The Amazing Race - S37

Hypothetical: Let's say due to taking taxi all trip (and if they figured out the cypher quickly), they ended up in 1st. Would they have to sit out a penalty (those are 4 hours, right?), or go back to the starting point, and then proceed via bus/walking to each destination back to the pit stop?
In the past, there's been a time penalty. I think two hours, maybe? Something like that.

I was curious if they would assess a penalty for each instance of taking a taxi, or just one for the leg. In the end it didn’t matter, but I wish they had told us!

That I remember, penalties for breaking rules have varied a lot. The only set penalties are for skipping a roadblock (4 hours) and skipping a detour (I think it's 6 hours now, used to be 24 hours way way back). For taking a taxi instead of walking or taking another mode of transportation, the most common one I remember is 30 minutes but that was only when the mistake happened in one portion of the leg, in this case it was the majority of the leg. I think the worst penalties are the ones where a team forgets something and they have to go back to retrieve it, because sometimes they don't know where they could've possibly left said required item. And I don't just mean a passport but non-essential things like clues or the now defunct Travelocity roaming gnome. And my favorite, when a team actually found the finish line before they found the final roadblock many seasons ago. They ended up winning anyway, but I think it was the first and only time Phil had to send a team back to complete a task in the final leg.

The "no taxi" rule was mentioned so much this leg that I was convinced Melinda and Erika wouldn't arrive last and they'd either get eliminated because of a time violation or they would've just escaped elimination. It would've been the first time in a while we hear Phil say his dreaded "you're the X team to arrive, HOWEVER". Well, in the end it made no difference except M&E got to be better rested in their final leg before elimination. So far, no one's quite getting THE winner's edit in my book. But I'll make a prediction now, Alyssa and Josiah are getting the loser's edit, meaning that they're very unlikely to win if they make the final 3. They have the express pass, so that'll help, but normally they have a deadline to use that express pass and can't be used during the final leg.

I actually liked Jonathan for most of this episode, but his "We are finally in our rightful place" bit at the bathmat was just . But I don't think I've ever seen anyone enjoy putting machine heads on an instrument quite so much.

I laughed when I saw the pizza challenge. Ana isn't the only one who's made pizza. I knew that dough would be everyone's downfall.

saw a video online of Phil with musicians in Naples eating delivered pizza. lol

When it was announced it was nonelimination - I was stunned - but it was last season that there no nonelimination rounds I am remembering, not this season.

Other than Jonathan - I am liking all the others. The sibs are growing on me. they would be good to bring back again - as they mature and would be great to see.

I did not expect an NEL. It's been a while. I had to go back and re-listen to Phil announcing the pit stop to see if he said "the last team will be eliminated" or "may be eliminated" but turns out he said neither. Smart. I think if he'd said "the last team may be eliminated" I would've immediately assumed it was an NEL because he's been saying "will be eliminated" for several seasons now. I suppose this is another one of the surprise turns they promised at the beginning of the season.
I like the siblings. I'm not sure I see them winning the whole thing just because there's always at least one memory task or something requiring a whole lot of patience in the final, but they both excel at the physical challenges. So, if there are a lot of physical tasks in the next few legs, I can see them making the top 3.

And then there were 4. It seems like the detours were far enough from one another that teams really had no clue what their placements were this leg. Josiah and Alyssa seemed shocked to be second. Surely knew they weren't last since the boys were following them before they got lost, but I think they thought they'd be 4th. I still think they're getting the "losers edit", meaning that if they make the final 3 they most likely won't win, but I wonder even if they'll make the finale. They no longer have the express pass and their downfall has been poor decision making. Personally, once I saw all those teams stuck at the cheese challenge I would've immediately handed over my express pass unless I was some kind of cheese whiz, which I'm not and clearly neither are they.
Jonathan was back to being Jonathan this leg. I seriously don't know how Ana puts up with him. It's all your fault, you're making us lose time, you messed up, you did this wrong, you're losing this for us, you, you, you, bad, bad, bad. Unfortunately, they're (well, he's) getting the "totally insufferable" edit, which means they'll make it far and since I consider them overall stronger than two of the other teams I think they'll make the final 3.
The gamers are back on top. They needed an equalizer to catch up and the flight+train was it for them. They're pretty well rounded and if they're good at memory challenges they have a chance to win.
The siblings nailed the physical roadblock, which was no surprise, that's their strength. I can definitely see them in the finale if there's at least one very physically demanding challenge next leg. But they're not the best under pressure so I'm not sure I see them winning the whole thing. I wouldn't mind it though. Now, interestingly enough, at the roadblock Han said "I'll do it because the next one (roadblock) might be a memory one" or maybe she said mental. I wonder if this is subtle foreshadowing or just random things that made the final cut. Either way, I like them and I hope they survive next leg. I think it'll be between them and Alyssa/Josiah for the third spot in the finale.
I liked the Vegas boys. They were good. They didn't really excel but they didn't struggle that much either, so they were easy to watch. I'll miss them but I'm glad they made it this far.

As soon as I showed up at that cheese challenge, I woulda immediately turned over that Express Pass. I could have never remembered all of those names. And it all looked like cheese to me.

Stairs. Why's it always gotta be stairs. :yikes:

Jonathan (aka "My Wife Did It Wrong") had better not win this thing. If I was her, I would have immediately pulled the car over right on the highway, just stopped right there and got out of the car. So she was driving AND trying to read the directions while he just sat there and told her how she was doing it wrong. Fine! Then YOU do it a-hole! I woulda got in the back seat, threw the directions in his face and not said another word. Let HIM drive and read the directions at the same time!

I love cheese and know some of those already, so I would have been all over that one. I did feel REALLY sorry for poor Holden. He had to eat so much cheese!

Jonathan is a total asshole. That said, Ana is clearly used to him and when you are with someone a long time, you kind of tend to tune them out when they are in stress mode. Now me, I do not do stress mode well myself, so I would have been snarking right back at him. But once we were done, all would have been forgotten by both of us immediately because that's what you do.

I'm worried they're trying to fake us out with Jonathan and Ana's issue at the end of last night's episode. If they end up in the final three I don't think I'll even watch. He is just disgusting, and the fact that he wants to blame being on the spectrum for his behavior is even more disgusting.

Josiah winning my TV Boyfriend of the Year award by a mile!

The finale is tonight so I guess we won't have to wait long, but damn did they really need that cliffhanger? The editing can be tricky at times. The broken tile could easily not be a problem or even if it was, they could very well be ahead enough to make up time. I hope it's Alyssa and Josiah in the finale but history has shown that the most annoying team usually makes it way further than we'd like them to. I guess we have to wait and find out first who takes the third spot and then who wins it all.

I'm so glad I just watched last night's recorded episode and found out that there was one tonight - my PVR didn't know about it as it was on a different CTV station. I have now set it to record. I presume that is how I missed last week's episode.

I just found out who won. 😅 I decided to watch Top Chef instead. Please let me know if it’s worth watching the recording.

the finale was a bit anticlimatic
Ana is a good racer and seems like a sweet person, she deserves better.
I am very happy for 2 of the teams + Ana.

Was I hearing things - when they got on the fast boats in Miami - did I hear some Miami Vice tv show music??

I guess the final was a bit anticlimactic but I liked the winners. They were the only ones of the finalists who I don't recall being snippy with each other. Jonathan was surprisingly (to me) supportive of Ana and her long quest to do the water-walking challenge. But so glad to see him not win!

Finally caught upon the last 2 episodes and stayed unspoiled so yeah for me!
:cheer2:for the winners! I woulda been okay with an either 1 or 2 winning. That sail boat thing, like how do you ever figure that one out with no instructions on how to sail it? I guess its a good thing they figured out just paddle with your arms but wow, that must have been hard. That was a long way around that island.

It did seem rather anti-climatic but still happy for the ending. That soar thing looks so fun but my fat azz could never get that done. At least this memory challenge I might have been able to figure it out by putting the puzzle pieces together then placing the banner tags that had the order things happened.

But the car accidents, okay the 1st one seemed just like a bumper brush and didn't see any damage, but that second one ... the random driver dude just let them drive away? There was visible damage on that red car. Does the show handle things like car accidents when something like that happens? Cause if one of those racers hit me and its their fault and y'all damaged my car, you are payin' for the damage, race be damned how long I hold you up getting your insurance info. Maybe that's just me. :P

I wish they would tell you time check-in's at the Final Mat so we could see just how far everyone was behind each other. We need a good run down to the Final Mat like that one season early one where a Team I didn't like literally got passed running up to the final check in. I loved that one since I didn't like whoever it was that I can't remember now. We need more dramatic finishes like that.

I used to watch this show pretty much immediately as the episodes would come up until 2018 or so. The "jerk" boyfriend/girlfriend/couple is pretty much a typecast for this show. But what I didn't expect to find out while reading TV Tropes for this season, is that apparently Jonathan seems to have realized his behaviour was awful during the show - and then he and his wife consulted a doctor, and he got diagnosed with Autism. So that's a rather late diagnosis indeed.

It wasn't, but it was a pretty good fake.

If Jonathan were terrible all the time, Ana likely wouldn't be with him.

Yes, this was discussed up thread somewhere.

Happy with the winners, happy with the runners up, happy for Ana for getting through that water challenge.
True, the finale was a bit anticlimactic but many finale episodes are, so nothing new. I'm glad this didn't come down to who had the best taxi driver with access to the toll lanes, etc.
Holden wins the best random quote of the race when he told the Spanish speaking driver of the car they hit "we in a race for a million dolores". He previously gave us "that's my girl, and by that I mean my sister". I liked them, I wouldn't mind if they do a future all star season. I wouldn't mind Jack and Carson back either but I'm generally not a fan of winners coming back. I definitely don't want Jonathan back unless he goes to whatever shaman Colin went to that turned him from a hot headed man child to Mr. Zen (and no, I'm not saying Jonathan is anywhere near as good a racer as Colin was, in either season).

Colin was also only 24 in his original series, this Jonathan is in his 40s.

Also, the original awful Jonathan was from season 6.

Are the recent series anywhere as good as the ones before? I did watch Colin's return season in full, but by 2018, I started thinking that nothing was as good as seasons 3 or 5.
