The Carolina Kostner Thread

So happy she did such a beautiful short program one more time after Olys. Congrats to the PCS World record, she deserves it indeed! Since she's one of my all time favs, I'll miss her so much. :wuzrobbed Show us one more ethereal program!

I just found she's added to the cast of SOI tour in Japan and Super Stars on Ice. Good for her!

I will likely be inconsolable when Caro steps away from competitive ice. I will truly miss watching the most beautiful angel on the ice. Kostner has my <3 as a skating fan forever. She embodies everything I adore and appreciate about this sport and art. She's the goddess of skating! :saint:

I think i'm going to be seriously depressed after Worlds. Skating will not be the same without Carolina, Mao and Akiko. They are the only skaters who are a joy to watch

She IS the skating goddess of our time, musesk8r. These last few years, when she flowered after I for one thought she should quit (after 2009 Worlds - I couldnt imagine her recovering from that humiliation), have just been one gift after another. The immense smile on her face since the beginning of her SP in Sochi to now makes her seem to inhabit a celestial realm all her own. Like Yu Na, Carolina has carried the hopes of a country on her shoulders for years, and sometimes the weight of that hope was obvious (Torino). For all her talent, it took her a long time to climb that mountain and she fell many times on her way to the peak. She stuck with one coach and one choreographer for the vast majority of her career. "Slow and steady..." comes to mind. She is an example to young skaters in so many ways -- character, perseverance, artistic achievement, distinctive musical choices, speed, jumps as straight as a tree (Julia Lipnitskaya told an interviewer that Carolina was her favorite skater because of those jumps). She has been a muse for Lori Nichols - their collaboration is worthy of serious study IMO.

It took me a long time to recognize Carolina's worth, but by golly I see it now. Goddess indeed.

Her skating is without parallel. She has defined ladies figure skating for me this season and there won't be another artist like her in this sport for another 20 or 30 years, such a pure skater from every single angle. Her mental transformation and new-found ability to approach pressure with a smile on her face is very inspiring. The quality of her skating is at an unspeakable level, it can't be defined in words IMO. The highest quality and most beautiful skating that I have ever seen.

ITA. Waiting to see what Lori and Carolina come up with has been a source of joy for me in the past few seasons. To make an analogy…Michelle Kwan and Carolina Kostner were to Lori Nichol what Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow were to Woody Allen in terms of being muses.

So Michelle Kwan = Mia Farrow and Carolina = Diane Keaton?

And Lori Nichol = Woody Allen?

:shuffle:

:D

Nothing to do with their outside relationships, haha.

I was thinking Michelle Kwan = Diane Keaton because she was the first skater to make it big with Lori's work, and was part of Lori's first strings of successes. Then Kwan stopped collaborating with Nichol and then left competitive skating. Nichol worked with a few other people for a while and then found Carolina and found a second wave of huge successes. Although Nichol did do some wonderful programs for other skaters (like some of Suguri's routines, Mao, Daisuke, etc.).

If I could rep this I would, perfectly said! :respec:
I've seen Carolina growing, fighting against her demons on and off the ice...she is amazing, I feel very honoured and so very proud for what she achieved! I'll too miss her badly in competitive skating but I'll be fine with whatever decision she takes in near future as I know she greedy to live a more normal life herself :)
While mr. Huth has to be given a huge credit for all this I do feel the relationship with Nichol was key... they have such an amazing feeling with one another you wouldn't believe it; she has been pushing her very much, being caring at the same time!
My fav moment yesterday was not only seeing another amazing skate from Caro but the crowd giving her a well deserved standing ovation she was totally robbed from in Sochi IMO. And well now she even has a PCS world record... at last!!! :cheer: :D

About the Japanese tour, yes Carolina is supposed to join the whole thing. She will be in Japan till late April :)

This. I gave up trying to express how perfect her skating skills are and how that allows for subtle, nuanced interpretation that makes every program memorable.

:respec: another post worth rep if I could do it! lol

I also have no words what her skating means to me. I loved her from the very beginning but the last four years have been extraordinary. Her skating touches me deepest inside. Her SP this season is the most wonderful SP I have ever seen from any skater. For me, this is what skating should always be. Perfection on ice! I also love the Bolero and I´m looking forward to see it tomorrow again! For me, she´s also the Olympic Champion. And will be the World hampion again :-)

I have to say that Kostner seems like the nicest person in the whole world. For all the bashing we fans (understandably) do of the poor officials, this sport still attracts athletes of the highest character, grace, intelligence, and kindness.

She was really nice when I met her! After the medals ceremony, she (along with Yuna) stopped to give all her fans autographs (something that can't be said of Adelina, Julia, Patrick, Yuzuru, V/T, or S/S).

Thank-you, Carolina, for another wonderful performance.

I didn't love her from the beginning. It's the last four years that won me over. I'm so glad she chose to continue after her disappointing Olympics in Vancouver.

Same here. I thought she had a lot of promise in 2003, but I disliked her coltish, unfinished skating. It was all so messy and all so much. She sort of won me over a bit in 2007 with that great SP at Worlds. Then 2008 Worlds happened and she won silver with what I think is still one of the grossest looking silver medal winning performances in the LP. I just didn't get her and begrudged her and the huge scores she got for mistake-ridden performances. Then 2009 Worlds LP happened and I felt utterly bad for her, but I still wasn't a fan. Then 2011-2014 happened, and she just became so magical. She slowed down, she finished her moves, she relaxed to the music, and she skated differently. She looked like she just focused on skating the way she thought skating should look like, and I appreciated that. Now, I love her.

Not the performance she was looking for today :(

I am still glad she did Worlds though because she gave us that amazing SP two days ago and she finally received the deserved standing O that she was robbed of in Sochi!

^She may follow the Mao route - take this season off. But being older than Mao by an entire Olympic season almost (3.5 yrs.) and probably having accomplished all her realistic competitive goals (World and European Champ w/ multiple medals; Olympic medalist), my bet is that she retires. But not 100% sure.

The second guest is introduced by a beautiful collage of pirouettes on the ice: to answer questions by Fabio Fazio Carolina Kostner is in fact, the first Italian skater to win a medal at the Olympics and a gold at the World Championships and the European Championships. Carolina, Bolzano daughter of a hockey player and a figure skater, began to go on the ice for only four years, thanks to a dress given to her by her father, and he trains in Germany since 1999. Early successes date back to 2002, but they are also came disappointments and injuries. The Olympic medal dreamed of for years has arrived in the Games in Sochi in 2014, by which time the athlete did not believe anymore. At that moment, the silence of the audience during the performance and the roar of the final made it clear that he had done the race of life. Carolina is an athlete sensitive and self-critical, which feels much the weight of the race and who has had difficult moments in their career because of his emotions. After the disastrous Olympics in Vancouver, she was undecided whether to continue to skate, and found the strength to go on when they began to be herself and demand respect. The last questions are about the costumes and the music, which Kostner has the last word, and on their training three hours on the ice more work in the gym and in the rehearsal room. Carolina Kostner will perform on September 20 and 21 at the Arena of Verona, on the occasion of "Intimissimi on ice."
