What is with that final paragraph? They saw each other at a 1998 event but didn't speak to each other? Didn't they go on TV (I think that year) for a big, awkward special and sit in the same room as Tonya offered some kind of apology? I am not at home, but I think I even have that on a DVD-R. If my memory is indeed right, what sloppy reporting.

I remember watching that as well, I don’t know why that was not brought up

I don't think I'd ever known that Lulu was going to retire after 1994. I think she was still quite young then. I'm glad she kept skating, at least for our selfish fan benefit.
I think the point is that Lulu perceived that the wait for Oksana was really long because she had time to make a major life decision.

😬 At least she didn't say on camera "So she's going to get out here and cry again."

OTOH we should remember Lulu didn't compete at 1994 Worlds due to a stress fracture.

So Lulu is at her second Olympics. She just got the first medal for China and she has an injury. Oksana is repeatedly redoing her make up because she can't stop crying. So Lulu asking herself "what now" seems fairly realistic.

I thought that the delay was caused because the officials at the venue were trying to locate the Ukrainian anthem, not that Oksana was redoing her makeup. I've always heard that the misunderstanding was caused when someone mistakenly relayed that about Oksana to Nancy, who then made her infamously snarky and very unsportsmanlike remark.

They both sound like they are doing well. Probably better than Nicole Bobek?

BTW, I recall Baiul back in 94 and she did seem to cry a lot :wuzrobbedbut then she was only 15 and came from a very challenging background to get to the Olympics.

I thought the NK comment re Disneyland was worse "How corny."

Oksana got emotional and cried at the Olympics after her scores came up when she was sitting at the Kiss & Cry. She may have also wiped a tear or two on the podium. Other than that, I don't remember Oksana 'crying a lot'? She may have also understandably cried after she and Germany's Tanja Szewczenko crashed into each during a practice a day or so before the Free Skate. Oksana had to get a few stitches on her cut leg, and an Olympic approved muscle relaxer for her sore back but I've never seen footage of Baiul crying during that difficult time either. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Keep in mind, and I think I missed it back then and just realized it recently, I think we witnessed on live TV Lulu telling Nancy that she should have won . . . so the cameras were all up in their business like never before.

Yes they were. But that doesn't excuse Nancy's poor sportsmanship. I'll never forget her dirty look towards Oksana on the podium as the gold medal was draped around Baiul's neck. Speaking of which, someone on one of those Nancy backstage YouTube videos mentioned that, the day after the event, their local newspaper printed an editorial cartoon with a smiling Oksana on the top of the podium and a glowering Nancy, arms crossed, on the lower step. That cartoonist captured that unfortunate moment perfectly. And it was embarrassing to see an American Olympic athlete infamously drawn in this way. But it was the truth. A display of poor sportsmanship.

You're not wrong.

The way I look at it, that whole podium had a tragic story where everybody had messed up relationships with their coaches.

I thought it was wearing her medal in public that she thought was so corny.
In Nancy's time, the Silver medal was "the 1st loser medal", so it felt corny to consider it a trophy.

Really, Michelle Kwan helped change this attitude four years later when she declared that she did not lose the gold but won the silver.

(It is important to say that because every thread is really about Michelle Kwan :P)
