Well, one step the church can take today is to ban the practice of hearing an allegation and then moving the priest to another parish.
It's not clear to me what the timeline is for these events, but Pennsylvania has statute of limitations on prosecution if the victim is over the age of 50.I want to hear the words prosecution, conviction and prison.for the perps and their abettors.
should Francis survive this?
I wonder about all of this as well. But I also have to question Vigano's motives, and read there are some inconsistencies in his letter. I like Francis, but if he knew and covered up this bit with McCarrick, that's bad. And the comments by Rivera are disgusting.So.....this bombshell dropped last night
Ex-nuncio Vigano’s testimony
I’m not Catholic, so I don’t know all of how their church works, but if this is true - should Francis survive this?
It also makes me wonder more about Benedict XVI’s resignation......
Not that I'm sticking up for Pope Francis, but he shouldn't be the one that takes all the heat for this.
He also recently refused to apologize for the atrocities committed by the CC at Residential Schools in Canada. With all due respect, the fish rots from the head. He has not apologised for the cover-up of crimes against children and women that was directed on a worldwide scale. This is why people are angry. He had ample opportunity to apologise for the church’s behaviour during his visit to Ireland last weekend. He failed to do so.
Among the things he did say:
- he said he had never heard about the Magdalene laundries here despite the fact he met Magdalene laundry survivor Philomena Lee in 2014.
- he described one survivor of abuse who was part of a Vatican commission as “fixated”
- he told journalists that parents whose children come out as gay should take them to psychiatrists. This has since been removed from the press conference transcript.
DO NOT BE FOOLED. HE IS AS BAD AS THE REST OF THEM.
In all, 55% of those polled said they didn’t think the pope had gone far enough on the issue of child sex abuse, 31% said he had, and 14% said they had no opinion.
When asked if the papal visit had changed their opinion of the church, 5% said it had a lot, 15% said it somewhat had, and 80% said it hadn’t at all.
Of those polled, 67% described themselves as Catholic. On the question of if priests should be allowed to marry, 90% said they should, 86% said women should be allowed to be priests and 92% said contraception should be available in all circumstances.
Further questions asked if abortion should be allowed in a wide range of circumstances (53% agreed, and 41% disgareed) and if gay and lesbian marriages should be recognised by the church (77% agreed they should, and 16% disagreed).
That’s all very disappointing. That last point, though, is surprising given some of his previous statements. Could there have been an error in the original transcript? Sigh..Among the things he did say:
- he said he had never heard about the Magdalene laundries here despite the fact he met Magdalene laundry survivor Philomena Lee in 2014.
- he described one survivor of abuse who was part of a Vatican commission as “fixated”
- he told journalists that parents whose children come out as gay should take them to psychiatrists. This has since been removed from the press conference transcript.
Not that I'm sticking up for Pope Francis, but he shouldn't be the one that takes all the heat for this. All of them should, every last cardinal, bishop etc. And Vigano's testimony? Shut up.
The Catholic Church does not get how angry even ordinary catholics in Ireland are and they are completely out of touch.
