Why all of the mid-routine costume changes?

I wish the ladies would take better advantage of being able to wear pants now. Leonova did a rousing routine to Pirates of the Caribbean wearing a costume with bag shorts to below the need. And last year a European skater whose name I don't recall did a rousing routine to an ACDC song. She was a wearing a leather jackets and jeans, IIRC. Mette has rocked the cat suit, and of course Vanessa James has taken it in a now whole level..

But I suppose FS remains culturally conservative in some ways. Skaters figure 'if it works, don't fix it' - which is a bit creatively stifling.

And when I say pants, I don't mean just cat suits. I mean slacks, jeans, baggy shorts, and so on. It would really open up the program and music possibilities for the ladiezz.

It was Ivett Toth, in the Olympic season, and she wore pleather pants, not jeans. :)

I would also like to see more women wearing trousers, not catsuits. A woman skating in the old men's standby of trousers, a roll-sleeved shirt, suspenders and a tie or a waistcoat and tie would be a very nice change indeed. I also have a great fondness for Hamon/Strekalin's free skate costumes from the previous two seasons not least because they were a rare example of a girl (as Cleo Hamon was at the time) in figure skating wearing a non-slinky bodysuit.

During yesterday’s Olympic Channel coverage of the Rostelecom ladies sp event, commentator Charlie White expressed his concern about the distraction and silliness of costume changes (such as Trusova’s). Right on, Charlie! By the way, Charlie is turning out to be one of the most insightful TV commentators ever...and not afraid to speak his mind, especially about aesthetic issues such as costume & music choices. Great!
