Isn't being able to skate in hold a fundamental aspect of Ice Dance?🤔
Is it? Looking at the ways the rules are written and the judging, I’m not so sure it is.

Skating in hold isn’t necessary for every dance form, so I’m glad it’s not always required, but I don’t think there is currently enough emphasis on it to make teams focus on it.

Yesss I support this 100%. Quick who's the stiffest female ice dancer currently?

Please no one answer that I don't want an actual fight to break out.
They would somehow need to combine the mannequin theme with being over the top emotive as well, as is necessary for an 80s power ballad duet.

In the same vein, I want a team to do an over the top emotive dance to "Total Eclipse of the Heart", as that song really requires. In my mind, that one would also require aspects of interpretive dance to be incorporated.

It's not 80's music but I would really like to see a team use any music by The Dead South. They are a folk-bluegrass band from Canada and use a mix of mandolin, banjo, guitar and cello. I'm not a huge bluegrass fan but there is something about this group I love.

Some of the songs I like:
In Hell I'll be in Good Company (love how he's using the cello as a guitar)
You Are My Sunshine (love this arrangement)
People are Strange
Delirium (all their videos are weird, this one is just a fully clothed man in a bathtub with headphones on )
Honey You

But honestly the skaters can pick anything these guys do and I would be happy.

Hi everyone!!!!!! I was redirected to this forum after I posted this to another forum:

I heard a little rumor for RDs for next year........

JUNIOR: 80s themed (very confirmed, just not sure tempo) -- maybe Rocker Foxtrot as the pattern (idk why that dance but oh well)

SENIOR: THEME = ??? -- bringing back the pattern -- Silver Samba but... NO key points, NO timing rules, NO ice pattern placement rules....... (which I find then unfair for the juniors, but that's just my personal opinion lol)

REMEMBER... all rumors that I've heard from a few coaches (one being indirectly Carol Lane from Scarboro)

EVERYONE COMMENT 80s SONGS THAT YOU WANT JUNIORS TO SKATE TO!!!!!!!!

Lol I love no key points or timing like just skate the pattern how you feel I guess

Ok also I just thought that someone needs to skate to Whip It because that's what my local rollerskating rink would play for races in the 80's and I just think it'd be funny

Whats the reasoning behind having the pattern but not calling it? Are they keeping it for the vibes only? And what are they trying to develop juniors by having them skate to patterns but not the senior field? Ice dancers still have to improve their technique in seniors too....
Someone explain

I agree, I'm not entirely sure.....

I know years ago, people used to argue that by senior level, skaters should have mastered all that patterns could teach them, but as we see now, that is not the case. Bring the patterns back so that skaters can continue to learn these concepts as seniors.

It would be so much easier to think the Ice Dance Technical Committee gets drunk when they plan the next season’s Rhythm Dance, but it’s depressing to know that the watering down of technical requirements is by design.

While I truly feel they are doing what they think people will like, what they think will grow the discipline, I also think it’s hurting the concept of Ice Dance as a sport. It also keeps reading to me as a group of middle aged and older people trying to understand teens and 20somethings, which at my age of 35 I’ve realized is a fool’s game.

I’m really excited by the potential for an 80s themed RD, but I still want the RD to be a technical program that sets the teams apart. I had a lot of fun comparing the patterns of all the teams while watching the 2022 Oly RD. To me, it’s one of the simplest and best tools to start understanding the discipline. But, then that makes me think how the technical committee is changing the concept of the discipline itself, and maybe I’m just holding on to what we’ve already lost.

So now we will have repetition and divided style programs for the purpose of no technical merit? For the technical program at the most advanced level of the sport?

We can't even blame the TV stations for this.

Um, yes.

Cross-posting from the U.S. dance thread:

Hawayek and Baker have withdrawn from Nationals!

“After much consideration, we have decided to withdraw from the 2023 Toyota U.S. Championship

Over the past 18 months, our team has dealt with significant physical injuries that have led to challenges in our mental health & we feel it is in our best interest to prioritize this currently."(2/3) #USChamps23

We are grateful to have the collective support of our whole team behind this decision and cannot thank them enough. We will use this time to come back stronger with the intention to petition for a spot on the 2023 World Team.” (3/3) #USChamps23

Asaf Kazimov has received his release from the German fed to skate for Spain and Val/Kazimov will be competing at Challenge Cup in the hopes of earning the TES mins to represent Spain at Worlds!

Yeah, it’s not the job of the technical committee to market the discipline. Skating's not going to get back to where it was 25 years ago, but if the dance committee would just focus on developing the sport and pushing all ice dancers to develop their skills and left the ISU to hire someone who actually knows about social media marketing to promote it to their target audiences it would go a long way. I'm a middle-aged person who's followed ice dance for decades so I've no idea how to bring in more fans, but this definitely isn't it - and it's clear that some of the younger skaters are better at selling the sport than the ISU marketing dept.

I would much rather have a single set rhythm than a set theme for the RD, but if we have to have a theme at least 80s should bring some fun (and hopefully some good music). And if anyone skates to Kirsty MacColl they will be my new favourite team.

Who thinks that this means that Olivia Smart will shortly receive her release from Spain, so she can represent Germany?

I assume Spain will do whatever it takes to maintain the delicate equilibrium of always having the wrong number of qualified senior dance teams in relation to however many spots they have at Worlds.

But in reality - I agree, Smart going to Germany seems pretty likely based on this news.
