Why were c/fb immediately considered Oly medal contenders upon news of their partnership

on this and other forums the prevailing impression was this new team were podium contenders before seen at a single competition.

I think because Cizeron is Olympic champion and F-B was always considered the stronger ice dancer in her previous partnership and it was thought she would have better results with a stronger partner.

We don’t have much to compare this with, but some may recall that for a few months Shae-Lynn Bourne and Peter Tchernyshev were training together hoping to represent Canada at the 2006 Olympics. I remember talk that they could potentially take silver behind Navka. Of course that seemed premature as very few people had seen them skate together at that point, but it was also based on Shae-Lynn’s previous results and the fact that Peter was considered a very strong ice dancer who could potentially place higher with the right partner. That is the most similar situation I can think of to what happened this year, although of course it didn’t happen so we never found out if they were good enough to potentially medal.

Woah I had completely, completely forgotten this Bourne & Tchernyshev possibility.

Did they ever perform publicly? Like a training rink show or something?

Objectively Guillaume and Laurence individually are much better skaters than any of the teams who were considered for the podium this year. So the only question was whether they could gel as a team in the short timeframe they had.

Aside from Guillaume's obvious success and pedigree people also forget that FB/S placed 5th at Worlds 2023 less then a point behind F/G (beat them in the FD) and only 3 pts from the podium that consisted of C/B G/F and G/P. There was a lot of buzz and momentum for them at that time and Laurence did all that with a weaker partner. She was arguably already the strongest female ice dancer of the whole top five at that competition.

And we can't ignore the fact that when you have two skaters of this quality the competition at the top wasn't that big a challenge.

End of the day all the things that made people think this team had potential before we even saw them turned out to be correct. They did gel very well together and Laurence even got a bump in her skills having a partner she could unleash her full power with, 🤷

They did the finale of 2 night’s shows in Newington before it was announced, they skated separately in the show but just did a short bit together at the end (the video Marbri linked). We also watched them training together for a while that same week (it hadn’t yet been announced although the decision had been made by then). Toeloopy (RIP :( ) also saw them practice their OD when she went to do a piece on them for Blades on Ice.

ETA: they were also booked to do the Celebration on Ice tour in Canada later that year but split before it when Naomi said she would come back, so Shae-Lynn did those shows solo.

Thanks for this! And thank you @marbri for the video.

Ah, so this was before Lang tried to come back for the US Nats 2004. Makes sense with thr citizenship for Canada timeline.

No, it wasn’t actually that time. It was after. They withdrew from 2004 after the CD with her ankle cyst, then she got pregnant and they said they were retiring. Then Peter and Shae teamed up that summer but split in the fall. Then moving forward L/T were named to Skate America 2005 although they hadn’t announced anything, I’m pretty sure it was Shae who had said Naomi potentially indicated she wanted to come back as an explanation why it didn’t work with Peter. Then they were removed from S/A. Nothing was ever said about it.

Sorry for the confusion and for taking this so off topic
