Sener found the death ray to be one of the more intriguing devices — sometimes referred to as the heat ray. Historical writings suggested that Archimedes used “burning mirrors” to start anchored ships on fire during the siege of Syracuse from 214 to 212 BC.

“Archimedes was so ahead of his time with his inventions. And it really did revolutionize technology at that time, because Archimedes was thinking about stuff that no one actually had before,” Sener said. “(The death ray) is such a neat idea that no one at that time would have thought of.”

Well, there's good news for anyone that has Windows 10 22H2 and can't upgrade to Windows 11. There are things that's preventing me to upgrade. My CPU and I have a Legacy Bios. There are instructions on how to change the Legacy Bios where I could then have a trusted platform module (TPM). The other problem is the CPU. I have 6 GB memory with 3rd generation core i5 with 2.5 GHz plus Intel Turbo Boost which enhances the CPU up to 3.10. All of this qualifies except for the CPU.

In other words, Microsoft decided to do this where us Windows !0 users would have to purchase a new laptop with Windows 11 by October 14th, 2025. Microsoft had also announced at the beginning of 2023 that they wouldn't offer Extended Security Updates (ESU's) after October 14th, 2025. They had also announced that they wouldn't offer any ESU plans for a price.

Apparently, Microsoft started realizing that a lot of consumers including businesses couldn't afford to just go out and buy new PC's and laptops. I was also reading at Microsoft Community message board how several other people were complaining that they couldn't just go out and buy a new laptop or PC. Others had even expressed how they would change their operating systems (OS) to Linux Ubuntu which is free. I was even considering it.

On December 5th, 2023, Microsoft announced on the Windows IT Pro Blog that there would be end of support plans for extended security updates. The plan will be renewable for 3 years which will allow businesses and consumers to continue to have Windows 10 22H2 until 2028. Microsoft hasn't announced how much the plan will cost yet. However, I can certainly afford it compared to buying a new laptop.

Got another email from NASA. If anyone is interested, NASA is accepting applications for Astronauts. However, you have to meet their qualifications. Good luck to anyone that can meet their qualifications! :lol:

Astronaut requirements have changed with NASA’s goals and missions. Today, to be considered for an astronaut position, applicants must meet the following qualifications:


  1. Be a U.S. citizen
  2. Have a master’s degree* in a STEM field, including engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics, from an accredited institution.
  3. Have a minimum of three years of related professional experience obtained after degree completion (or 1,000 Pilot-in-Command hours with at least 850 of those hours in high performance jet aircraft for pilots) For medical doctors, time in residency can count towards experience and must be completed by June 2025.
  4. Be able to successfully complete the NASA long-duration flight astronaut physical.

*The master’s degree requirement can also be met by:

  • Two years of work towards a doctoral program in a related science, technology, engineering, or math field.
  • Completed Doctor of Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, or related medical degree
  • Completion (or current enrollment that will result in completion by June 2025) of a nationally recognized test pilot school program.

Astronaut candidates must also have skills in leadership, teamwork and communications.

Artemis Generation astronauts will explore and conduct experiments where humans have never been: the lunar South Pole.

NASA’s Astronaut Selection Board reviews the applications and assesses each candidate’s qualifications. The board then invites a small group of the most highly qualified candidates for interviews at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Of those interviewed, about half are invited back for second interviews. From that group, NASA’s new astronaut candidates are selected. They report for training at Johnson and spend the next two years learning basic astronaut skills like spacewalking, operating the space station, flying T-38 jet planes and controlling a robotic arm.

With NASA’s plans for the future of exploration, new astronauts will fly farther into space than ever before on lunar missions and may be the first humans to fly on to Mars.

I wanted to be an astronaut when I was in graduate school, working on my PhD. I even visited NASA in Houston and got a tour of the facility with a woman astronaut. Somehow it didn't happen. I didn't even apply. I ended up just an engineer. :(

ETA- I just realized I am completely OT. This is a good news thread. So here is something positive.

It was nice to see on tv so many young and old people excited about the solar eclipse. My thought was - this could motivate many people to pursue science in hopes of becoming astronauts.

In my next life I would like to be an astrophysisist and study the universe.
