The most fun I ever had in Vegas was a Christmas spent at the old Landmark Hotel (now demolished). It was on the strip across from the also demolished Flamingo Hotel & had a restaurant in the revolving tower. You could see the entire strip & it was gorgeous at night with all the lights. This was in the early 80's when all the original hotels were still going strong - Dunes, Stardust, Sands, Riviera, etc.

Since this seems to be the active Vegas thread, I am copying my post from the other Vegas thread:

I am going to Vegas in a few days (been there at least 3 times already). I have never been to a Cirque du Soleil show and would like to see one some day. The only ones I am considering are Michael Jackson (at Mandalay Bay), Beatles Love (at Mirage) and Mystere (at Treasure Island). Any comparisons of the MJ one? It seems everyone has already posted about the other two. O is not running anymore. I am not interested in Ka and Zumanity.
The reviews of the MJ Cirque were very good, and I am a big Michael Jackson fan, but one person mentioned that the sound was extremely loud throughout. I am concerned about that because one of my guests (my sister) is very sensitive to loud music (she gets headaches). Has anyone been to the MJ cirque?
I was shocked by the ticket prices. The lowest was around $90-100 (Mystere was $70 for the lowest) but really bad seats it seems (corners at the very back, and 4th level). The next level (3rd) was in the $115-$128 range (still affordable), but still didn't look that great on the seats map.
A friend told me that it's important to get good seats, but those are in the $155 -$200 range. I am going there with my two guests, so that's a chunk of money, and I don't even know if they will like it.
As possible alternatives (more economical) I am considering a BeeGee's song & dance show and a Michael Jackson's songs show. The latter is at the North end of the strip (Stratosphere) while we will be at the south end (Luxor), so distance wise the Bee Gees show sounds better. Anyone has any experience with either one?

Does the Irish Cheddar Mac-n-cheese contain alcohol?

The walkway from the Luxor to the Mandalay Bay is by the theaters/Titanic exhibit/food court in the Luxor.

The mac-n-cheese doesn't have alcohol, just good cheese, mushrooms, pasta, and a buttery panko crumb topping (and you can order it with a protein, like chicken, for an extra cost).

You can skip the Tex-Mex restaurant in that same shopping/restaurant area. I'm sure you get 1000 times better in Phoenix.

I didn't know "O" had closed, that show was amazing.

There are several half-price ticket booths to Vegas shows in Vegas, I know one is in the mall in front of the Planet Hollywood hotel/casino. I think there might be one outside between the Luxor and Excalibur as well, but I'm not 100% sure. If you Google half price Vegas shows, I'm sure you'll get plenty of options. Every show I've even been to in Vegas has been loud though, except a comedy show.

It's worth just a walk through the Cosmopolitan to see the crystal chandelier glass work throughout.

Peibeck, this sounds great. I will look for the half price tickets to shows. Thanks for the info on the Cosmopolitan also. I didn't know anything about it.

The Flamingo is still there. Were you thinking of one of these other hotels?

No, I already have hotel reservations. It's probably too late to change it. I would have considered either Mirage or Treasure Island (today their rates are low but when I made the reservations they were higher). I got a great deal at Luxor so I would rather save my money and stay there.

The Flamingo is too old, and expensive for an old hotel. The ones you posted links to are really nice but a bit pricey for me, at least for this trip.

Used to love New York, New York, because of its roof-top roller-coaster. Until the Venetian came up. Now it's Venetian, and Venetian only! Bellagio is very nice too, but Venetian is better located and has nicer rooms for the money.

Really was replying to taf's post, not suggesting you change your hotel.

The last time I went we had kids to grandparents---all ages. And the people who were not interested in gambling ,with evenings devoted to shows, wanted daytime at a splendid swimming pool at a reasonable rate. So we went to the Mirage.

My sister adores "The Four Seasons" which apparently is situated on top of another casino? I don't know but she lurved it but it was pricey for the family trip.

I thought they were going to take down the Flamingo a few years ago... the last time I was there, there were signs. I'm probably confusing it with some other old hotel.

The old Mandarin (Imperial?) Palace is now gone- replaced by the Linq. I have never stayed at either, but there were bad reports from the I P in its last days.

Just got back from my Vegas trip. It was my 4th trip there, but that's over a 25 years span, and about 6-7 years since my last one.

We stayed at the Luxor. it was my second time at that hotel. I do like Luxor for its theme and decorations, but I also noticed some drawbacks. There is no bus stop and no easy way to get to the mono rail. Even a pick up point for the bus tour we took was at Excalibur, and not at Luxor. We enjoyed the free tram rides between the 3 hotels though.

Being at south strip is usually not an issue for me, but my sister has some health issues and we were limited by how much she can walk or how much energy she has (not much, in each case). I had no idea how weak she was when I made those hotel reservations. A strange thing was that years ago when I took my mother to Vegas, we stayed at the Luxor and my usually healthy mother became very ill. I had to use a limousine and a wheel chair for her, throughout our stay. She still enjoyed the trip.

It was a major mistake on my part to reserve the Luxor at this time. I needed to pick a hotel on central strip. We wasted a lot of time just going to the Mono rail station (bus was out of the question because it was too hot: 108-110 deg.F), walking through casinos to get to the strip, and finally taking taxi from MGM grand (3 times in 2 days) because she was too exhausted, so we couldn't use the walkways. I had many regrets because she was able to see far fewer places than she would have, had we stayed at one of the center strip hotels. Despite everything, she and her husband enjoyed the trip. They had never been to Vegas, and they were happy with what they saw (Bellagio, Venetian, Statue of Liberty at NY2, Eiffel tower at Paris, and Mirage when we went to see the Beatles Love).

We did use the walkways/trams between Luxor and Mandalay Bay/Excalibur/New York 2, but everything involved walking which was not something my sister handled well. We had to stop at many times and I was very worried for her throughout.

The highlight of our trip was the Cirque du Soleil- Beatles Love (I posted in the other thread about this). Next time I want to see the Michael Jackson One.

We took an evening tour by Grayline, to see the lights of Vegas. We got to see the Bellagio from the inside (Chihuly chandelier at the entrance, the garden, the fountains, etc.) Unfortunately we didn't get to see the volcano at the Mirage because it was a windy day, so they had canceled the volcano. The Fremont street show was a bit tiring because we had to wait for almost 30 minutes before the show began, which meant 30 minutes of loud music. We finally went inside a casino to escape that. The wait time was due to the cancellation of the Mirage Volcano.

I didn't like the downtown area much. Not sure what draws people to downtown hotels. It seems like the strip has just about everything.

I can go to Vegas again, since I live in Phoenix and it's a one hour ride plane ride (6 hours drive by car). Next time I want to see the Cosmopolitan, Aria, Wynn and Encore. I may stay at the Wynn since I have heard so much about it, or at Mandalay Bay if I am going to the Michael Jackson One.

Her ability to enjoy Vegas will always be limited, then; because even the smaller hotels are "large"/spread out, for those with mobility issues.

I think we will be OK if we are in the center of the strip. She doesn't have a walking disability. It's a different issue (I will PM you about it, so as to not distract from the thread topic).
