ISU Communication 2704 - Ice Dance Requirements for Technical Rules Season 2025/26

ETA -

Hmmmm... Theoretically, country music, especially the country pop stuff from the likes of Shania Twain & Faith Hill, is definitely not off the table. I pray we get something along those lines from some team trying to distinguish themselves a bit.
So it says one of the styles can be "Pop/Street Latin" but competitive ballroom style isn't allowed. I don't follow ballroom, so maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't tons of ballroom competitors have used something like Ricky Martin's "Living the Vida Loca" as you might see on the one of the dance reality shows? How would the judges decide something was "pop" latin and not "competitive" latin?

The AI thing is offensive to just about anyone who remotely works in arts and culture, but I'd bet that for the ISU, AI music has the special bonus of fewer copyright issues. Sigh
Does it? Why would AI music have less copyright issues? Didn't someone still put in the prompt for music in that style, which the AI then generated?

Someone who knows more about the legalities around copyright and AI as well as the actual technicalities of AI music generation itself would need to chime in. But AI might be capable of generating music that sounds exactly like a Nirvana tune AND of generating lyrics that resemble grunge ones, except that there'd be no actual songwriters or music companies to get permission from. Presumably, one would just need the permission from the person who did the software work.

It's an interesting idea. I wonder if this wouldn't also cause a problem if the AI generated music is too similar to the original song. I hope the ISU will issue some more guidance on what they exactly mean with AI music.

I do suppose AI music would be a good way of getting around that last stipulation that the music "must not include aggressive and/or offending lyrics." I mean, they could just get the KidBopz versions, but AI is new & novel, lol.

There's a KidzBop version of Pink Pony Club.

I'd uber hard for any team doing a Cathy Dennis mash up. Just Another Dream. Touch Me (Hold Me). C'mon and Get My Love was released in 89. She's British.

Too late now, but I really wish that the ISU didn't have three "decades" RDs in a row. It seems so short-sighted and uncreative, not to mention it tends to also favour some teams over others, year after year. I liked the good old days when some teams shined at Latin dances and others shined at waltzes or tangos and sometimes teams had to stretch themselves way out of their comfort zones.

Most of the judges fully missed that Guignard & Fabbri were using a Glee cover and not the original at the beginning of the season, and judges have also failed to notice when a FD was missing the required tempo change, so I don't know that the IDTC actually expects the judges to be able to enforce the music rules.

I’m not sure quite what I was expecting by a “helicopter type movement” (maybe some kind of mini-lift?) but it definitely wasn’t a double three-turn with free leg extended.
but there's so many choices! you can do it sbs! Or facing each other! Or...in kilian I guess? If someone does it in high kilian I'll actually be impressed.

I guess this would qualify?

These turns go by several different names, including helicopters, but that doesn't seem to be what the ISU is referring to here.

Yeah this is what I'm assuming they're getting at, although they do drop the free leg below 45 degrees towards the end but I'm not sure when they are allowed to do that for this rd
