Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

I hope when Scott says they have a lot of new elements he doesn't mean actual technical elements. Changing up the FD step sequences so often has made it difficult for them to execute them at their best. They really don't need to change them again. Or to come up with new lifts so late in the game.

It sounds like they're going to be simplifying their programs. Considering the programs they're competing against, it's probably the right call. But I still find it sad to see the way ice dance is going.

Anyways, with so many changes I'm not expecting great performances at Nationals. That's the risk, politically. Hopefully it works out for them in the end.
Why, if you think they will simplifying their programs?

Why, if you think they will simplifying their programs?

Well, mostly I just tend to worry a lot about everything. I hope V/M don't do that...

Still, making the programs breathe more would usually mean simplifying them. And maybe that will help with executing the new elements but even so, bringing in new elements so late in the game doesn't seem like the best idea. Ultimately, they risk having the kind of skate the Shibs just had with a reworked FD. I do think there was a structural problem with the FD that should have been addressed ages ago, it's just a shame it wasn't done back in the summer or fall.

I don't think we will see new elements. New ending (choreo element), some little changes in music in second part, maybe few transitions.
I can't get why TS start re-working programs because they were second in GPF. If they love there programs just skate it with all emotions, freedom and joy. Judges will not give gold not because you have bad programs or skating, guys ;)
SS FD is boring, so I don't know, what they need to do, maybe skate Fix you at OG.

I was reading old Shibutani articles and thought you all might enjoy this bit from 2014 about training with V/M and D/W in Canton:

http://time.com/7986/meet-team-usa-maia-and-alex-shibutani/

While the siblings were first a bit awestruck by training with these teams – they stuck to a small corner of the rink at their first practice until Moir came over and told them that they had as much right to the full ice as the world and Olympic champs – Maia and Alex can now quick step, foxtrot and moon dance with the best of them, and represent the bright future of American ice dance.

I have mixed feelings after reading the article and post. On one hand, it fits their usual stance on “trusting the process”. The other is, will it actually benefit them or bring them (ie scores) down due to the changes before Olympics? Feels like they also have nothing else to lose *if* narrative is set. But even say out loud if it’s so, I’m majorly pissed because they’re in this position (yet again) and they’d give the ammunition against them to justify the lost points (when it happens). Really, I have been trying to keep my cool and optimistic after GPF. And even in this thread of late, it’s not even safe place to say any of this anymore. (Even when i think they already have it on both programs but not given deserving scores). This will be my last rant before Nationals and olympics.

I wish them the best as always ...

With any luck, i’ll probably hear the outcome /results here before getting the chance to watch their amended programs via youtube. Have fun (for those of you who have opportunity to watch them live. Lucky :))!

I feel exactly this way too but find it hard to express this on this board. Thanks.

Mikhail Kolyada (RUS): “Ideally, we all should strive to be like the ice dancers”
http://www.isu.org/figure-skating/f...rviews/11861-mikhail-kolyada?templateParam=15

Q: You are also quite flexible.

M: Yes, I am trying to maintain that. I can’t stand still and be stiff. You can see immediately if someone is stretching and working on flexibility. If he just goes out, skates and does his jumps, you can see that. Figure skating is such a smooth sport, everything should look like a knife cutting through butter. You need to strive for being like the dancers. They are flying over the ice. Ideally we all should strive to be like they are. I watch the ice dancers, how they are doing all this, so softly how they stretch their legs and arms and it is all beautiful.

...

Q: Which pairs and dance teams do you like?

M: In dance, I like Tessa (Virtue) and Scott (Moir), in pairs the Chinese pair (Wenjing Sui/Cong Han), our pair Vova (Vladimir Morozov) and Zhenia (Evgenia Tarasova) and also Fedia (Klimov) with Ksiusha (Ksenia Stolbova). I also enjoy how Lesha (Alexei) Rogonov and Kristina Astakhova present their programs. From the girls, I like Carolina Kostner.

Next time they restock their Tessa and Scott boxes, I will grab one and yell out in the grocery aisle, “This one’s for Deb!” And then I’ll stare down the other shoppers with a Tessa/Carmen-like glare.
Make sure you capture ALL of it on camera. Wouldn't that just be hilarious? I can just picture it in my head. Thanks for the offer.

Here is a Russian interview with Stepanove/Burkin. According to a translation by a Russian vm fan they said the following about Tessa and Scott:
Interviewer (woman): In figure skating now, like in football Messi and Ronaldo, top Ice Dance duets are Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and French duet Papadakis/Cizeron. Who is closer to you [mean who your favorites]? Because they are totally different.

Alexandra: Canadians

Ivan: Yes, Tessa and Scott. 100%, yes!

Interviewer (woman): So Canadians, yes? [Sasha and Ivan nod] Well fine, fine, I’ll hug you after we are on the air, I totally agree with you!

Interviewer (man): They’re cool, yeah?

Ivan: They are awesome, just awesome! In this season…Are they ever! Just …

Alexandra: … It’s just something bombastic [mean fantastic, it’s Russian buzzword]!

Interviewer (man): So how do you plan to beat them?

Ivan (laughs): We will not even try, we’ll just wait for when they retire!

Interviewer (woman): I think they will not retire, since now they came back for their third Olympics, I would not be surprised if they return in 4 years again!

Alexandra: But the coolest thing about them is that they came back [to this sport] and they are still the best of the lot. And really it can be seen.

What a nice compliment from fellow ice dancers.

According to someone who was there, Scott was vocally pissed off at G/P. There was even a 'Get the hell away Paul'.

G/P need to be far more conscious of others on the ice, especially when another teams music is playing.
Well good. Piper and Paul are always doing that crap! And VM aren’t the only team it’s almost like they use it as a strategy.

Wow.

Well G/P do have a reputation of being very aggressive/too aggressive at practices.

I never realized that with G/P nobody wants injuries.

Thanks for posting the videos!
