I'm reading numerous newsprint and internet sites on the top storied of 2022, but am interested in what thus diverse board members think are the top stories of 2022 and the reasons why.

I'm amazed at the stories/events I don't remember as the year goes on.

Controversial top story? The delusional Nobel Peace Prize. Although I guess so many Nobel Peace Prizes are controversial, that I should try to be more original.

I think at least 2 of mine include

Russia invading Ukraine and the resilience of the Ukrainian people

The US Supreme Court overturning Roe

I'm still pondering the other 3 I would put up there. I think there are plenty of US, but tryng to think more globally too

  • Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its aftermath.
  • China gives up on COVID-zero.
  • The Red Wave becomes a red trickle.
  • Iran's women fight for their rights.
  • Inflation grinds everyone down.

In Israel: the worst government in my lifetime.

Any additional ones? Five top stories
Omicron rips through the world.

Russia doping teenage girl and Olympic fallout (Valieva scandal)

Record high inflation

Roe vs Wade struck down

Covid 19 restrictions taken off almost everywhere during 2022

Russia invades Ukraine
Jan 6 insurrection in the US
abortion rights struggle in US
COVID (especially in China - zero-tolerance/Olympics to let it rip)
protests in Iran

As I read your lists, I'm thinking - ooh that's a good one. Or I remember that being a big deal until this jumped to the forefront.

It was an eventful year. It stooped to a low early on in the western hemisphere (and remains low on that front), but the end of the year was filled with hope for this hemisphere. It's not all perfect, but it's good to see.

January 6 was 2021.

Russia invades Ukraine
US midterms repudiation of election denial
China reverses zero-CoVID policy (the murder of millions of old people is significant)
Massive weather catastrophes (heatwaves, droughts, hurricanes etc)
Nationally, Roe reversal

Reactions: Rob
Jan 6 committee- what a great job they did.

My visit to Scandinavia- after years of planning and waiting due to C19.

Putin's stupidity

Former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill said with politics "everything is local." And so it is for me looking at the past year:

1. Roe V Wade overturned and the smackdown in Kansas: Abortion foes were convinced they would win handily on their proposed amendment. Boy were they wrong. The Dobbs decision woke us up. And I knew after that Kansas vote that the red candidates were not going to ride in on a tsunami in November. And now we see a budding underground railroad trying to help girls and women in restricted states.

2. Ukraine's resilience: Be honest...who thought Ukraine could withstand their huge neighbor and then start to WIN against their huge neighbor? This is a testament to dogged determination, bravery and the knowledge that we get by with a little help from our friends.

3. Russia: WTF? You need to invade Ukraine, you RUIN the budding career of a skating phenom by drugging her (and God only knows who else) and you seem beyond help when it comes to your hatefulness towards people who happen to be gay. Who needs you?

4. The women and the younger folks in Iran. So brave, so so brave as hundreds lost their lives for basic human rights. I have such hope for that country if the youthquake can somehow conquer the power of the mullahs.

5. The death of the Queen. You don't sit on the throne that long and then NOT be a major story when you pass. Plus...I liked her.

Very true! I should have specified the Jan 6 committee's work - there's a lot we didn't know even by this time last year.

Also, I hope the US midterms were a repudiation of election denial, but I suspect a lot was also a reaction to the Roe reversal and it was still too close in most races.

Politics
--------

1. Ukraine and the fight against Putin.
2. Global fight against right-wing authoritarianism.
3. Inflation. I think it's been a bigger story, a bigger issue, than has really been discussed here on FSU.
4. Climate change. Storms, droughts, etc.
5. American midterms--finally some hope, but still a lot of headwinds politically for Democrats.

Skating
--------

1. Russia and the international ban on Russian skaters.
2. Valieva and doping.
3. Weird decisions/direction of Chinese fed.
4. Nathan Chen. Arguably the best spokesman for the sport in the U.S. since Michelle Kwan.
5. Malinin and quad Axel.

This has been an eventful year.

Russia invading Ukraine is easily the biggest story.

The death of the Queen was another huge event.

In terms of politics, the UK had rotating Prime Ministers during the summer .

France voted for Macron again.

Brazil voted Lula back in .

Roe V. Wade was struck down here in the US.

.In crime, Shinjo Abe assassinated.

Paul Pelosi attacked

The Uvalde school shooting

The Idaho College murders
In sports, the controversy over Qatar hosting the World Cup.

Of course the Argentina/France -Messi/Mbappe duel for the final and Messi finally getting the World Cup.

Pelé 's death :wuzrobbed

In figure skating , I think most of us would say Valieva's doping situation completely overshadowed the Olympic figure skating event.
Although , I did personally enjoy seeing P&C and S&H take that extra step up the podium.

The ones I'm hoping will have the biggest lasting positive effect are the protests in Iran and in China. Bit of trepidation here, I was cheering when Glasnost & Perestroika spelt the end of the Soviet Bloc, but that didn't prevent Putin or Orban from coming to power. Still, there was enough good to make a positive impact. If there could be Openness and Restructuring in Tehran and Beijing......

Just of the top of my head in no particular order:

1) War in Ukraine
2) Freedom Convoy occupation
3) Iran protests
4) Overturning Roe v Wade
5) Protests against China’s zero Covid policy
6) Russian atrocities in Ukraine
7) US Elections
8) Pelé’s death
9) Morocco‘s run in the World Cup
10) Valieva’s doping
11) Sale of Twitter
12) Liz Truss’s rise and fall
13) Malinin’s quad Axel
14) Inflation
15) Judgement against Alex Jones

NBC listing for top US stories (reported on my local news)

5. No red wave, just a trickle
4. Mar-a-Lago raid
3. Jan 6th investigation reports
2. Roe
1. Ukraine

More localised, the Teal Wave during the Australian Federal election, that was huge. We didn't just reject the right-wing Liberal Party, we threw them straight out into the garbage, as they rightly deserved.

The floods, that never seemed to end.

The death of the Queen for sure. She felt like the last pillar of stability.

The execution of two police officers and a neighbour in Queensland by sovereign-citizen, right-wing extremists. That was so genuinely shocking, nobody saw it coming.

I'm disappointed that the Canadian news network CTV did not mention Roe in its top ten stories of the year.

They are down to number 1, which will be announced tonight. And I expect that will be the death of the queen (Ukraine has already been mentioned).

And the women of Iran should be granted a spot of importance too - I think they were number 8 on CTV's list.
