Sad news out of Israel today: a group of teenagers on a field trip in the south were caught in a flash flood and swept away. Rescuers were able to bring some of the group to safety, but nine are now confirmed dead and one girl remains missing.

There have been some unusually heavy rains for late April, and flooding all over the south had already claimed two lives yesterday - also teenagers - so people are asking how this trip was even approved. What a senseless tragedy, and so heartbreaking for the kids' families.

Much too young to die. Thoughts and prayers to the victims and their loved ones.

I've updated the thread title as the body of the tenth victim has since been found.

Most of those killed have been named, all of them high school seniors - nine girls and one boy.

Like Humboldt, when it is kids your heart breaks just that little bit more. :(

My heart goes out to their familes and friends.

My thoughts and prayers for the families and friends. Arrests alleging possible negligence:

Very tragic. I wonder how the legal system will prove organizers' negligence in this case... There has to be a proof that they received and ignored advance notices (prior to departure) on weather conditions, and history of the severity of floods as a result of such specific conditions..

The weather conditions were known, and it's an area prone to flash floods. As I wrote upthread, two people had been killed the day before. Some of the girls who died reportedly texted friends about the possibility of flooding.

Taking these kids out under such conditions was grossly irresponsible. This was a preventable tragedy.

A truck driver is still missing from a separate incident yesterday :(
