That's right. It does depend on how well-kept it was. And if it wasn't well-kept, then it's dry rotted.

Even if well-kept, I'm afraid I still wouldn't buy a dress for 50k. With 50k, I would pay my bills, maybe buy something I personally want and give the rest to a homeless shelter.

I would want to figure out what would I do with an old skating dress worth 50k? Look at it? That's just me. I would rather help others if I had 50k.
Oh, I'm with you there! $50k would be enough for me to live on, modestly as I am now, for a couple of years instead of working. I'd pick that any day over an Olympic skating dress even if it was worn by my favorite US woman of that era.

Totally this! I mean, I know the dress is memorabilia or a collectible, but I believe she's asking way too much for it. I believe folks like you and me have sense enough to use that kind of money more wisely.

Everybody has a "throw-away money" amount that they would spend on total junk, money that they feel they could waste without it bothering them. Mine is under $20 or so. But I suppose if I was REALLY wealthy, my throw-away amount might be $50k.
Well, I got to hand you that one. If I was filthy rich, I would take some throw-away money, buy a Yacht and live in Hawaii. Maybe even buy a private island somewhere along with a small private jet. Oh, and I would also buy my dream car.

If the dress was made of the stretchy lycra/spandex that was used in that era, the elastic in the fabric is probably fraying or disintegrating. That's going to happen no matter how carefully the dress was stored, and it's going to make the dress very fragile - no one will be able to wear it or even put it on without damaging it.

I agree that the asking price is too high - the dress has some historical value to some people, but it's not like, say, a dress that Princess Diana wore, or something that widely known.

Whatever that article says, the dress’s starting bid was $3,000. Since June 9, there’s been four bids and it’s now at $3993.00 with 4 more days left to bid.

$50k would make a decent down payment on that Lambo....

I wonder why the auction house thought Tonya's dress would go for "mid five figures." Right now there is an auction for some of Princess Diana's clothing, and the estimates for the lesser-known pieces are in the low to mid 5 figures. But in my opinion Tonya at her most famous was not even close to Princess Diana at her least famous.

I'll chime in as someone who collects skating memorabilia to some extent. It's pretty common for people for overvalue anything they think is collectible. If you take a look at the wide range of prices of antique skates and old ice show programs on EBay, there are certainly many people who have expectations that are probably too high. I doubt anyone is bidding on Tonya Harding's old dress to wear it or that the bidding will be even close to what they are suggesting. I could see a private collector or a pop culture museum buying it though. Not something I would be interested in, that's for sure.

Tonya's notorious dress didn't reach the projected $50,000, but it did sell for $17,485.20 ($14,571 plus a 20% buyer's premium) in the Leland's auction that closed yesterday. Typically for auctions, the serious bidding didn't commence until the final 24 hours as the bid was below $4,000 until the final day. Clearly this is an Olympics' collectible like old baseball, basketball, and soccer (football) jerseys which a niche clientele It was NEVER intended to be worn in competition!

My Google News feed shared a Toronto Sun link posted today announcing that Tonya Harding joined X/Twitter:
She's not unrecognizable.

She's 30-35 years older.

Her sense of timing is as flawed as usual.

Yes and exactly, flawed timing as usual.

She was quite the little hottie when I talked to her at Skate America '89 in Indianapolis. Kinda charming too. That was pre-knee whacking and everything.
