Unlabeled meat found in 20% of sausages

Why does it matter?

I can see this being a problem for people with allergies and dietary restrictions, but for everyone else?

I suppose it could be a problem if you are thinking that you are buying pork sausages, but there is horse meat in them instead, or any meat that was not originally meant for consumption and therefore the animals may have been treated with drugs that animals intended for consumption would not be.

But horse meat is often consumed.

It is not horse meat as such, but horse meat that wasn't meant for consumption. If you are keeping animals that are going to be sold to food market, you have to comply with some regulations about how you keep the animals, what medications they can receive etc. Some horses are kept for other reasons than food market, so their owners would not necessarily worry about the medications the horse receives and if it then get into the food market, it is not good for people. At least this is what was said when there was the wrong meat labels scandal in the UK a few year ago.

There is also religious reasons. If someone who is Hindu buys pork sausages, the last thing he/she would want is beef mixed in. Plus I always try to read the labels of the food I buy so it freaks me out that something like sausages may contain ingredients not listed.

We buy sausages local only from a meat market. Obviously, the same problem could still occur, but they do not use nitrites for preservatives which is worth the extra money.

Sausages are often seen as a guilty pleasure, like when people go out for greasy spoon breakfasts. In that case the assumption is pretty much that sausages aren't healthy to begin with, and I don't think people really care about the specific breakdown as to what meat is in them.

Of course it's a different thing if you eat them regularly or give them to your kids - in which case a local butcher would be preferable to the ubiquitous breakfast sausage. And local, hand-made sausages are yummy.

Maybe those concerned should organize a boycott. I already thought of a slogan: Just Say Nay!

As was pointed out before, there are those who don't eat certain meats for religious reasons. My mom can't eat pork because she is allergic. Sausages may not be healthy but that doesn't mean that people don't want to know what's in them or that they don't have a right to know what it is in them/should not be given the possibility to check.

Exactly. Plus, if we can't trust to what is written about the content, what else may have been added into the sausages? What about any non meat stuff to increase the amount of sausages and increase the profit?
