What an amazing top 6! I continue to think Wakaba was underscored but whatevs :drama:

Happy that Isabeau was able to skate well after her season being mostly derailed by injury - but my god her jump entrances :yikes:

I hope Amber can reflect on what an amazing season she had and come back strong next year.

Kaori was the highlight for me. As others have said, I don't love this program, but this performance slayed :kickass:

And Alysa did indeed vibe her way to the top with her Fields of Gold dress! What else to say?

A question that probably got answered somewhere - does Alysa still have braces, or does she have a grill on her front two teeth? I could believe either

Will be an interesting Olympic year for ladies. No tiny teens with 4`s, etc. Everyone realitively on equal playing ground. Now every one going home to figure out how to increase base value. Alysa adding 3A or second 3-3. Isabeau cleaning up jumps maybe getting another 3-3 back. Amber may have the best posibility. She`s healthy and strong. Add second 3A in combination? She could use a lot more GOE. I don`t know the Japanese ladies well enough - Kaori seems maxed out. Could Wakaba get a 3A back?

Happy/surprised about Alysa. Did anyone else think her GOE was lavish? In the Y. Kim range.

I fell asleep during Haien Lee (who can blame me  ), but I'm SO GLAD I woke up and watched the remainder of this in real time.

A few thoughts on the final group:

Schizas remains disappointing, despite flashes of better performance this season. She dug her own grave, taking out the second lutz in favor of a poorly executed 3T. She can't expect to be top 10 with that content. I wouldn't mind see another Canadian women take the sole spot in Milano-Cortina.

I've always liked Sakamoto's Chicago more than most people and many of her previous programs. I feel vindicated. I'd have probably given her the free skate, but I don't understand the claims of partisan calling. Will all the people complaining about non-calls for Liu please look at Sakamoto's flutzes, Chiba's flutzes, almost all of Chiba's jumps, Higuchi's lip, etc.? IMO there was "equal opportunity blindness" from the panel. It seemed to me like they were watching the shoulders instead of the feet and only reviewing elements where the upper body indicated edge change or underrotation.

I knew Levito was never going to get a 3T on the end of that first 3F. I wonder if 3F+2T and a clean skate could've gotten her the bronze -- probably not. The initially high tech tracker shows that she does a good job of filling every box - L4 spins and steps, with high GOE. Jump technique aside, she did well to get by with one < (on that hopeless 3T), one q, and avoiding "e" calls. Pretty jumps don't matter in COP as much as ones that avoid calls. Doing the combos on the flips, instead of the lutzes, has helped her GOE, and the 3F+2A is an improvement over the 3F+1eu+3S. I still think she should consider putting in a second loop v. a second lutz (and the USFS needs to lobby for the Japanese flutzers/lippers to get called, too). And, yes, please better packaging and less sleepy music. Her short and free this year were both tinkly piano. Balletic music suits her, but something more dramatic with more light and shade could work better.

I said to a friend after the SP that Liu was skating with (not quite) Sakamoto-like power. I agree with others here who say her jumps look bigger. and her stamina much improved There were 1-2 "marked clean in the system" (loved KMT's shade, and commentary in general), but see rant above about non-calls for Sakamoto. It all evened out.

What a great night and week of skating! I'm not sure I can manage to stay up until 3 am again for men, but we'll see. I'm glad I did for women and even pairs!

The hugs between Kaori and Alysa totally redeemed the stupid leader chair! Even better, for the opposite reason the ISU put it there.
The hugs were certainly a highlight of this fantastic evening! The excitement and anticipation of "can anyone top this?" from the crowd kept building from the minute Amber came on the ice, and continued throughout the evening. The noise in the arena was deafening! I'm thrilled for Alysa and the whole American and Japanese team of women!!

As for Isabeau, I’m still not a fan. She is a beautiful skater, but the dresses are not good and her jump technique is 😬. Every jump has a gimmick into it. She is mentally tough as well, I’m just not sure her technique is going to hold. Where I feel like Alysa has worked on her technique, I feel like Isabeau is just trying to hang on through the Olympics.
Being among the Delaware Valley/NJ skating community (albeit, I've been off ice for years and trying to get back), the take I get from others is that a little less Mommy and a little more Isabeau herself managing her choices in skating would be in order, although I don't know the actual full situation. I believe her mother is originally from Milan, so I'm guessing there's a LOT of pressure on her to make the Olympic Team next year considering the location of the games. We just have to look at Alysa taking a breather and taking the major skating decisions away from her father to see how much this benefitted her (recall: he FIRED the coaches she loved and is now back with just before the 2022 Games).

And Isabeau's skating dresses - UGH, they're scream "Granny" and take away from her beauty and the beauty of her skating. She needs a good costume designer - pronto.

Has Alysa ever cracked under pressure before? I don’t recall there being any meltdowns in her past. So maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that she handled the moment perfectly. How wonderful to see someone really deliver in a bit of a once in a lifetime situation. Home worlds, after taking two seasons off, leading unexpectedly. Many would have understandably wilted.

The calls are what they are, but the panel was generous to everyone from my view point. I’d rather things be judged correctly, but being consistently lenient is better than when we see scrutiny on some and a free pass for others.

Isabeau also really did herself some favours with how she is viewed by the federation I think. She can be relied on and isn’t going to wilt either. I think if this had gone another way, she could have had a lot of work to do to regain their trust.

The triple-triple is hanging on by a thread, but some of her other jumps actually look a bit better with some of the power she has gained over the last year. The technique is of course horrific, but if she remains injury free until next year, I think she will retain what she has. The combo will be the key for her next season though.

Amber did well to fight back and avoid a disaster. Still a similar story to years before though. If, if, if.

Kaori seems like a truly wonderful person and I can’t help but cheer for her. She also really delivered in a moment where she could have wilted. A better program and dress for next season please and thank you.

Had to watch on delay due to a commitment, but I think that ended up working okay because I'm much more serene when the event is already over.

Repond: Very happy that she held onto 12th and two spots for SUI. I hope she keeps skating for a long time because she's showing flashes of brilliance and with added maturity, it will be beautiful to watch

Schizas: At first, I felt bad for her coming so close to the top 10. With a little bit of time to reflect, I hope she and SC are happy with this achievement. In general, she's not as good a skater as the top 10 (except in an Any Given Sunday surprise) and she did the best of the skaters in her tier (Repond, Gutmann, etc.).

Kim & Lee: Not Korea's year. Hard to see Kim make mistakes after she's been so consistent. Also, readily apparent that she needs to be clean in order for her programs to make an impression

Petrokina: Not her Euros skate, but good overall

Pinzarrone: The artistic commitment was sublime. Time to hone in on technique and make those jumps bigger so she can rise further in the ranks.

Higuchi: Not at all sure that I agree with 6th place for her. The glide, the flow, the power, the ease in her jump landings, the way she attacks her steps. :swoon: I do think she could give more expression, particularly facial expression, earlier in the program, but not sure that would really help her score as she seems pigeon-holed in JPN #3 spot

Glenn: Nice comeback. Also good to see her bend her knees and not be stiff like she was in SP. Too many pops to contend

Levito: The fall on the 3-3 combo really took her out of it, and eesh, that picking position. Program felt very same-y to her SP. She's got some versatility, let her show it. Overall, though, impressive return from injury

Chiba: Good skating skills, a little subdued in expression compared to SP. Good program layout to maximize the points and executed it well

Sakamoto: Best she's skated this program, very free and engaged. And great sportsmanship!

Liu!!!!!!!!! Girl has nerves of steel. So happy for her :cheer:

Barring injury or psychological disaster, our team to Milan skated last night. Hard to argue with those results.

And again I marvel at the talent that has blossomed since pre-pubescent quads went away. I’m sorry for Mao S who would be a star next winter, but other than that the age limits are doing what they should. Sofia S looked so healthy and strong, imagine the shit she would take competing in Russian system now.

Whatever they are, they do nothing for her.
Alysa is too polite to say it, but "Okay, Boomer..." mind, I'm Gen X and I'm not a fan of the piercing, but I gave up the fight over facial piercings beyond the single earring ones 20 years ago when older niece got her first nose piercing, which she replaced with a tongue stud a few years later. Older nephew & younger niece have followed suit... None have the smiley piercing Alysa has, but, honestly piercings are a better choice than tats - at least you can remove a piercing later on in life, tats are forever (or at least really expensive to remove).

At the beginning of the season everyone thought so but somewhere along the way someone actually asked Alysa about it and she said it was a piercing and that she did it herself.
Anyone that can pierce their own gum is impervious to pain, made of kryptonite and has nerves of steel That's why she cartwheeled and catapulted to the gold medal.

Some thoughts:
  • Belgian Nina's musicality just stands out for me. I hope she works on her jumps for next year to get rid of those underotations. Her turn out, extensions, and use of the accents is the best in the current field.
  • Kaori seemed like she was lacking her usual spark this year. Not yesterday. She finally skated that programme with power and commitment, and she had fun. I thought for sure she had the gold after she finished. That's what made her and Alysa stand out. They skated with freedom.
  • I know we have lots of gymanstics fans on this board. I'm thrilled for Alysa L because she isn't just a 14 year old prodigy with talent who never managed to win anything. I found myself thinking of gymnasts like Dominique Moceanu, or Anna Pavlova, who were simply amazing at 14, but never quite managed to reach their potential once they turned senior. What a moment for her, and for figure skating in general.

I got my friend who’s a newbie fan to watch the top five women and give me her ranking.

she ranked them:
1. Alysa
2. Kaori
3. Amber
4. Mone
5. Isabeau

she thought Kaori would’ve won but was very pleasantly surprised that Alysa did. she also really liked Isabeau’s costumes and was appalled when I said that FSU by and large didn’t like the shade of green for Isabeau’s FS dress and the whickety whack. she thinks you should all be more accepting of whickety whack

Caught up with the event on On Demand here (unable to watch the live stream).

All I can really say is that Kaori and Alyssa were fabulous and rocked. Wonderful to see the top two performances without a single mistake and fantastically performed. And the sportsmanship was incredible.

I loved Alyssa's reactions. During her program she was having a blast. She was all kinds of WTFJH (WTF just happened?) over winning and looked in shock. Even on the podium she couldn't focus on the flag and she was looking around probably saying to herself "Did I just do that?". It was such an honest and authentic reaction.

If there was one other skater that stood out for me it was Samoldelkina. She is quite amazing. Great technique and she is really beautiful in her expression.

And Kurakova which her Cats program was very cute.
