Polina Edmunds has withdrawn from 2016 Worlds, replaced by Mirai Nagasu

My curiosity was peaked during TSL's interview with Mirai where she complained a bit about still training and having to be fit
'just in case', but not knowing whether or not she would compete. I get the impression that she had been informed of Edmund's difficulties and as such was probably training harder than the typical alternate might. At the time I thought it might be related to Wagner's issues from a few weeks back. Suffice to say I'm not totally surprised by the recent turn of events and have actually been heading to GSD and checking out the leading threads looking for something along these lines since I saw the interview. Of course, I'm happy for Mirai, but I hate that it has to come at the expense of another skater.

Polina cancelled her pre-Worlds presser last week, and it was likely then that Mirai was told that she was getting called up. I fully expect that Polina's camp was keeping US Figure Skating apprised of her condition, and they in turn, were keeping Mirai's team in the loop. It's common practice, and very classy.

I hope that it's not the case that both Wagner and Edmunds are injured and USFSA decided only one could go. I just want 3 three healthy skaters in Boston!

The rumor about the test skates was that it was just Gold and Wagner, right? I hope this isn't a serious injury for Polina.

Obviously over the moon for Mirai.

Yes, it was just Gold and Wagner. There was some nonsense about her not being able to come down from San Jose to Los Angeles, when in fact there's a shuttle to LA several times a day. That was a suspicious thing in itself.

Thanks @mag and @skatingfan5 Never heard of it before, don't even know of a German translation for it.
I wish Edmunds a speedy recovery and hope that Nagasu will be able to grab the chance she's been given and can deliver!

I found it being called "Knochenprellung", but those then were translated as "tiny fractures" (Minifrakturen) - and found in the knee mainly.

How do you bruise a bone?
It is not pleasant, and takes a long time to heal. I fell on my knee and got a bone bruise.
A bone bruise is a lot more painful and the pain lasts longer than the giant swelling of a bruise on the skin or in the muscle. It is one step before a fracture. The bone has a cortex with interconnected fibers and calcium fills the spaces between the fibers. When the bone strikes something, those fibers break and leak out the contents held between them. If enough fibers break then the result is a fracture of the bone. A bone bruise occurs when only a few of the fibers break.

O --- M ---- G

I went to IN before I came here and saw the news! I had a premonition just yesterday that Nagasu was going to be called today for an injured Wagner. Turns out it is Edmunds... I had a feeling since January that Nagasu would be going to Worlds.... Cant believe it. Excited as HECK, but sad for Edmunds....

Does anyone think this had anything to do with the 4CC withdrawal??? She had cited new boots but you never really know. If not she should have done it for points, points, points.

I am all for going to 4 cc. If Wagner did she would be in the final flight at Worlds. And now Edmunds is going to go without any ISU 4 CC or Worlds points.

However, Mirai will get her points and no worries at all now for her getting 2 GP assignments!!!

I hope SO much that Edmunds keeps that Gorg SP for next season and seriously gets a new LP thats as elegant as the SP!

USFSA has way too many injures skaters this year. Brown, Farris, Chen, Edmunds, Denny :(

I had the same thought and wonder if it is a chicken or the egg type thing. Boot problems could lead to health problems. Or an injury could be misdiagnosed as a boot problem. Or "Boot Problems" was a euphemism for injured and they did not want to admit it. Or they are both true and the poor thing has horrid luck.

Sabotaged Karen by withdrawing so soon before 4CCs and now attempting to do it again to Mirai. Slowly getting rid of the competition before 2018. :sekret:

Sad as I am that Polina is injured, I'm so glad it was Mirai who was the alternate! She has really won me over this season and I feel like she is prepared and ready to grab this opportunity and run with it. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she is the top American lady after the short program (if not overall)... I also find it really interesting that two of the three American ladies were on the Nationals podium EIGHT years ago! Who'd have thunk it back then? Anyway, I hope Mirai kicks some butt in Boston!
