The 2024-25 Awards Season Thread

WHOA!!?? Fernanda Torres!!!!?? 😱

And……Angelina Jolie (Maria) and Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) are likely done this awards season.
I know now I’m trying to finalize my five for the Oscars

Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Gascon and who is the fifth….. I guess Mikey Madison

Mikey Madison and Demi Moore have split most of the critics circle awards and other smaller precursors. Up until very recently she was the front runner for Best Actress so I would be very surprised if she wasn't at least nominated.

WAIT. This is Adrien Brody’s first Golden Globe? He didn’t win for The Pianist?

Unless he wins SAG, Timothée isn’t winning the Oscar. GEESH, he’s been having one of the weirdest Oscar campaigns ever.

I think that’s likely the Oscar five.

I can’t see the Brutalist before Jan 9, its first day here. I better buy the ticket in advance.

It’s a sweep - BP, Director, Actor for The Brutalist.
I didn’t expect this, although it received rave reviews.

I loved Adrien Brody in The Pianist. I didn’t see much of him after that. Just a cameo in Midnight in Paris. May be he didn’t get really good roles after The Pianist. I read that he is 51 now. He was 29 when he won the Oscar for The Pianist. So a lot of years have passed.

How many films in the comedy/musical category
My ex husband and I, who met working at the Holocaust Museum, were very cynical about Holocaust movies winning awards. I’ll spare you our theory but blech.
I've actually always wondered about that. Does it have anything to do with happy endings when so many suffered and so few escaped a dreadful fate?

As I understand it, isn't this movie more about an immigrant with an addiction problem more than the Holocaust?

That’s mostly everyone so far. Apparently, The Brutalist is epically good.

But that’s been my biggest beef with this awards season. A lot of people want to see these movies (The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, September 5, etc.) But the production companies (A24, Paramount) loves to do limited releases with these for some reason. Which is crazy considering how low budget these films are. The Brutalist was made with only $10M, for example.

Best Picture (Drama): "The Brutalist"

Not surprised. Especially after Corbet won director.
