie Brown would be my third favourite, but it's been so long since I saw it that I can't remember much of it. The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained wasn't bad. I wouldn't mind seeing any of these movies again, but at the same time I wouldn't say Tarantino was one of my favourite directors. Over-the-top is great when you pick your moments. But when that's always the same tone you go with, you end up being that guy over there who everyone keeps looking at because he is ALWAYS TALKING TOO LOUD.

I saw the trailer of 'It' last week when I went to see Baby Driver. I had to close my eyes during the trailer- too scary- so I definitely won't see that movie.

I do have a question about Baby Driver. What did Doc have on Baby that Baby has to sort of pay back that 'loan' to Doc by driving those crooks after their heists? Did the movie disclose the specifics at some point but I somehow missed it?

I saw Atomic Blonde the other night (with my free movie club ticket). It was okay. I did like the 80s soundtrack, even though it was a bit random in regards to the selections. I think it was really well edited though as the main fight scene looked as if it was done in one take. Charlize does kick ar$e really well.

Next week at my cinema they are having a screening of The Fifth Element to celebrate it's 20th anniversary. Planning on going to see that one with friends. Should be great on the big screen as I have only seen it on TV. But it is good that my cinema does have screenings of older films.

I saw Rough Night at one of the cheap movie theatres a little while ago. Was much better than I expected. Even though Scarlett Johansson is the main star, it's more a showpiece for Kate McKinnon and Jillian Bell, who are both hilarious. Johansson is good, but doesn't have the comedic chops of these other two ladies. And her role doesn't expect her to. But it is a nice switch-up from her dramatic roles and superhero roles. Would be nice to see Johansson in a light, sweet romantic comedy sometime soon. Anyway, Rough Night has a great story (in spite of the...umm...unfortunate happening...) and the pace is perfect with lots of great performances and just enough laughs. Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Demi Moore as the swingers next-door are fantastic and I'd love to see them get their own movie! For some reason Rough Night did not do well at the box office. I would have thought everyone who made Bridesmaids a hit would have gone to see this. Which made me think we'd see an even bigger bomb from...

The box office is very interesting this weekend. First Dunkirk is doing very well and is expected to make about $51m this weekend with Girls Trip second with an expected take of $28m...

...for me the biggest surprise is Girl's Trip because I have not even heard of this movie before it opened this week and have not seen a trailer either. So with an estimated earnings this weekend of $28m it has made back it's budget already.

...Girls Trip, which has now made 51 million and hasn't even seen a release outside of North America. Although movies with a predominantly black cast don't see much box office internationally. Some don't even get released outside of North America. I can't imagine Girls Trip is a better movie than Rough Night, but I'm only thinking that based on the trailer. But it looks like if there's a sequel to either of these movies, then Girls Trip 2 is what we'll be seeing in the marquee in a year or two.

It show the events from 3 perspectives and how the characters react to their circumstances and what they do. Some of the story line on the boat is a little more 'scripted'. All the acting was good. Kenneth Branagh, whom I have always loved, has one scene when he is holding binoculars to his eyes and you can only see his mouth - but you know what is going on in his mind.
I liked the end as it showed the 2 overall outcomes for the folks that survive.
The craft side of the movie is very impressive and well done.

That scene with K. Branagh was memorable, along with many others. So far the best movie I have seen this year.

S. Darko is a sequel (of sorts) to Donnie Darko. But I'm not sure if the makers of the first one were involved with this one. It's as strange as the first one, an interesting strange. I saw it when i was in Phoenox, so the desert location stood out to me. The performances were good, Ed Westwick from Gossip Girl is the most famous person in this. Watched the movie Frida on DVD last night. I had seen it in a theatre when it came out, but I remembered nothing, except for Salma Hayek's eyebrows. So it was like seeing it for the first time. Hayek was great as Frida Kahlo (Oscar nominated). Alfred Molina was good as Diego Rivera. Overall it was a good depiction of her painful life and their painful marriage, which was destroyed by their individual infidelity. Frida being bisexual made it even more complicated. I wish they had shown more of her paintings in the movie. She also had some political drawings which would have been worth showing.

The reason I put this DVD at the top of my Netflix list was that last weekend I saw an exhibit of paintings by Frida Kahlo and Diego Garcia, at a local museum. I liked many of the paintings and relearned their life story from the Docent and other members of our small group. So many great artists had such unhappy lives but they put their pain on the canvass and created masterpieces.

I watched Eddie The Eagle last night. Loved it. A definite feel-good movie. Made me tear up a few times. Great performances from Taron Egerton (Kingsman, Testament of Youth) and Hugh Jackman. And I really liked Jo Hartley as Eddie's Mom. Some might find this movie a bit corny, Egerton's performance as well, but I suggest you allow yourself some hokey-ness for a little while and just let this one melt your heart a little bit. Plus Hugh Jackman looks really good in this.

Shelter is a 2007 gay romantic drama where the two men don't end up dead or alone. Shocking! This is another movie that has been on my To See list for a long time. And it was definitely worth the wait. The performances are amongst the best I've ever seen in a gay film. I definitely recommend this one. I see from imdb.com that the two leads are no longer acting. A true loss. One is Brad Rowe, who I remember thinking might end up taking a lot of Brad Port's roles. Looks like he didn't even get his leftovers. Another person of note in the cast is Tina Holmes, who is someone who has been in a ton of stuff, someone you'd recognize if you saw her face. Luckily she's still acting. It's been on my Netflix queue for quite sometime. After reading your post I moved it to the top. So it will be the next movie I receive. I still have to see Sophie Scholl which is already in my home.

This afternoon I watched Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of which I expected to be background entertainment while I played Bewelled. But it ended up being much better than I expected. The guys in the band are shown creating a new album and also going back to where they grew up and sharing what their early lives were like. They were much more forthcoming than I expected and during at least two hometown visits, I was grabbing Kleenex after Kleenex. (Dare you not to cry as well if you decide to watch this one.). The music for their album sounded much better than I expected, more personal and more acoustic than any of their other stuff. But that was during the creation of the songs, so maybe after they were in the studio and the producers added everything they wanted, the songs ended up sounding more like their other work. I'll have to listen to the song samples for the album at amazon. Anyway, if you're a fan of the Backstreet Boys in any way, I definitely think you should see this one.
