Davis and White #36: What a Wonderful World

Comments on NHK and dance threads and on SM (I don't read the VM thread, either).

Clearly this has not been my most successful joke. :slinkaway
Yeah, I've seen those comments and was surprised. Even Morozov threw some shade recently in an interview and people were loving that comment. Can someone please explain the D/W hate? Apparently I've been living under a rock because I didn't realize so many people disliked them until recently. I've always loved them and V/M equally for what they bring to the sport, and assumed the majority of ice dance fans felt the same....

Yes, I guess I have as well.

What I can comment on, is that Davis & White are good people. They are kind, generous and humble, everything that you look to, and for, in athletes.

Did anybody watch PJ Kwong's podcast for NHK? Kurt said he'd ask Meryl and Charlie if they were coming back while he's with them for the Holiday Festival on Ice shows. Implying that he would come back and spill the beans:sekret:

I'm cracking up thinking about the loops and hoops answer they'll give him. Good Ole Meryl and Charlie. When it comes to advertising they're about as subtle as a bull in a china shop but when it comes to something they don't want to be blunt about they can play coy with the best of 'em:watch:

I wish I could remember which one it was, but in a recent (spoken - so podcast or TSL) interview with V&M they said they've tried to convince D&W to come back but they're having none of it.

Meryl and Charlie are skating live to the Goo Goo Doll's "Iris" for Shall We Dance on Ice:swoon:. I feel so spoiled as a fan.

When will this be on tv in US?

Feb 11. The live performance to Iris was AMAZING. The band sounded so good and Meryl and Charlie had a long instrumental part along with part of the second verse I think (Anna and Dmitry danced to the first verse). My eye really went to Charlie in this program and his unabandoned movement.

Ain't No Sunshine was also great. And they were so fun in the disco number too!

Thanks! I set my dvr to record figure skating but it never recognizes show skating.

So excited to see this! I was watching Eleanor Rigby at 08 Nationals yesterday and while it was rare even then, I just don't see that kind of movement in ice dance anymore. The sense of abandonment and urgency. I miss it.

Flashback... Look at this from 2007 Worlds when Meryl and Charlie were new on the senior scene: :)

Thank you for posting these, @aftershocks! I hadn't seen these dances in awhile and it was fun to watch them again. That FD is one of my all -time favorites and they skated the heck out of it at this competition. I can't help but wonder what Marina and Igor would be producing for teams today had their partnership remained intact.

Fun to take a trip down memory lane! I was listening to the British Eurosport guys talking about them during the CD vid...they were wondering if Meryl and Charlie would be the answer to strengthening US Ice Dance! Boy, were they ever. All these years later and they are the greatest ever US Ice Dance team and I believe they are the reason that US ice dance is so deep, filled with team after team of excellence. I have followed US ice dance for many years (all the way back to the 80s) and never did I dream there would be so many great teams to watch and cheer for. Back then we had our champions but usually the number 2 team was buried in the world standings. It's still a shame that ice dance is as someone said on the forum the "Rodney Dangerfield of skating", it's certainly more popular than it ever was and we have Meryl and Charlie to thank for that, I believe. World Champions, Olympic Gold Medalists...so many medals, so much success. I was watching them back at 2007 Worlds, already liking them, never dreaming they would achieve what they did. It's not that I think they didn't have the drive, the desire, it's just that in retrospect, I am amazed at all they have achieved, and I applaud them for their amazing work ethic, for never taking their eyes off the dream. They are truly a team for the ages and I loved watching every minute of their journey. Sorry for being sappy, it's that time of year, you know! Merry Christmas!
