We Could Be Heroes: Duhamel and Radford Uber Thread

cross-posting from the Rippon thread:
Writer and former pairs skater Chris Schleicher wrote a pretty interesting piece for Salon: https://slate.com/culture/2018/02/a...-queer-excellence-to-the-winter-olympics.html

Excerpt:
Eric Radford doesn’t rattle off the ready-for-late-night bon mots of Rippon, but in many ways, his historic queer narrative is even more interesting. Radford came out publicly in 2015, the same year he won his first of two world championships in pairs, making him the first openly gay man to win that title. Earlier this week, Radford won a gold medal in the team event, making him the first openly gay man to win a Winter Olympic gold. Last night, he earned an additional bronze medal in the pairs event with partner Meagan Duhamel. Everything’s coming up, Radford! But for some reason, probably because Radford is not in a high-profile standoff with his nation’s executive branch, he hasn’t caused the same media frenzy as Rippon at this Olympics.

Radford’s skating is incredibly different from Rippon’s. Whereas the latter’s style shouts, “Let me be your star!” Radford serves up a much more subdued elegance that whispers, “How can I help you?” And indeed, Radford’s pair work with Meagan Duhamel bespeaks a team of two equals, and perhaps that’s because Radford doesn’t fit into a hetero archetype. Without being forced to fit themselves into familiar romantic storylines in their program, Duhamel and Radford are free to explore other ways that men and women relate.

And from Sav/Mas thread: If you haven't watched the medal ceremony (individual event) and you'd like to, here you are!
Finally the video of the actual medal ceremony and not geoblocked :cheer2:

Meagan and Eric just retired from competitive skating. Sad day for me. I will miss them dearly. They have given so much to their sport and are responsible for moving the technical aspects of the sport forward. We are gonna miss you guys and Canada is so proud of the both of you. I hope you both find another adventure you can give your all to.

Meagan wrote about her Olympics experience in her blog (Feb. 20, 2018): http://www.lutzofgreens.com/the-olympics/
Excerpt from the end:
We stood on that podium and received our bronze medals with pride. My bronze medal looks and feels like gold. It almost feels like a lifetime achievement award, that will forever serve as a reminder of an amazing journey.
I’ve learned so many lessons during my skating career, but the most important lesson of all is to NEVER GIVE UP. I’ve learned that the most difficult roads often lead to the most beautiful destinations. I’ve run into endless amounts of road blocks that I had to find a way around. I failed thousands of times to get these Olympic moments and medals. I was counted out and criticized. I’ve been told so many times that I can’t do it. I don’t have the right body; I don’t have the right skills or I don’t have the ability. I looked at all of these challenges directly and I responded “Watch Me”.

Meagan wrote a first person article for VICE Sports:
I Did Whatever It Took to Become an Olympian

My mom recorded my first words in my baby book. They were: mom, dad, I want it, and skate.
So basically BabyMeagan was already the Meagan we know!

Even though I wasn’t allowed to have private lessons yet, I was studying the sport from the time I was six. I was watching it on TV, on VHS tapes, and reading books. I started to teach myself jumps and sit spins. I was about 9 or 10 years old when I started working on axels. That’s when my mom finally said I could have a coach.
I mean... :COP: :respec: :kickass:

Not surprisingly, Meagan's to-do list in retirement is ambitious! http://www.lutzofgreens.com/retirement/
So, what is it? New visions and new dreams. I already have a to-do list with things that I wanted to start checking off. I want to start a wellness program for young figure skaters. To teach them proper nutrition and proper training habits, so they can thrive and enjoy a long and healthy journey through figure skating. I want to go to India and study yoga, and eventually open up my own yoga studio. I want to have a family, my own kids and adopt kids. I want to save more animals and create an animal sanctuary. I want to coach and share my passion for skating. I want to work as a technical specialist and in the future work with the ISU. I want to run marathons and I want to compete at the Adult World Championships one day. And I want to enjoy pushing myself and challenging myself through show skating. I think this to-do list will last me quite some time! And I look forward to working towards each project with the same dedication, determination and discipline as I did as a competitive figure skater.

Just realized their retirement press release (April 25), with 2-minute tribute video embedded, has not yet been posted in this thread: https://skatecanada.ca/2018/04/pair...eric-radford-retire-from-competitive-skating/
Duhamel is working on her lifestyle brand Lutz of Greens and has been involved with the Humane Society in the rescuing of dogs. She is finishing her studies in nutrition with a specialized certification in Sports and Fitness Nutrition and Vegetarian Nutrition and plans to develop a wellness program for figure skaters. Duhamel also plans to take the training to become a technical specialist.
Radford’s future plans include pursuing music and eventually composing for film, as well as coaching and choreography in skating. He is also planning his wedding to Spanish ice dancer Luis Fenero.

Pretty cool when you have a street named after you!

Meghan has said she plans to take the training to become a technical specialist. She would be a great technical specialist, since she has been able to calculate her own performance accurately before she even gets off the ice!

They are such nice people, I had a really good time :) They are well spoken and very open and candid. I particularly enjoyed their assessment of the past and future pairs field.
They also wanted to make sure to answer all the fan questions even if the interview went long :cheer2:
The interview took place at the dog cafe so Meagan could take her dogs :dog:

That is great to hear. I hope Meagan is also accepting of him being gay too.

Won't they still skate together as pros?
That are still skating together as pros. They have a 2 month 30 stop tour coming up in Canada at least, plus they're doing seminars and other activities together. Meagan's known that Eric's gay for years before he came out to the general public. I find you wondering if she's accepting of it

It's a judgejudy pseud trolling for reactions. When it's not busy created endless polls on historic results it resorts to stuff like that to get a rise.
