2017-2018 Program Music and Choreographers

I'm angling for the former.
Nichol will be able to give Gracie another high-gloss coat of paint and you can point at and appreciate.
Alternatively, Zueva, if she chooses to, will rip Gracie's heart out and toss it into the audience.

No contest.

Lori Nichol does beautiful work when she's not limited by Frank's "Skating's Greatest Hits" songbook. Her programs for Sui/Han this season were exceptional. I hope Gracie is able to skate to music that SHE chooses and loves.

Fair point.
Hard to say how much influence Frank had over the choices and to what extent Lori was reigned in.
I compare this situation to Gabby. I wouldn't give her programs a 10/10 as already mentioned but obviously they have contributed to her getting where she is.

There is an authentic self inside of both Gabby and Gracie that could be tapped into. Maybe a bigger risk but also something that could intensify their appeal by bringing the audience including judges closer to them. Right now there's a bit of a wall that I'd like to see come down.
Marina is a perfectly capable elite choreographer so I'm not sure why she would call in Lori or if she has done so in the past. Maybe.

As curious as everyone else to see how this plays out.

There's a report from Twitter (via a Chinese news source) that Peng/Jin will have 2 new programs next season. (Originally, we heard they would be keeping their LP, but I guess that changed.)

Peng/Jin SP: Tango
Peng/Jin LP: Butterfly Lovers
Choreographer for both programs: Lori Nichol

I'm now quite excited. I still remember Lu Chen's beautiful Butterfly Lovers program from Nagano. If Peng/Jin can capture a little of that magic ... could be good!!

Not a SP, but (re-posting from the U.S. Pairs thread):

Erika Smith/AJ Reiss are keeping their short program to "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John and Julie Marcotte is choreographing their new FS to Beauty and the Beast, which will include the song "Evermore."

YES! Hopefully they'll make it onto my TV at some point, or their program will pop up on YouTube.

Pang & Tong also had a lovely Butterfly Lovers.

Latin rhythms with the Rhumba pattern but the pattern doesn't have to be set to specific Rhumba music, just needs to follow the bpm requirements.

seriously Babs??? :blah:
I love Muse and I love figure skating, but the combination, nononono.
Is there no other modern music out there? we have still britney for gods sake!

LOL. I agree.

Ugg this piece of music is on the fast track to becoming a modern day War Horse. meh....

and @clairecloutier I agree.. they usually do interesting things so I hope the choreography goes all out.

Lori definitely does do good and more BROADER work when not with Frank.

That being said, the only one of Frank's "Skating's Greatest Hits" that ever fell flat for me was Scheherazade for Kwan* during the 2001-02 season, although at the time I loved Michelle Kwan so it didn't matter (even if the program is empty, empty, empty . . . but then the competition was Irina's Tosca/Samson and Delilah mashup) . . . :D

Frank tended to dress up warhorses well enough with program content that the audience got everything they expected from a skater, which was very satisfying. For example, I really liked Gracie's Firebird, although it had been done ad nauseam as a music selection.

I think everybody can agree that Frank and Lori did their best work as partners when the music was unusual but not unheard of, like Kwan's Salome, or innovative but accessible like Ten's The Artist.

* Too bad Scheherazade became the template for every competitive LP Kwan did thereafter . . . But I still loved her :D

What is the SD rhythm for next season?
Any number of Cha Cha, Rhumba, Samba, Mambo, Meringue, Salsa, Bachata and any closely related Latin American Rhythms. For seniors, the pattern (Rhumba) can be skated to any of these rhythms, but the partial step sequence must be to a different rhythm.

:coffee: I wish I liked the music from La La Land. I've tried to like it, but I've found that it's virtually impossible to find a redeeming quality. It would've been fantastic on Sonja Henie in one of her big theatre productions of the 1930's, so there's that at least.

I'm over Exogenesis and I think "Chaplin" by Dean for the Knierims could end up being an unexpected YAY.

There's already so much info this off season :watch:

But Schez wasn't Lori and maybe not even Frank's choice. Kwan worked with Sarah Kawahara.

I think these sound like great choices for the leftovers! I seriously have so much hope for them now after they slayed at 4CC! They were just so gorgeous there :swoon: And now that China has 3 spots again they are likely to make it to the Olympics. Truth be told, I like them better than Yu/Zhang. I mean, Yu is utterly fabulous but until she can drag Zhang into ballet class with her and teach him how to do a proper camel spin, their partnership will continue to be lopsided to me...
