Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

I don’t think that the technical panel can cheat as they have the video that they review. As for W/P skating if they didn’t then they wouldn’t be part of the team and a medal so I am good with that. I thought V/M were awesome!

Oops I think I screwed up? W/P aren’t skating in the team event?

VM are skating the FD not WP which isn’t surprising. It’s a risk Canada just can’t take.

Honestly Scott says the sweetest things. It’s amazing he gets so much hate on forums when he seems like such a genuine, down to earth guy. He kind of reminds me of Jack from This is Us lol.

Scott wears his heart on his sleeve, and in the past, led him to not mince words. he has since learned to be more temperate with his comments. i prefer someone like him who does not put on cerebral airs just to come off being sophisticated and uppity compared to their peers

I feel that potential controversy was largely ignored because by the American media because the top team was American and so the media had their blinders on. This might not be the case this time if something fishy happens in the individual competition.

Unfortunately though, that would not change the results. This is why I would have preferred V/M to go head-to-head with P/C in the TE, and if both had skated clean and P/C placed ahead of V/M, and if there were an outcry, there might be enough time for it to have an effect on the judging in the IE.

I don't really understand why the ISU wouldn't promote the hell out of them. Look at the reaction they get every time they step out on the ice, wherever they are in the world- they're rockstars, and very much up there on the GOAT list. Any PR team would tell you to push your recognisable faces. Tennis doesn't go round selling like, Kevin Anderson and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Perhaps the ISU thinks promoting P/C is the better long-term investment given that this is V/M's last season whereas P/C will continue through the next quad. I'm not saying this how the ISU thinks, but it wouldn't surprise me from a business perspective.

I wonder if Tessa is using the costume from their documentary. It was a red one with cutouts in the front and I don't think she has used it yet.

This is what I suspect as well. I can live with it; as long as the silhouette is as sleek as the previous one.

Anyway, can't wait for the FD. Let's go V/M!

BTW, thanks everyone for posting all the relevant V/M links here.

Scott is quintessential small town Canada. Near and dear to MY heart. I love him :)

Totally agree. Tessa has described him with many positive adjectives. One that I would add to that list is genuine.

I wasn't a big fan of the cutouts in the documentary dress- I thought it ruined her wonderful line. The one she has now is that bit more elegant. Really the only variation I'd want to see is her magnificent blue practice dress in red.

Was that Oleg Epstein in the Team Canada box clapping for V/M after their SD?

I wouldn’t read too much into ISU’s Instagram. It’s probably run by a communications person in an office who updates here and there. Maybe they’re French. Maybe they were only posting about ice dance the week P/C were skating in a competition. Maybe their boss told them to post more about figure skating that month and they sighed and just went into their basket of P/C photos and called it a day. Lots of reasons they would post P/C.

I was thinking of V/M’s mental prep, which has been amazing. On their reality show in 2014, where they brought up rest, and Marina said, “Practice well, competition perfect.” Then watch Tessa’s disappointed face (although this may have just been clever editing). In contrast, in this year’s documentary, we see them bring up rest hesitantly with their coaches and B2Ten, and their team listens and is willing to integrate that into the plan. Just an interesting contrast.

Is that because he is still somehow involved in coaching Patrick, that he gets to sit in Team Canada's box?
I am honestly not quite sure about that. Oleg thinks a lot of Patrick and vice versa. Perhaps he is attending the odd practice with Patrick if Ravi is busy with Kaetlyn i.e. there was a men's practice happening either during or right after the team event yesterday.

Omg is this true?
FYI: The Start Order for ALL the figure skating SP events at the Olympics are based on current ISU World Standings. However, that includes the European Championships -- putting North American skaters who skipped 4cc at a major disadvantage. (e.g., Bobrova is ranked 2nd in Dance)

So this means P&C will most likely get to skate AFTER V&M for the SD next week...ugh this is so shitty wth

So bascially V&M are the freakin WORLD CHAMPS & still don't get to be skating after the French or Russian teams?

Such is life. They are well aware of all of these factors. Please, let's allow them to execute their plan. They are in good stead.

Don't they do a draw within the Group though? They are ranked 3rd from what I saw. So top 5 or 6 teams will draw for starting order in the last Group. Or are you saying it is a straight reversal of World Standings for Start Order?

Ahh got it that makes sense, they will still be in the Final group of 5 I assume so they could pick last to skate cause I am sure it's a random draw once the groups are announced..

Still it is INSANE that the World Champs are ranked 3rd in the world..how is this even possible it's so ridiculous lmao

Iirc, they get grouped according to World Standings and then draw within those groups for the SD. For the FD, they group according to SD rankings and then split those groups in half and draw within those smaller groups of 3. So, the top 6 will split into 1-2-3 and 4-5-6 and then draw from there so you might get a final group starting order of something like 564231. I think. Could be very wrong.

I remember Davis/White lucking out spectacularly with the draw in Sochi. It's just something you deal with.

ETA: Oops, looks like I was totally wrong and there's no draw for the SD.

It’s by ISU World Standings for the SD warmup group, but actual starting placement will be by draw.

The SD final group will be:
Cappellini/Lanotte
Hubbell/Donohue
Virtue/Moir
Bobrova/Soloviev
Papadakis/Cizeron

It’s because Euros and 4CC are of course included in the standings. Virtue/Moir and several other North American skaters/teams who didn’t compete at 4CC suffer a bit in the standings compared to other teams that did go or go to Euros.

I was quite surprised B/S's score didn't suffer for going straight after V/M tbh. The difference was more marked than it might've been if they'd gone earlier.

Right so V&M could still draw last to skate or after P&C..

It really doesn’t matter who skates first. They would have known this too.
