I was hoping if Demi didn't win that Fernanda Torres would, but congratulations to Mikey Madison!

Is there a When Harry Met Sally revival coming outside of the mayo commercial?

I couldn’t even watch the clips from Substance. Nominating a movie most people wouldn’t watch for a thousand dollars is weird. Other movies might bore me or be not my thing but something that horrific, no.

One critic said the last half hour should be watched through a tarp.

There are tons of people who really liked the substance. Horror is a legit genre and this movie made it's point very clearly. There have been many good horror movies come out lately but the academy refuses to acknowledge it. Demi won lots of other awards for this role so it's not like many people didn't see how well she did.

I wonder what Mikey Madison's reaction would be if someone told her on March 2, 2024 than one year later she would win an Oscar. If I was her I'm not sure I could get my mind around it.

Having Fernanda snubbed snubbed by the youngest, weaker actress of the bunch, is just :mitchell:
True in 99, true in 2025.
And wearing a pink dress too.

Jokes aside, so much for celebrating mature actresses. Just hand it over to the hot, young one playing a hipersexualized role, because, in the end, that’s still what really matters in Hollywood.

Meh.
If not Fernanda Torres (pardon my bias), it should have been Demi Moore.

Nope, nope, nope.

And this is why I wasn’t interested in this year’s movies and this year’s Oscar ceremony. Plus, it seems like almost all the categories come from a handful of movies. There’s no Maria, no babygirl, no last showgirl, a lot of the nominations are all pulling from the same five or six movies and that’s it.

Its like they picked six or seven movies, and they say let’s fill all categories from these 6/7 movies.

Yeah, that happens a lot, though, not just this year.

On the same note you couldn't pay me enough to watch dune 2 but I still acknowledge that it deserves awards.

To be included in the in memoriam, it doesn’t go by calendar year, it goes up until the day before the ceremony broadcasts

Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty, Tony Todd Among Those Omitted From Oscars In Memoriam Segment

Yeah, that happens a lot, though, not just this year.

I mean, Saroise Ronan had two stellar, fantastic movies to be included for best actress, there was June Squibb. There was so many things to pull from …. It doesn’t need every single actor from Emilia Perez. Lol.

They could’ve picked Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore. Not 10 nominations from wicked, 15 from Emilia Perez, four from brutalist four from a complete unknown. For me it was just disappointing. OK my rant is done. Lol

I saw The Substance in a theater, and after it ended, I thought there might be some rude comments from the guys in the theater who were expecting a more traditional, less arthouse horror movie. Instead there was absolute silence until one guy near me just whispered, “Jesus.” So for me, it was a great example of a movie that made exactly the point it was trying to make. Definitely not for everyone, but so good for what it was.

I’m not mad about Mikey Madison winning because she was great in Anora, but I’m in the “if anyone got robbed, it was Fernanda Torres” camp, personally.

I agree with the hyper sexual male gaze thing with Anora. I found it distasteful and sm so done with glorifying sex work when so many women in it are victims. It was a movie about trashy people. Who happened to be Russian which (I admit I’m prejudiced) made it worse. The ending was pure male fantasy.

That said, it was an unusual movie, with interesting cinematic choices and good performances. Worth seeing, just not a best picture. But then I’ve thought that about most BPs in the last ten years.

The best part of the night was the speeches from the Israeli and Palestinian directors of No Other Land.

Although I expected Demi to win after 4 decades of work, it's not like I think she's the most remarkable actress. So maybe her loss is less about the Academy shunning horror (although they did nominate "The Substance" for Picture too) it is more that voters preferred the lead in the movie they also voted Best Picture?

Okay, so what movies are streaming that should have been nominated in some category, but didn't. I'd like to add some of them to my list.

I did see June Squibb in Thelma and she was very good.

And I do want to see The Last Showgirl.

Honestly I agree, I'm guessing this is a side effect of the strikes slowing things down, this was kind of an off year Oscar wise for me. I haven't been super interested in any of the major nominees outside of the animation and that is very rare.
