The Shibutanis Thread 6: Paradise Found

Yeah, I saw hints in their post-Olympic interviews that they weren't going to do Worlds but it's still up in the air as to whether they'll continue after this season.

I'm disappointed they won't be at Worlds but I understand why. But I'm happy I will get to see them in Stars on Ice :)

:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed

But in that interview:

Are you going to Worlds [the World Figure Skating Championships start in Milan on March 19]?

Alex: We don’t know yet. There are so many opportunities right now, and we’ve always had interests that are outside of skating, so we’ll see. That doesn’t speak to what we’ll do this coming season or the next Olympics, though. We’re still very young.

You really think? Alex's comments about their youth and "we could do five more" put me at ease. They haven't said a word about any alternative AFAIK, e.g., nothing about finishing college or anything. Personally I think they are ambitious and will want to go for Olympic gold. I always remember Alex saying a long time ago, "We really believe we can be the best in the world."

yes, especially coming from Alex. I think it will be only a pause because they are so busy with no chance of train for Worlds and probably they will be doing other stuff the next days/weeks+ SOI tour. They needed this break from competition.

Maybe this would be the best time for the Shibs to retire. They just had their great Olympics and achieved their lifelong dream of making the podium (twice!) and, with P/C likely staying in, it's highly doubtful they would ever beat them. They are both intelligent people in their twenties with college educations and they have endeared themselves to America... maybe it's the perfect time to move on to the next chapter of their lives.

Obviously, they will do what they want to do. Just sayin'...

Are you insinuating that H/D and C/B are not enough intelligent to do something better with their lives? Because it is not probable that they will be winning over P/C either. Yes, maybe other teams could aspire to an Olympic medal, but Maia and Alex could aspire at least to silver.

I can understand your point, @skateboy. That is probably what they are mulling. I assume you mean PC. But on the other hand, great rivalries make skating exciting and can make both teams outdo themselves. I just don't think Maia and Alex are done exploring what they can do in ice dance. That was very clear to me in all Alex's (especially) comments about the need for ice dance to grow behind its traditional romantic model. Also, champions don't think like normal people. They see a brilliant rival and think, "I can destroy them." :angryfire

MAIA & ALEX SHIBUTANI
Hot off their Olympic Bronze medal win in PyeongChang, join the brother-sister ice dance team of Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, two-time U.S. National champions, as they take the BUILD stage to chat about their PyeongChang Olympic experience. The “ShibSibs” – a combination of their last name and the word “siblings” – are beloved throughout the skating community.

This is happening in a few minutes!!

Awe. Sniff Sniff. I was waiting for the news to hit, but I didn't want to read it just yet. I feel a little deflated knowing they won't be at worlds, because I was hoping for them to add another WC medal to their collection.

Agreeing with everyone who's said they need the break to take advantage of all their post-Oly opportunities and don't have time to do that and train. I know it's WAY too early to think about next season, but my mind always wanders ahead. How will this impact Grand Prix selection? I know their SB and WR points will allow them two invites, but what about Skate America? I'm assuming if they compete, USFS will want their two-time Olympic medalists there.

I've always liked the Shibs in the previous quad, and started rooting for them as the underdogs at the beginning of this one. I have a tendency to do that in other disciplines too. Of course, I'll always cheer for the Shibs whether it's in competition or exhibition on ice (or off!)

This certainly opens up the podium now with 2 of the three medalists missing from the roster. Definitely an opportunity for H/D, C/L, W/P, and C/B or others to move up.

Yo guys, I don’t know about you but I am really not digging the new stalker function FSU has. Why call out the lurkers like that?

OMG, I know, what is this? Who thought it was a good idea? :blocjudge
The only benefit I've seen with the changes in the forum is the ¨like¨upgrade. And it annoys me that before the changes if I was browsing on another page, notifications appeared, now if I'm on another page I can not see them, I have to return to the forum.

Okay, this BUILD interview was very interesting and they look radiant. And they are so lucky because when they skated on the Rockefeller center, the day was so sunny and pretty and today is rainy and cold in NY.

I’m also sad they won’t be at Worlds but it was pretty easy to see that decision coming. Actually I really only wanted them to go because I wanted that SD to finally break 80 :wuzrobbed

And honestly, they’ve been working nonstop since literally the day after worlds ended last year. They really deserve a vacation so I really hope they get one at some point now between pursuing other opportunities.

I don’t think they’re considering retirement. There was way too much talk about how young they still are and saying they “feel good” about 2022. I don’t think they’re done showing the ice dance world what they’re capable of yet. They believe they can push even harder and higher and they haven’t been wrong so far. :)

I'm sad not to see them at worlds but it's been a nonstop whirlwind of engagements since they finished competing and not likely to let up anytime soon, so that's great for them. And, it's wonderful for H/B to get a chance at worlds, and one more performance of their sublime FD.

I hope they take a vacations, to Italy :p. It is not possible they have never been in Italy!!.

That Build Series interview was one of their best. Alex is really coming alive in these social engagements. I loved their answer to the audience member's question about whether they ever fought right before a competition and skated angry.

I’m a little sad the Shibs aren’t going to worlds just because I wanted to see their programs again and for them to get another world medal. But watching their recent interviews I was kind of expecting it. Hopefully we will see them back next season.

I can’t wait to see them at Stars on Ice this spring!
