Most of that speculation came after an interview with Rafael saying that Nathan's family could be overbearing and that he didn't necessarily agree with all of Nathan's decisions on certain things at the Olympics. Aha I forgot about the massive interview that Raf had with the Russian journalist. Actually, I've known about this issue for several years, and it is very real.

Guaranteed GP spots for next season based on current rules:

-two spots based on finishing in the top 12 at world championships: Chen (seeded), Aaron

-one spot based on being in the top 24 of the SB list: Chen (but he's guaranteed two), Zhou, Brown, Rippon, Aaron (guaranteed two),

-one spot based on being in the top 24 of the world standing lists: too early to say because the 2015-2016 data will be purged and the 2016-2017 data will be reduced in value. As of today (with incomplete data), these are the Americans who are in the top 24 of the current world standings: Chen (guaranteed two), Brown, Rippon, Aaron (guaranteed 2), Zhou

-other Americans in the top 75 of the Season Best list and eligible for selection: Krasnozhon (32), Miner (34), Hochstein (43), Johnson (44), Pulkinen (55), Dolensky (56), (Torgashev (58), Hiwatashi (66), Rabbitt (70)
 
One thing I don’t understand: Tom Z tweeted that Max was replacing Jason at Worlds on March 2 - three weeks ago - so why is Max saying he only found out a week and a half ago he was going? Did he have visa issues?
 
US Men in the Top 24 SB for next season:
  • 1-Chen (also 1st at Worlds)
  • 7-Zhou
  • 10-Brown
  • 11-Rippon
  • 13-Aaron (retired)
Next down the list are Krasnozhon (32), Miner (34, retired), Hochstein (43), Johnson (44).

He said he found out a week and a half before leaving for the event. He probably left for Italy a week and a half ago. That would have only left him about a week and a half for solid training before leaving, since they don’t get much ice time once at the event.
 
Watching men tonight wished I was not a skater because every failed jump I saw coming before the splat.

So proud of Max, Nathan, gutted for Vincent. The last group hurt my soul (except Nathan), felt so bad for each fall, but they all did not give up and the crowd support was phenomenal.
 
@kwanfan1818, we are assuming that Max and Ross are retiring but they yet to confirm it themselves... eta: ditto for Adam and Grant (who may be the "surest bet" of the group at this point). Max's quote to the ISU after his FS that misskarne posted on the previous page:

Congrats Nathan! So happy for him! I'll never forget watching 10 year old Nathan in the now famous Nationals exhibition and hoping that he would somehow survive those future years, fingers always crossed that he would make it. And then two years ago having that breakthrough at Nationals only to injure himself at the now infamous Nationals exhibition. When I heard he needed surgery I wondered if he'd be able to comeback, never dreaming that he would come back with new more difficult quads in less than a year. And then of course the craziness and disappointment of the Olympics...and now World Champion! The guy just continually amazes me. I hope it's just the start of wonderful things for Nathan!

Thanks to Max for a great job of keeping our spots.... what a class act he has always been!

Poor Vincent! But he has a lot to be proud of, including a small medal for the short and a strong sixth in the Olympics. His future is bright!

I don't care if Nathan went and glided into every one of his jumps - which he didn't. He DID have SOME transitions! He has said many times in interviews that he knows the PCS side suffers due to so many quad jumps and he's working on it!

He richly deserved to win this World Championships after that hot mess of a Men's Final! 'Nuff said! :p

Technically, Nathan DID medal at the Olympics. He won a Team bronze! No, he didn't medal in the individual event, but 5th at his first Olympics is very respectable, and after two nightmare SPs, it's nothing to be ashamed of! His FS as far as I'm concerned is one for the ages! The youngster soared from 17th to 5th place! I think that's got to be some kind of record in and of itself! I'm convinced he would have won the Olympics with even just a respectable top 5 or 6 skate in the SP!

To divert from Worlds for a hot second....

Andrew Torgashev appears to have moved permanently to Colorado Springs. Perhaps he will be training with Christy Krall as his principal coach, rather than his dad?

This article in the Colorado Springs Gazette concentrates on Andrew's participation in the COS "March for our Lives", which Andrew said on IG today was the "most important thing he had ever done". Scarily, Andrew was almost there, in the Parkland school, during the shooting.:eek:

"Watching from his home across the street, he [Torgashev] saw police, EMTs and SWAT rush past to the high school while a helicopter circled overhead. It "didn't feel real," he said. "I would've been involved in the shooting if I wasn't ... moving."

This is everything I wanted to say and more! Congrats to Nathan, now a World Champion Gold medallist! :respec::rockstar:He stole my heart as a little boy when he performed his "Peter and the Wolf" FS in exhibition! I knew even then this was a very special child! My heart broke for him during his tough SPs at the Olympics and I even cried for him a little! But then, my heart soared for him again when he skated his magnificent FS as his final Olympic performance! There are many more titles to come for this young man!

I'm so proud of Max and Vincent! As you say, thanks to Max he helped get the U.S. men three spots for next year! And Vincent was 3rd at his first Worlds SP! And he has a World bronze SP small medal to take home (not that the medals are small anymore!! - I remember when even the regular medals for the Champion, silver and bronze medallists were so tiny! They were dwarfed by the ribbons and looked rather silly!). Vincent has many great skates to come I am sure!

Thanks for the skating update on him! ETA: Hopefully we'll hear something more definitive about Torgashev's training situation in the near future.

Whether the poster is trolling or genuine, the point they're making is legit. The poster was referring to the short program, where it is a requirement that there be connecting steps into the solo jump. Nathan didn't have them. (Neither does Max.) Regardless of how good Nathan is or how talented he is or whatever, he should be getting pinned for that - and he's not.

Some interesting (to me anyway) side notes:

Max and Vincent went head to head four times this season (Cup of China, Internationeaux de France, Nationals, and Worlds) . On three of those four occasions Max finished higher. All three occasions Max finished higher were in front of international panels (CoC, IdF, Worlds). On the three occasions Max beat Vincent, he scored higher PCS on every segment except the Worlds SP (and he was only higher than Vincent in the Worlds FS by a point, which I'm not really okay with).

You know. I was thinking of how many (if any) young skaters were involved in the March.

But I think Torgashev moving to CO is a good idea. I hope to see him blossom.

That's a great point about PCS! I was mad that Max's PCS was lower than Vincent's at the Worlds SP. I also think the US Nationals judges lowballed Max's PCS. What do you think?!?

i honestly think he meant two additional spots, as it’s pretty much a given that one guy will be sent. I don’t think usfs has ever not qualified at least the min one entrant in each event throughout history.

A visa isn't required to enter Italy.

It's possible that Max either misspoke unintentionally or there was a typo in the transcription of his quote (it happens).

Well I still haven't seen him since I turn away often from the repeated telecasts! Max saved us a spot by being in the top 12 since Nathan won; we'll now have a full allocation of 3 skaters at Worlds next season! Unfortunately the women can't say the same; dismally low in the final results, but only because the rest of the world is so much better! Even if Mirai had been successful in her 3 Axel, it wouldn't have been enough to put her in the top 5 or 6! The men are set for the foreseeable future while the ladies aren't so secure! Never been a fan of Bradie, but you never know; she might start skating more aggressively instead of this dainty flower ready to blow away! :rolleyes: :COP: :judge: :kickass: :respec: :sarah1: :sasha1: :yikes:
 
Holy Crap.. what a disaster for so MANY people.. I was SO P*SSED at the other guy commentating (not Ryan) who, after Vincent said and now the US only gets to send 2 men next year. My First thought was "well where did Aaron end up now with the bombs of Jin and Vincent?" And low and behold I see in protocols Max actually ended up securing the 3rd spot. Me thinks commentators who do now know much about how figure skating operates should NOT be calling figure skating.
