I think you have an overly rosy view of the situation in the United States. Consider the writings of Camille Paglia and the accusations against Roman Polanski and Woody Allen. Consider the cases of Jerry Sandusky and Larry Nassar, members of another kind of secular elite. Or read the Mexican bordello scene in On the Road.Oh believe me I know. Our tolerated pedophiles are in savagely religious communities, from the Amish to some evangelical sects to ultra-observant Jews and Muslims. It’s a different breed than claiming the right of the elite to do what they want sexually, but either way the victims are victims.
That said, I also think that your suggestion that the French view of Americans as overly puritanical should be considered in a new light was right on point.
