Rohene Ward used to be based in Chicago but he's in Colorado Springs (Monument), CO now. Alexander Ouriashev coaches some of the young skaters pictured - he's known as a jump specialist in the Chicago area.

I think Rohene is in Monument with Kori Ade's camp.

Eta @Sylvia :summer:

For me the problem with Shoma's skating is that he hasn't developed his own identity and is being given dated, war-horse type of choreography that isn't necessarily letting him engage his personality. It just shows off what he can do really well, it's clean and well presented, and it's worked before for other skaters, but he's somewhat forcing all of the expression in the long programs IMO (and it works lol, he has tons of energy). Last years SP was more him

He's being packaged based on image and aesthetics. I think that's maybe why even though everything is there, it still feels like something is missing. It also makes him slightly forgettable. None of his expression is completely natural IMO (even though he's a powerful performer), but he has everything needed to be an Olympic champion.

Let's not forget that last year was his first year in seniors. His SP was IMO a masterpiece - quirky music with strong choreography that that he pulled off really well. The LP was a warhorse piece of music but he managed to really perform exceptionally well to it. It's a great foundation for a first year in seniors, this coming season he will be able to grow. The area of his PCS that needs work IMO is in transitions - there were a lot of cross overs in his LP last year which meant a lot of two foot skating, the plus side is that he's incredibly fast for it, so he just needs to work on keeping up that speed with less cross overs.

Great Shoma's having a summer camp with a good technician. He and his team know him well. :) Thanks Sylvia for the further info. Nice to see him enjoying staying there with his rink mates. The young US girl's Japanese is so cute. :cheer:

I don't know whether it was intentional or not, but it's nice he got SKAM spot in CHICAGO (actually not "in" but still). :cheer: This summer's camp must be helpful for him technically and mentally. Another spot is CoR in Moscow. Steal people's heart in both cities, Shoma! :D :cheer2:

Shoma announced on his official site that he was invited to a Chinese show which celebrates the opening of Ice Castle in Shenzhen. It's scheduled on Aug 13th in Shenzhen.

Thanks for the info, @rosewood! I was on weibo and came across a poster featuring Shoma and Boyang, so I'm assuming they are both part of the ice show. Would love to see an informal showdown between these two talents.

Shoma's theme of this season is "Stay aggressive". (Last season's theme was "Aggressive".)

Clips from a Japanese news show. (1)
In the beginning of this clip you can see glimpses of his 3 weeks' summer training in Chicago under Gracie's former coach in July. He was working on school figures on one foot. The coach gave him an advice about up-and-down body movements during the one foot edge works. And the coach let him work on jumping on the floor for gaining stamina. Those training were the ones he never did in Japan - the announcer explained. During the interview Shoma said the 3 weeks' training was fruitful for him for strengthening his mental toughness and stamina since he was told to continue working even when he felt it's impossible to continue.

(2)
Shoma:
"I was filled with stress [when I messed up at Worlds.]"
"The turning point happened when I attempted to work on 4F for a change of air."
"Since I've felt since before that I need to get 2-3 different quads in my arsenal soon or later."

(3)
Shoma:
"I need to keep myself updated or I'll be left behind considering the rapid improvements in current mens' field.""I'll do my best so that I can stay competitive [in the field]."
In Friends on Ice he nailed a 4T in the first half of his new FS but fell on a 4F in the second half.
Shoma at the backstage of FoI:"4F will be done definitely."
He nailed a 4F in the finale of FoI.
Shoma on the way back home from FoI: "In the finale I was awarded. I'm happy I could finish this show without losing my self-confidence."

Copying my post from Japanese news thread in GSD:

Shoma had a media day today. He landed 4Lo during the practice.
Shoma: I'll not be satisfied with the new quad I can do. I'll do my best with keeping the thought in my mind that I have lots of things to work on other than that.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4tkaed_宇野選手-練習を公開_sport

The announcer said he worked mainly on 4F today, but if the consistency go better, he'll include 4Lo in his program(s).

Thanks rosewood! The men's field is so competive and Shoma and his team realizes it is not all about the jumps. He did win his recent competition but I am sure that not winning the FS will make him work on that second mark much harder.

Forgot to post Shoma won Lombardia Trophy last weekend.

Interview with Shoma after FS.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4sykol_ロンバルディア杯-男子fs_sport
Shoma: It was a good competition where I clearly found out what to work on from now. That said I think I did things that I could do at this point. I don't want to lose to myself of last season. I wish I'll receive good results as well as I'll show people that I've improved since last season.

Interview with Shoma about Rio Olys.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4t3fam_イタリアから帰国-課題と収穫は_sport
Shoma said he carefully watched team Japan members in gymnastics to see who's actually focused and who's feeling huge pressures. He said what he learned from them will be helpful in Korean Olys. (Men's team Japan (including Uchimura, Shirai etc) won a gold in the team event.)

Congratulations to Shoma for winning his First National Title! :cheer2:

Here is a video of the Medalist on Ice Gala. Interviews and back stage fluff with Team Japan with Dai as part of the commentating team. It is obvious that the skaters
feel very comfortable with Dai. The young girl commentating with Dai
is Miyu Honda a child actress and sister of Marin Honda.

Thanks for the original link!

Shoma skipped Yamada's annual show this season. Must be a good choice considering he's staying busy this season again - JSOI in January, Winter Asian Games, 4CC and Worlds. Wish all the best for his health and upward wave. Go Japan's national champion! :cheer2:
