I am glad Asahi terrestrial broadcast parts of Echoes, the BTS and the interview with Shuzo Matsuoka today. Very enjoyable watch.

My Twitter is full with appreciation from both fans and general public. Yuzu seems to gain even more interest nowadays because of the medalist anime and Yuzu’s comment on it in his membership video lol. I saw many Persona 3, Ghost in the Shell, and The Medalist fans watched today’s show and being amazed with Yuzu. Very deserved. Also saw some people said they turn on the TV accidentally and got hooked by Yuzu. LOL.

The full video is available in Weibo now: https://m.weibo.cn/detail/5127098727138184

Some translated Q&A between Shuzo and Yuzu:

Q: Did Yuzuru Hanyu surpass Yuzuru Hanyu in this Echoes ice performance?
A: Every time

Q: Is this ice show considered a sport?
A: It’s multiplication, the multiplication of sports and art
=======================
Masdes is very tiring, because if you don’t keep your toes fixed, you will keep sliding, and if you put your center of gravity on your heels, you will fall.

Q: (Watching the performance on the ice show) I feel that please don't waste your life like this anymore, especially Ballade. Even if you don't do a quad jump, no one will say anything. It's just an ice show.
A: As an occasion for performance, I think such strength and justice are necessary for ice shows. I think when everyone is watching me, they may think that they can never do that. When they see something amazing, they will be moved. This is what I hope to convey through my performance. I think this is also the core of sports performance.
Sports are very interesting. When I watched the Koshien competition, I wondered why I shed so many tears. I think it's because there is real enthusiasm in such a field, projecting the players' fighting spirit, so it is moving.

Q: What is the meaning of life?
A: I think I can't live just for myself. If I just live for myself, I can't burn my life. Because there are people who are looking forward to seeing me and want to be touched by me. Although the form may be different for each person, I want to be an opportunity for everyone to live. I skate with this idea. I think this is the meaning of life for me.
===========
Every time I plan the composition of the performance, I think "this is impossible", but if I compromise, I won't be able to fully convey what I want to convey. So in the end, for me, in a sense, it's not just for the audience, but for me, I can only see my dream from those parts that are beyond imagination. It's my justice to move forward towards this.

Did he describe this part?

No, he didn’t explain it. Although I wonder if he find a certain affinity with it.

I read that Persona is influenced by Carl Jung’s theory, and Yuzu has been mentioning Jung as reference since GIFT.

GS

In this interview Shuzo asked him, “Is the “me” mentioned in the story is Yuzuru Hanyu?”

And he answered (rough translation), “Not really, it is about who we are before we are named by our parents. This existence is a brain or a soul. And it’s asking this question of “who am I?””

I don’t think this is related to persona, though.

Yes, it's indeed based on Jungian psychology. Well, if he's mentioned Jung before, then maybe there indeed exists a tie, because that's what I'd wondered about the choice - whether it's supposed to be about your public persona versus what's going on inside you.

I think, he’s always been aware of that and be careful about what he can say in the public. Because his words have impact.

The last two days fans of The Medalist heard that he said “It is unrealistic to progressed that much in skating” and teased him, saying that his life is more unrealistic than the anime lol.

GIFT carried this inner-self vs outer-self theme, but I think it is different for Echoes. IMHO it is more about multiverse kind of thing, where people can have different outcomes in life if they do different things, and to simply move on.

It's good if he's doing research on things like these and adds aspect of his studies into his shows, that's for sure.

Yuzu is on the cover of this month's GOETHE magazine. (20 pages of photoshoots and interview)

Some excerpts from the interview (machine translated):
National skater Yuzuru Hanyu doesn't need easy, pretty words. It's been about two and a half years since he announced his professional turn in July 2022. He is the executive producer of "Ice Story," which began with a solo performance at the Tokyo Dome called "GIFT," and has completed three productions, "RE_PRAY" and "ECHOES OF LIFE." There is a sense of fulfillment that can only be found by overcoming a grand mission. He calmly looks back on his journey.

"It's been both difficult and fulfilling. I was thrown into a free world, and I've had to face the limitations that come with freedom, the lack of my own abilities, the path I need to pursue, and I've been searching for and reaching out to many different things, and I think it's now in my third year that I've finally begun to understand and pursue many things.

The links with video and projections, and the links between the story and the program have also deepened considerably. I feel like that's because the branches and roots I've been absorbing nourishment from, not just in skating, but in all sorts of things, are finally, little by little, becoming the trunk of a tree."
--
His pride can also be seen in his method of expression. He doesn't pander to those around him, but listens honestly to the pure voice inside his heart and incorporates it into his acting. He cited last year's performance "RE_PRAY" as an example. Through the worldview of games, he depicted the fate that lies beyond the repeated choices of life.

"Honestly, if I was to choose music for the people who have supported me since my competitive days, I think I should stick to classical music. But I decided to release a collection of game music because I wanted to stick to what I think is good. As a result, game fans and people who had no interest in figure skating before wanted to see me, and my base has expanded again. I don't want to just reach out every time, but I would like to use music that I truly think is good from my heart, that I really love. When people who like the work watch it, I would be happy if they can feel respect for the original work, but also see it as entertainment for the original Yuzuru Hanyu."
--
And in "ECHOES OF LIFE," which just finished in February, he used a variety of expressive techniques, from piano pieces to contemporary dance and hip hop, to convey the message that a series of coincidences is actually fate.

"Recently, I've gradually come to understand that if you have the technique and imagination, you can do it to a certain extent on the ice. This time, too, I tried to put the movements I learned on land into practice on the ice. I always think about what it is that I want to express at the core, and I hope to be able to express that through figure skating."

Really? Strange. He skated to music that was decidedly not 'classical' quite a few times. (maybe bad machine translation)

I get that he wanted to skate what appeals to him now, though, Japanese scores for games and anime are top notch.

Well, his current music choice... Let's just say that his fans from competition days were quite surprised by some of his choices (he made it work in the end, though).

Also, new anime work has just dropped! :D

No doubt, but I wouldn't say his taste during competitions was 'classical' I guess. Also his gala music tended to be even more outré, heh.

Yep, saw the anime clip! I'd seen a comment in Japanese that really struck me, that 4Lz is the jump that got him injured going into the PC Olympics, and here he is jumping it in the MV. I'm guessing it fits the anime plot

Well, he's trying to be inclusive by adding bits from the original work, I guess.

The 4Lz could be a nod to both Hikaru and her coach, Jun Yodaka (who is said to be the OGM and 4Lz is his best jump). The broken leg spin is a nod to Inori, the main character.

I initially didn't think that song is skateable, given the fast tempo and all. I am happy he proves me wrong.

What’s the problem about that? He loves the program. And it fits.
I don't have a problem at all, I love that program :D It's one of his signature pieces IMO.
I thought his Haru yo Koi gala was stunning, post-PyeongChang, and wished he'd done something similar in competition.
:)

I was actually sad he didn't do it last time. So I'm happy he's brought it back.

He skated it in nearly every show before Echoes. So it deserved a short rest, I suppose.
But he truly loves it. David Wilson makes excellent show programs for him - Notte Stellata, Haru Yo Koi, Danny Boy…

Fans’ analysis on this year’s Notte Stellata is that the three programs: Bolero, Seimei, and Haru Yo Koi are symbolizing the natural disaster (bolero), the purification (seimei), and prayer for a better future (haru yo koi). :)

To whoever's redoing these programs for the ice shows... do you really still need the A-frame spin. I mean he's not hunting level requirements anymore, what is Abe no Seimei supposed to be doing there, farting at his enemies?

Like I'm very sorry, he's such a gorgeous spinner and he still needs to do this ass-slow literal ass spin or what? Flying change sit spin is so good with so much bodily awareness, actually you know what even the rest of that combo spin is so well done. And then there's that position. Like why.

Who did this for the ice? something tells me SLB. Actually I bet the butt spin idea was SLB too, she's there, so.

I like the split second he skated with Satoko, reminds me of the times when IIRC people used to joke he can just throw Satoko in Pairs for a team medal. Japan don't need a 'pair' like that anymore, of course, but still funny.

Mansai Nomura has an incredible presence on stage. And I like that they didn't take short cuts and did a full length routine to Bolero.

ETA: Oh also shoutout to Akiko for doing well when we could actually see her...

ETA2: The Nomura performance in thread leads to 2017. Here I've found a 2013 performance of the bolero on stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVSvifIMjL8&ab_channel=YuZawaaka

IDK if the person in the thread is being accurate about 2011, but I can't verify it, so if there's a video, please do link it!

SLB, most likely. The practice BTS showed them on ice.

The 2011 info came from this Hochi article, but I also haven’t seen the video. The one I saw is from the 2017.
